‘Twas the Night Before Kissmas
Starting on December 23, 14 stories that involve a kiss or two between two of the main characters from the television show, Miss Scarlet and the Duke, will be released on the Scarleteers website, starting at 8:00 a.m. CET (Central European Time), or 2:00 a.m EST in the US, with a new story appearing every hour thereafter until all 14 stories have been posted. These stories, known as Mistletoe Berries, have been written by seven talented fan fiction writers for the Miss Scarlet and the Duke fandom and will be exclusively appearing for a time on the Scarleteers website: https://scarleteers.WordPress.com/fan-fiction/Mistletoe-berries/. I have written two stories for the Mistletoe Berries 2021 Fan Fiction Challenge, and they’ll appear under my pen name, EsmeL: “Ho Ho Ho and Mistletoe and Kisses for Pretty Girls”, and “An Leanabh Againn”.
It is my privilege now to share with you all a poem put together by one of the Mistletoe Berries 2021 Fan Fiction Challenge writers, a fabulous writer and a lovely friend, my pal, STM4 on Archive of Our Own (AO3). Enjoy her clever introduction to these 14 stories, written for your reading pleasure over this holiday season.
So grab your cup of hot tea, coffee, cocoa, wassail or mulled wine, and have a seat by the fire while you enjoy this new take on the classic poem, “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” - or in this case, Kissmas!
‘Twas the Night Before Kissmas
(Adapted from the words of “A Visit from St. Nicholas” by Clement Clarke Moore, with apologies to the author.)
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the land,
Not a creature was stirring, except Eliza’s band.
The stockings were hung by Ivy with care,
In hopes that William soon would be there.
Friend Rupert arrived with stern Mrs. Parker,
Most punctual of all, Moses came later;
Herr Hildegard and Tilly and Honeychurch in his hat,
Frank killed Henry (and Stirling), but he’s there for a chat.
When out on the street arose such a clatter,
Eliza sprang from the room to see what was the matter;
Away from the window she flew like a flash,
Tore open the door, her manner quite rash.
Dust from the coal on the new-fallen snow,
Gave a layer of murk for our favorite show;
When what to our Scarleteer eyes did see,
But a Scotland Yard carriage and two young PC’s.
With Arthur the driver so boldly and clear,
We knew in that moment the Inspector was here.
More rapid than horses the fanfic writers they came,
The challenge to write kisses, we call them by name:
Write Berries! Now, Auntdinaner! Now, EsmeL and LadyLes424!
On, LynnyB! On, Kallyknits! On, Pureoaknut and STM4!
To find the right word! To make the right call!
Now delete away! Delete away! Delete away all!
Write Mistletoe Stories, and the pages did fly,
When they met with an obstacle, they made a good try;
The task to channel showrunner sweet Rachael New,
Maybe a mystery for Eliza and include William too —
On to the stories, Team Scarlet gave a yell,
And here they all come, we hope they’re swell;
And you’ll hear them exclaim, ere they drove out of view—
