Waking to your blaring alarm clock, you already didn't think much of the day. Other than the small excitement you possessed for it being Halloween. You laid there in bed, soaking in the warmth of the blankets and thinking over your day.
You weren't scheduled to work today, a rarity that you pleaded for from your stingy boss, Ron, and the only thing you really had planned was to visit your best friend, Tara, because she'd been bugging you about hanging out recently...for some reason. Did you have a clue why? No.
A loud crash from another room startles you out of your thoughts. Quickly, you run out of your room and into the kitchen and living room area of your apartment. All you saw was a knocked over stack of books and your cat, Jinx, hiding under your table.
"Oh baby.. Did you scare yourself?" You ask the cat, who chirps in response before rushing over to wrap herself around your legs. "Yeah, I'm here babes." She immediately starts purring the second you pick her up, rubbing her face on your arm.
After about three minutes of you holding her in the kitchen, your phone rings and ruins the soft moment. "I'm sorry baby." You say before lightly setting the cat down and answering the phone.
"Hello?" "Oh my god, finally! Why'd it take you so long to answer your phone?!" Tara says loudly through your phone, being way to loud for 7:30 in the morning. "Sorry, I was cuddling my cat. What's up?" "Soooo, when are you planning on coming over?" "Girl, I don't know. When do you want me over?" "...do ya think you could be here at around...like, 11:45-ish?" You notice the slight change in her tone, shifting to impatience. "Yeah, it's not liking I'm doing much today." "Great, see ya then! Love ya!!" And just like that, she hangs up.
"..ok. I guess that means I have to get dressed and ready soon. Ughhhh, I miss my bed already.." You walk back into your room and dig through your closet until you find a suitable outfit for the day, or, at least for the morning. You then go and do the rest of your morning routine.
You're already done with all of your morning routine with about three hours to spare.
"I should've just went back to bed.." You say while yawning, now just passively watching the tv. It was the news channel, aptly named ' News', and a woman in a hot pink pantsuit was talking about the weather...or about a random news story that people only pretended to care about. You, fittingly, didn't care enough to pay attention, focusing your attention on Jinx, who's laying half asleep next to you.
"You are 100% baby." All she does is chirp at you once more. "Yep. You are full baby. You better believe it." You move closer to her, basically laying down around her curled up form, and just stare at her with a little smile.
You wake yourself up from the nap you took. Jinx is still laying there on the couch next to you, but she must've also woke up because she's now staring at you. "Mmrp?" "Hi Jinxie babe." "Mmm."
Sitting up, you rub the sleep from your eyes and finger comb out your mildly roughed up hair from laying sideways. "Okay, so, if it takes me thirty minutes to get to Tara's, and I want to be there a teeny bit early, I'll leave at like, 11:10. Cool?" You look at your cat who just stares at you lovingly. "Cool."
You look at the tv, the news still playing. "...and remember, be careful out there! You never know who or what is out there on Halloween night, waiting to pounce... So be safe!" The woman in the horribly pink pantsuit says, almost gleefully, which causes a mild chill to go down your spine.
"That's...creepy. But effective, I guess." You check the time, 10:50, and huff loudly, realizing that you still have 20 minutes until you leave.
"Well, I guess I'll...fold some laundry. I have literally nothing else to do." You say before snatching up Jinx, cackling wildly, and wandering to your room. You plop her down on the bed before laying next to her, half of your body on it and half off. She meows at you, almost like she's trying to get you to stay on task. "I know, I know. Don't yell at me." You tell her before standing up and sorting through the nearby laundry basket.
You had finally finished putting your clothes away and checked the time once more. "I'm so good with time. Usually." You pat Jinx one last time before leaving your room, grabbing your keys and coat, and exiting your apartment, locking the door swiftly afterwards.
Once you leave your apartment building, you hop into your car and start driving to Tara's, switching on a Halloween playlist and singing along to the songs.
You're just pulling up to Tara's house. It doesn't look too big for your best friend and her ever growing roster of partners and flings. It's also in quite a secluded area, away from town and hidden by some trees. Tara was waiting on her porch for you with a small nervous smile. You leave your car, locking it and setting the keys back into your pocket, and go up to greet her.
"Hey girl! Did you want me to come see you because you got a new house? It's nice." "Oh, um, yeah! I did. Thank you." She says quite quickly, like she is in a rush. She walks over to her door and ushers you in.
"I uh, I have some stuff in the attic I want to show you. Some weird artifacts the previous owner left and I knew they'd be right up your alley!" "Oh, cool.." You mumble as she practically drags you upstairs.
You both step inside her attic, it's mainly just wooden boards with a few boxes on the floor. Tara digs something out of a box, something you can't see over her shoulder as she fiddles with whatever it is. The mysterious object let's out soft music that you can barely hear over Tara's heavy breathing. Then, there's a small clicking noise as she sets the object down.
"Um, you can look at the box over there, it has the stuff for you." She points at a small box that's halfways across the room. "Okay? What were you tinkering with?" You ask as you walk over to the box. "Oh, nothing! Nothing..." She says before taking a small step back, towards the door. You quirk an eyebrow up in confusion as her eyes widen at something behind you before leaving the room and locking the door.
"Tara?! What the hell?! Why'd you lock the door!?" You yell as you rush to the door and bang on it. After getting no response from her, you hear the sound of a chain rattling, make that several chains rattling, behind you.
