My partner is currently working on a novel, and I'm sort of their lead editor. If you don't mind, I had some questions about how you're publishing Magica Riot. Is it entirely self-published, or are you also working with... I dunno, a publishing agent or something? We don't know the first thing about how publishing actually works, but you have a website and ebooks and generally it looks way more professional than anything we've got so far, so I figured I'd ask how you're doing it?
Hi! I’m happy to answer.
The Magica Riot books are entirely self-published. I write ‘em, my best friend is my story editor, and my wife is the final copy/technical editor.
I write in Scrivener and output ebooks and print interiors using the app Vellum. The website is coded by me in basic HTML and CSS and hosted on Neocities, and for the various ebook & audiobook stores I upload to Amazon directly and the others via Draft2Digital. The print books are done using IngramSpark (which also allows them to be ordered and stocked by bookstores and libraries). Also I have an Itch.io account and sell ebooks and audiobooks there, too.
The social media stuff is all run by me, too. The artwork is done by @ambisweetiepie and the audiobooks are recorded by trans voice actress Emma Martello.
It’s all very homespun but it’s worked out for me so far! 😊

Magica Riot N64 Fan Demo Update! - Claire's friends have arrived to the void!
Everyone with official art has now been added to the game!
Still need to go through and fix some stuff with the Z fighting but I can do that later when I'm redoing the faces.
it also seems like I can push the TMEM much further than I thought.
There's now way more textures than should be possible to fit in TMEM from my math working in the scene as almost every character has their own 32x32 face texture.
This means I might be able to push the character and environment textures more so things will look nicer!!
The characters also haven't been scaled to their respective heights yet, this is something I'm going to do later as it'll take some time to get the numbers right and the models might need to be slightly changed for some of them to fit the increased scale.
I'm glad to have them all in the game now!
I did some work experimenting and making sure I had a proper workflow for environment textures and stuff today too so I know how I want to build things out now.

I really like these textures because it's now easier to see Claire moving and it could help later with checking distances and stuff once I have the materials set up.
They might even make it into the final training room tbh for the platforming challenges and something else I have planned.
The platform now also no longer blinds me in my dark bedroom lol.
There's gonna be no update until Wednesday next week because I'm going on a small holiday over the weekend and won't be home until Tuesday and I will be resting due to all the traveling.
So next week I'll be focusing on the environments and likely updating the engine to the latest git version.

Magica Riot N64 Fan Demo Update! - Claire has even more friends now!!
Got 6 characters modeled and mostly textured today.
Iris, Menagerie Bloom, Hazel, Mommy Makula, Hikari an Robot Bloom!
Everyone but Makula still needs some facial textures to be updated too.
All the characters are gonna get a second pass later when I have a better idea of how far I can push the RAM an TMEM on the N64. So I can start adding details like pockets and belts and stuff then hopefully.
I was able to make them all pretty fast by using Claire's model, textures and materials as a base an then editing them and making new textures for some and editing the UVs an stuff so clothes and things were the correct colours
This means almost every character that has official art has a model now
Jade is the only one left to get a model now!
So I'll be finishing up textures and starting on her tomorrow and then starting on some environment modeling if I have the energy and time.

Magica Riot N64 Fan Demo Update! - Cass Has Hair and Claire Can Hang Out With Her Friends Now!
I haven't done much today cause I've been tired and am going away for the weekend so have been prepping for that.
Cass now has hair though! I'll likely keep tweaking it though. I need to get the transparency working too but I'm pretty happy with the texture atm.
Again feedback and advice are appreciated!
All the girls are now in engine too!
There's gonna be no updates over the weekend too cause I won't be near my PC to work on anything.
Having 5 of like 20 characters made is nice though.
Don't have a whole lot to talk about today tbh as I haven't done much on paper but getting a pass on Cass's hair done and importing to engine.
With regards to that I was able to get her hair texture to be ridiculously small at 4x16 pixels and then tiling it.
This is the texture, I'm gonna hope Tumblr displays it properly cause it's basically too small to be visible in the preview lol.
Anyway next week I'll try get more done on the code and environment side of things cause I'm going to be gone next weekend too but for longer.

Magica Riot N64 Fan Demo Update! - Claire has more friends now!
Sara, Cass and Hana are mostly modeled now!
Cass just needs hair which I'm struggling with a little cause notoriously game dev hair tools and techniques aren't really made for black peoples hair so I need to figure out how I want to do her's properly still.
They also need some texture changes like Cass has lighter yellow on her scarf and the underside of her dress and Cass will need her own hair texture.
Cass's hair will likely take me a while to get right and could take a few iterations.
I'm all for ideas, advice and feedback on her hair because it's sadly not something I'm used to doing and I would like to get it as close to her official art as possible.
This might require me to change how I'm doing hair for everyone and I'm fine with that. It's something I've been thinking about anyway.
I had a blood test today too so I was pretty low energy so I didn't touch my code and just 3D modeled.
I might do the same again tomorrow depending as there's a lot of characters and I want to test how many I can get into a scene before the frame rate starts dropping soon.
I recon I can get 10.

Magica Riot N64 Fan Demo Update! - Claire has a friend!
I got some help with the header files! I'm pretty sure I'm not using them correctly so I'm gonna do more research on them and C++ in general so I understand how to set them up better before properly integrating them again.
In other news Claire now has a friend!!
have also slightly broken the camera so I need to fix that too.
It for some reason want's to stay at that angle unless I use the lock on and so I need to dig into my code more to fix it cause it's nowhere near how I want the camera to look.
Also yes Nova has now been added to the game!!
Her textures will be updated again later along with Claire's but she's here now stuck on a platform in a void with Claire!!
I'm probably gonna take some breaks between coding over the next few days and next week to get the other girls into the game and start working on environments while I study more C++ stuff.
It'll speed things up a bit cause atm I'm getting kinda frustrated with all the debugging I've been doing.
It'll also help me balance the workload a bit more and give me space to mix things up as I have the core character controller up and running and need to get other stuff up made before I can work on some other stuff like enemy and friendly logic and combat.
There's also a lot of art assets that need to be made tbh with the 3 levels I'm making and some extra secret stuff.
Like I need to make 15 characters and extras for the Clarion Room crowd, I need 3 levels worth of assets, a whole bunch of animations, 3 vehicles, UI elements and VFX.
And I'm probably forgetting something.

Very Small Magica Riot N64 Fan Demo Update! - While we wait, Vancent!
I had a migraine for most of the day so I didn't get much done.
I asked about the issue I was having with the code but need to wait till tomorrow for an answer unfortunately.
However here's a very early wip of Vancent!
I wanted to start on Vancent to get his scale right as I don't model vehicles a lot and I had to do something else while I wait for help with the issue I'm having using header files.
I was tempted to make Nova but figured starting on Vancent would take less brain power since I had a migraine.
Hopefully I can get more done tomorrow cause I kinda want to get the majority of this character controller done this week so I can start properly on an environment and enemies and animations and stuff.

@magicariot's Riot Purple was told there was a magical girl from another team to meet here, but my Dodeca-Yellow has no interest in being social and is using her magical stealth abilities to avoid it.
I royally messed up both faces during inking, so painted over a lot of them with acrylic paints. I also did a little pixel-by-pixel cleanup of boundaries and a little use of the blur tool after scanning.
