NASA astronauts have often named their spacecraft after human values. What does it say about our current sociopolitical environment that Artemis II named theirs Integrity? A thing we are currently in desperate need of.
It's fun to compare this to spacecraft from earlier missions.
Mercury: Freedom, Liberty Bell, Friendship, Aurora, Sigma, and Faith
Gemini: doesn't seem to've named theirs? Or if they did I can't find the names?
Apollo lunar modules: Spider, Snoopy, Eagle, Intrepid, Aquarius, Antares, Falcon, Orion, Challenger
Apollo command and service modules: Gumdrop, Charlie Brown, Columbia, Yankee Clipper, Odyssey, Kitty Hawk, Endeavor, Casper, America
Space shuttles: Columbia, Challenger, Endeavor, Atlantis, Discovery, Enterprise (test orbiter not used for actual missions. Yes it was named after Star Trek.)
There is an interesting trend where the names are generally a mixture of aspirational qualities, aerospace and astronomy references, goofy descriptions, and pop culture references. Also some people just didn't name theirs, which is disappointing.
