soooooo what was the thing in Riverbend City?

A corrupt blue in the municipal government pretended to have people available to swap out for a financial consideration, and took immigrants, mostly from Tea, who thought they were in compliance with the law.  He’d been doing this for more than a year including a spring, and part of the scam involved forging credits for his illegal immigrants so they’d see some of their acquaintances from Tea getting kids and continue to think they were on the up and up.  More than forty people in his administration were implicated in the crime or the coverup and more than two hundred immigrant families were accumulating in Riverbend City before someone blew the whistle.  The deportations were fairly horrible and the kids are awkwardly stateless since Tea won’t take them and isn’t obliged to by international law (apparently they’re going to get internationally adopted somewhere that allows that) but they can’t be here, you know?  It was incredibly controversial, I don’t know how he avoided hearing about it - it makes a little more sense if you’re foreign, I guess.

Cautionary Tale: Jiol

A two-year-old named Jiol used to attend our treatment center. She didn’t really want to go. She would skip sessions regularly, and she always complained to her parents when they made her go. Eventually they stopped making her.

Two years later, she sprung for the first time. She had never learned not to act on her disgusting impulses. Tragically, she went into the red district and had sex with several reds. She didn’t bother to take a shower, because she didn’t feel it was necessary.

At the age of four, she was executed for capital pollution violations.

Don’t let your children skip therapy. It will kill them.

That doesn’t even make any fucking sense.

If someone can’t be dissuaded from a course of action by ‘if you do this thing you randomly feel like, you will hurt tons of people’ and ‘‘if you do this thing you randomly feel like, we will literally kill you’, their problem is clearly not hyposensitivity.

We don’t have pollution instincts telling us ‘don’t defraud tons of people of money’ or ‘don’t rape people’ or ‘don’t save money on construction by cutting corners so that the building ends up unsafe to live in’. And we don’t try to deal with this by torturing children, we try to deal with this by raising children with the concept of not hurting people, making it as clear and easy to do the right thing as we can, and having laws and deterrence that people know about.

And there continue to be thousands and thousands of hyposensitive people who were not tortured and are going about their lives and not committing pollution violations. Because, amazingly enough, having a pollution sense related disability doesn’t make you randomly evil.

A few seasons ago I saw a case involving child abuse. The parents of a three year old had repeatedly beaten her for being ‘disrespectful’ to them and their friends. Their child was terrified of any and all authority figures, could hardly look at them, and would speak only when spoken to and agonizingly politely if so.

The second to last execution I attended, the condemned had been found guilty of graffitiing a building of the district administration with insults against the administrator and declarations that she should die.

I believe that the child from the first story would have never done anything like that.

Do you believe this justifies her parent’s actions?

The combination of the location and the message was considered to constitute a death threat, as well as to undermine confidence in the government, public stability, and government operations.

The judgement of the interviewer given the condemned’s conduct during the interview was also a factor, as I am given to understand.

From my reading other countries can display some similar patterns, though ours may be more official than most.

Spring is a difficult time. 

My husband has locked himself in the library. I can hear him crying sometimes if I am near. 

Sometimes I wonder if I should not have married him. If he would have had a better chance with someone else.

(My lover says ‘not chance. The chance is that he’d be dead.’ I should listen to her. We plan and act for best likelihood, that is what we can do. It does not feel sufficient.)

(...And if we are by some chance somehow granted a permission someday, it will still not be the child he truly wants. It can never be.)

Unusually bad blues are responsible for the deaths of millions and hundreds of millions.

More regularly bad blues execute innocents, protect the guilty, let people suffer and die to benefit themselves, misuse and abuse those with less power, take the power vested in them for the good of society and use it to make the people who should be able to trust in them worse off in a thousand large and small ways.

I think it is telling, given this, if someone’s standards for ‘should not be blue’ is ‘I have heard second hand that they are not very good at math’.

from @magicistheworld, to @blazar, privately: I do not wish to presume, but in the case that Shasali Aven's marriage might have been chosen for need over personal welfare, I know several blues in relations of power disparity who might have knowledge and experience of specifics and who I could set up contact with, if there is need and interest. They are not ex-reds, and would not share that, but of course that cannot be offered. (I hope there is not need. But I would rather offer and be wrong.)

Uh, so this is now the pseudo-official source of Anitami red/ex-red news on tumblr, I guess.  So.  Shasali Aven is getting married to Inlad Elagen, who was born blue.  I guess I can take questions on that too since Shasali Aven is busy.

I have not been able to find very much about Inlad Elagen. I hope that he is doing this because he has come to love her, or cares about the cause and also her, and is not the kind to be doing it for the kind of power one can get over a spouse, in situations such as this.

I hope that Shasali Aven will be well and happy in her marriage.

(If it is the second, I hope she has been able to make as her own a choice as can be made in such, and has friends and others she can go to for solace if not for help. I do not deny the right of people to choose that, when they are the ones who choose. But I hope that she will be well.)

So my sister may have added -deactivated to her url but she didn’t delete the blog, and she wrote down her password, so.

Elsfar’s dead. She got executed, treason charges. It was at the beginning of spring, someone reported her double-bagging things and leaving them for the garbage collectors, the government was still paranoid about anyone who might be smuggling them guns, since the ones in Evalee must have gotten them somehow - Elsfar swore in the interviews it was just clothes and books but they didn’t believe her - anyway. My sister is dead. 

She was - Elsfar was really, really unhappy, for most of her life. I don’t think that came across online but she was. She’d been in a downward spiral since Orvara, by the time Biyan’s reds started rioting we all knew something was incredibly wrong, that doesn’t excuse some of the things she said but I hope it helps explain them. 

Anyway. My sister is dead. It’s been a long time since she posted anything but I thought you might want to know.

My sincerest condolences.

I also lost my sister to execution, and I always knew that she did what she did knowing the consequences and still intending to do exactly what she did, and that that is what happened.

I can only imagine it is worse in every respect without that.

I was required to attend an execution today.

It is a duty I do not find easy.

My husband was not required to come with me. I am glad for that.

(I believe one of the new servants noticed my mood, though I do try not to display it. I believe she thinks it is due to my own family background. It is not, at least not most largely so. (I might doubt myself in this more but my lover says the same and she has seen more family deaths than I have.))

Her family is - difficult at the best of times.

These times are tense and likely to get more so.

I hope we may all carry through.
