Okay so we all know the things that Harry, Ron and Hermione had to do to get to the sorcerer’s stone in the first book. Devils Snare, the key, the riddle and Wizarding Chess. We know that the Chess set was the work of Professor Mcgonagall, and assuming the protections were meant to work that means that Mcgonagall would have to have been an incredible chess player. Not above average, like GrandMaster level player. Given this when Ron beats McGonagall she is taken aback. Only 3 other people have beaten her, Albus, Severus and Tom Riddle. She takes to playing chess with Ron in the nights following in the common room (Ron doesn’t sleep at all until Harry wakes up and is back in the dorm). She has not beaten him. At the end of year feast when Dumbledore awards him points for the “best chess game Hogwarts have ever seen” the Slytherins and Ravenclaws are utterly ill. Throughout the rest of his Hogwarts career Ron is challenged by more and more students to play chess, Theo Nott, loses to him and the Slytherin students begin to look at him differently. Half of the Ravenclaws in their year watch in awe as he swiftly beats Parma. It continues like this through his time at Hogwarts, he has never lost. The Slytherin students begin to see his cunning mins, right after he beats Pucey, who is infamous for thinking 20 steps ahead. When Ron beats Marietta Edgecombe the Ravenclaws begin to follow him, they watch nearly all of his matches and take notes, completely ignoring the 5 pave paper due tomorrow. After Ron has beaten all of the students Snape (who has been listening to the whispers in the Slytherin common room) challenges him. The whole school watches with bated breath. It is well known that Snape has only ever lost to two people: Dumbledore and Voldemort. McGonagall promises him 15 Knuts if he wins, she can’t contain the shame any longer.

The ensuing chess match takes place over the span of several days, Snape is frequently writing late notes for the students who wish to see it. Other teachers are arriving to their respective classes late. Every time the game is paused Dumbledore casts the anti-tampering ward. This continues for nearly a week, Ron wins. Snape has never respected a Gryffindor more in his life (he is doubly harsh on him in potions, you beat one of the best players in the nation and you mean to tell me your potion is still bubbling??[Ron knows that Snape is seeing him, he just smiles and tweets for a few minutes before a perfect potion is bottled{Snape keeps them in his personal store]}) Eventually Ron is set to play Dumbledore, he is utterly terrified. Soon enough the match is the talk of Wizards across the nation, the Weasley family are all overjoyed for him, win or lose. The game begins and reporters from the Daily Prophet are there, Ron almost cracks, almost In the end after a week and a half Dumbledore’s eyes twinkle, with renewed vigor as he forfeits. Word gets out to Voldemort- he immediately tries to recruit Ron as a Death Eater. Every time Ron rejects him Voldemort sends an increasingly expensive and rare gift. Eventually Ron says if Voldemort vows to not hurt Harry that he will play him in chess, just once. The winner decides their own boon. The world is watching with baited breath as the best chess player and one of the most calculating minds in a century take the stage.The game lasts fornearly 2 weeks, a peace settles over the UK that has not been since Voldemort rose in that grave. The two declare a tie. No body wins, but Voldemort does realize that the war has become far too brutish.

last week i wrote in my journal about putting in effort to have something to look forward to each day and this week i decided to join a local journaling hang-out in my favorite coffee shop. small things like these really do change your perspective on living. it makes me feel that i am more than just a person who’s got a full-time job 5 days a week. i get to go out of my shell, have fun with my friends and do things i genuinely love doing which is ultimately what life should be about. here’s to more days filled with small but definite happiness.

i’m making another post about @mohammedsh88 and his current situation because honestly i’m desperate to get him to his goal and i’m not sure what i can do besides appeal to you guys.

prefacing this by saying that this fundraiser has been verified. i’ve spoken to mohammed personally and he’s in an extremely difficult spot, yet he still finds the time to check on me and to thank me for doing the bare minimum of caring about his situation.

winter is arriving and his wife has a baby on the way. her pregnancy is high risk and she’s at risk for premature labor. his long term goal to eventually escape and rebuild his life is £120,000. his short term goal to prepare for the baby and survive the winter is £5000. he has only raised £800 so far.

The canon explanation and my personal take fall pretty well in line. He doesn’t want Flora to be hurt.

Where my personal take gets a little deeper is why there’s the double standard with Luke. He’s (probably) years younger and yet Hershel never even considers not letting him come alone. That’s due to the slightly fucked yo codependency they’ve got. Flora is his ward. She kinda got dumped on him with no way out and his only instruction is to keep her happy and safe or whatever. Flora is a secret third thing between a burden and a daughter. She’s a responsibility, and as much as he doesn’t seem to recognize danger when it comes to Luke, he repeatedly keeps Flora behind. It’s not that he doesn’t like her, but instead that she’s something too precious and fragile. He’s had his fair share of loss, and repeating that again isn’t an option.

Luke is younger, but they have a different relationship. Luke is a constant. He’s a comfort. Luke doesn’t leave no matter what, and that’s the other side of the coin to his distance from Flora. Luke is rarely turned down (with the exception of the fortress and accessing classified documents.) he’s there when he loses Claire, he’s there in Monte D’or, he’s there in the sanctuary. It’s all bolstered by AL in that sense too. They’re the only two remaining together into CV, and Luke pretty much knows Hershel as well as he knows himself. Luke gave Hershel a reason to stop a lot of his self destructive behaviors exhibited in LS.

That isn’t to say that he should be taking Luke along everywhere, or continue leaving Flora behind, but it is an explanation.

Of course the real reason comes down to lvl 5 making a misogynistic joke at her expense. Haha leave the woman behind yada yada. You know

Minor spoilers for AL, MM, UF going forward (I don’t remember who’s played what game sorry) but it’s nothing super revealing or explicit

A lot of his behaviors aren’t exactly seen as explicitly destructive. It’s a lot of little details that paint a larger picture.

Also a lot of it comes in that he used to be much worse before what we see in the games.

First example off the top of my head is in Last Specter. Our first introduction to him is that he’s been sleeping on the couch. Rosa implicated that it’s not an uncommon thing, and that he also frequently forgets to eat (the line ‘I hope he remembers to eat something’ is changed a little between versions iirc). He isn’t close with his fellow teachers, as told by Rosa (‘it’s no wonder the other professors are so intimidated by you’ or something to that effect) and also his flavor text in UF implicating he doesn’t know the name of the professor in the office neighboring his.

His retelling of his assault in UF says that he repeatedly tried to find out what happened to Claire even after he was almost beaten to death. Yes, this shows his motivation and drive for the truth etc etc but at some point it’s not safe for him to continue that. And he did stop.

Most of his destructive behavior lies on the mental front. He’s incredibly good at repressing his feelings and expressions, and is so desperate to detach and not form connections with others. That stems from repeated trauma (with his family, then Randall, then Claire), but he doesn’t seem to recognize or attempt to move past it. Luke is a whole different story and I could go on a tangent about how Emmy plays into that. But the bottom line is that he’s learned that human connection gets him hurt, and that the best way to avoid that hurt is to isolate himself.

Which he did. For nearly a decade until he met Luke and even then there’s quite a few rocky patches.

Him being a gentleman is a defense mechanism. It’s a wall between him and everyone else. A mask to see through but not be seen as who he really is. (I’ve already mentioned in a few posts how I think that correlates with him being autistic but this isn’t about that). His detachment from others and refusal to form connection spans into the side of being detrimental to him, which is why I classify it as a destructive behavior.
