Well. Where do I start. Sorry I'm spreading so much negativity to everyone who enjoyed the finale, I am just so salty and disappointed about it. Like it if you want, and I'm glad you could find closure. Maybe don't read further.
Soo let's get into everything that felt wrong with this.
First of all, s1 and the book were about humans. Crowley and Aziraphale were just dragged along, but humans were driving the story. That shifted a bit in S2 but still humans played a central part with Nina and Maggie and everyone else in Whickber street, and especially in the historical minisodes.
In this finale, humans didn't have any impact in the story, they didn't get a say in the final decision, and the one human who would've been interesting make some decisions in the end (Jesus) did NOTHING and died. Too bad he never really gets a go.
Then, the thing was that humans, and even Crowley and Aziraphale were perfectly able to execute free will, and live their lives, and be human, DESPITE the meddling of Heaven and Hell. It was always about DEFYING God, defying the systems that oppress us and not destroying them, because we can make them better.
Remember that Adam wanted to destroy the world and remake it better when he was the antichrist? His friends talked him out of it. They decided to fix the world, not destroy it. You can leave someone alone to live their life without destroying and replacing them.
It was also about Rebellion. Rebelling not with violence, but with reason and gestures and sticking to what you believe. Crowley and Aziraphale convincing everyone that the great plan was different. Adam telling Satan he's not his dad. Anathema burning the second book of prophecies. Crowley and Aziraphale's love despite heaven and hell. The arrangement, made out of laziness but ultimately rebelling against the idea of good and evil forces influencing humanity.
Crowley and Aziraphale always wanted to protect their peaceful, fragile existence on earth. That was their main goal throughout the first two seasons. Now you could argue they've grown and sacrificed themselves heroically, but to me it seems a lot like giving up. Crowley was always depressed and the ending for him was that he decides to die? Smart Crowley, who always has a Loophole up his sleeve, who always talks himself out of every situation, couldn't think of anything else? And more importantly, in what world would he allow AZIRAPHALE to be erased? Though with Aziraphale being just as out of character as him I can't blame Crowley for it because Aziraphale was cold to him the entire film. No real apology, a forced "I forgive you" and they never even got to talk about what happened between them. Their relationship was just as badly written as everything else in this season, and I'm not just talking about the fact they didn't kiss.
Great resolution to the queer Lovestory, whose love was SO star-crossed that they decide to throw the towel and just die instead. Good Omens always emphasized that Love wins, be it the love between the antichrist and his human dad, the love between the supreme archangel and the Duke of hell, the love between a Record Shop owner and a Coffee shop owner (and yes they fell in love), the love between two immortal, ineffable beings, and their love for humanity.
Love always wins, but this time Love lost. Because yes, there was a new universe. Maybe a better one. Maybe there were many. But the universe that we spent two seasons with, the one filled with characters we loved, the one that lived for 6000 years, the universe of Crowley and Aziraphale, it was ERASED. They were erased. The word ended. Anyone remember how it was about stopping Armageddon? Yeah, about that.
And if our children die and are replaced with new ones, I will not be happy about it, because I quite liked the old ones, thank you very much.
So yeah even if you ignore the messy writing, the rushedness and the circumstances surrounding this finale, it was bad. And it had nothing to do with the story we experienced so far. Sure there were a few moments that made me laugh, but it felt hollow and rushed, and definitely not a worthy ending to this story that brought us all so much joy.
I will go look for some fanfiction now, and it won't be hard to find one that's better than this.
