cameron is kind of weird about parents, isn't she?

we've talked before about how she seems to be somewhat naive when it comes to specific forms of abuse: she's well aware of physical/sexual abuse, but seems oblivious to chase and house's issues with their fathers -- if rowan never hit chase, how bad could he be?

but then there's also safe, where cameron immediately takes a dislike to melinda, calling her a "brat" because she is half-heartedly rebellious: her mother is over-protective, but loves her, so why is she sneaking around and complaining? (and then we also see that cameron can be similarly overprotective in a 'for-your-own-good' controlling way when she's involved in these sorts of situations.) (but then there's also lines in the sand, where she doesn't seem to approve of the patient's parents -- i don't know.)

i think the read that makes the most sense to me is, cameron has Good Parents, if maybe a bit old fashioned or strict, and so she believes generally that you should do what your parents say, as they have your best interests at heart. she carves out exceptions for Obvious Abuse, but doesn't really have a framework for the more "subtle" kinds of abuse such as chase's brand of neglectful father, or house's father's "honesty" (especially since i'm not sure they were on the radar as much back then).

she herself has a sort of paternalistic "for your own good" streak: as long as she (or house) has Good Intentions, she believes that covers a fair amount of other things: it's okay to hide things from patients for their own good, so as not to upset them, etc. but then again, chase mentions in lockdown that she's told off her father for yelling at her mother over christmas, so... maybe she's grown? maybe it's more layered? in any case it's a fascinating and consistent trait/flaw for sure.

fucks me up that after forever foreman gets really quiet compared to s1-2. now cameron is the only one to speak up, and i love it, i love cameron but damn..house's speech broke him, didn't it?

watched the french dub of lines in the sand tonight and had some fascinating takeaways:

-cuddy uses the formal vous to address both wilson and house. which is already fascinating on its own (i expected her to ‘vous’ wilson and the fellows, but not house), but also…house vouvoyers her back? so much of his disrespectful snark towards her is the same but he’s using the formal vous the whole time which is a crazy tonal clash lmao.

-also, house and wilson ARE on ‘tu’ terms, which means the dub isn’t just blanket vous-ing everyone because they’re colleagues. i’m obviously not surprised that they’re using the informal with one another but it makes me even more interested in a) why they decided house and cuddy are still on vous terms (maybe they started dubbing with ‘vous’ back in s1 and then decided to stick with it even as house and cuddy obviously got closer? but that raises some fascinating questions about vous vs tu in s7 lol), and b) finding out what terms the fellows are on (because they don’t address each other directly at all this episode—even chase and cameron’s convo while searching the house doesn’t contain any direct ‘you’ing).

-see above: can’t wait to watch s3 fwb era in this dub and see if cameron and chase start ‘tu’ing each other at work

-can confirm all the names are still the same so ‘house’ is not translated to ‘maison’ unfortunately. although they do pronounce cuddy’s name in the most ostentatiously french way ever lol (especially in comparison to wilson/house)

-chase still has an accent!!! i actually can’t parse what it is because my listening skills kind of suck (i think it might be marseillaise but don’t quote me on that) but his intonation is def not the same as cam/foreman/house which is fun

anyway those are the main things i noticed. disclaimer i am only like B1 french and also i only watched this one episode so these things may change across seasons but i think the vous/tu stuff is soooo cool because it’s obviously not a differentiation we have in english!

The ending of House MD “Informed Consent” may be a contender for my favorite scene of the whole show. I’m not generally a Cameron girlie, but it’s such a brilliant distillation of her character (to me Cameron’s character has always been about following principles, sometimes at the expense of rules) with barely any dialogue at all. It makes House’s last line hit like a gut punch, especially because we’re not expecting it from him, and also because there’s absolutely no doubt that he means it. Cameron did something she wasn’t supposed to do in order to do the right thing, and House respects her for it. He’s proud of her for it. It’s just so well written and acted. Laurie and Morrison are fantastic here.

I think it's telling that in No Reason, during the hallucination, House yells at Wilson and Cuddy saying that they had no right, even though ultimately we see that it was a treatment he wanted. I think it shows that he does feel violated by what Stacy did, at least somewhat, and that he cares, at least at some level, about patient autonomy. I think this actually comes up in Forever too, like House usually browbeats patients into making the choice he thinks they should, but ultimately when faced with someone refusing treatment, he doesn't push back. I think it's possible it simply comes from wanting patients to make good choices rather than simply wanting to pursue treatment at all costs. Of course that's sort of out the window with Informed Consent, but I'd argue even DNR? Yes, absolutely, it's a massive violation to resuscitate someone who doesn't want to be resuscitated (real doctors who do that, at least knowingly, deserve what they get and worse), but ultimately it came from his (ultimately correct) conviction that the patient was making that decision based off inaccurate information, and therefore his belief that he was making the "wrong" choice. Of course, patients should have the autonomy to make "wrong" choices, but still, I think it says something about House when he yells about his autonomy being violated. It wasn't about his leg, it was about the principle.

who is your current fave on house and why? what ep and season are you on? explain yourself 👀

ok so in terms of favourite character it's a shuffle between cameron, foreman, and wilson depending on the hour of the day.

cameron because she feels, so intensely and deeply and leads with that and it really doesn't mean she's perfect or anything but it makes her a super strong character in everything she does and i love to watch it. her trauma regarding her husband and grief shows up really well across episodes and the things she says about grief and death stay with me long after that particular arc is done. how uncomfortable and in pain she is in 1x04 maternity, how she struggles to deliver the news, how she keeps searching long after she's certain that it's cancer in 2x01 acceptance. do you see what i mean like she cares and has a strong moral compass but her caring stems from a place that has so many dimensions and nuances to it. she's not a one dimensional character in any way and i love that. to give a fuck means she's miserable and she can't help it! she's screaming crying throwing up every step of the way but she still does it. she has an odd relationship with control and how it works in tandem with her moral compass—'you can't control your emotions' (said by wilson in 2x06 spin), to which cameron says 'just your actions'. she really commits to that shit and it's fantastic. also she really is unapologetic when it really matters—she can be awkward sometimes but when it counts my girl says bro idc and goes full steam ahead and it's a joy to watch.

foreman because of how well he's fleshed out. he's got so much of house in him and so much of that drive to find the answer, to find the right diagnosis. i love how it ties into his insecurity and imposter syndrome in a way that is at once significant without being the first thing you notice about him—he's the fellow that questions his place at diagnostics and places a great deal of his pride on each diagnosis and each assumption he makes—when it's obvious to Everyone else that he's the one that house gives a fuck about the most. i'm Such a fan of his arcs with house—my absolute favourite dynamic ever in fiction involves character a who is suspiciously similar to character b and doesn't want to be (but wants to be) and character b who makes heart eyes in the corner and that's forehouse to me. (nobody is surprised that user quillinhand latched on to the most mjjw-like dynamic there is :/ lmfao) in addition to his similarities to house, the one thing i love most about foreman is that he tries, he changes, he genuinely does change how he operates when he figures out he's doing something wrong, yk? gah i love him. thinking of 1x10 histories and 2x01 acceptance it's so great. i actually really like his boss arc in season 2—there were other episodes that showed all his internal workings better but this was a wholistic view of how his pride and preconceptions intersected with that insecurity and imposter syndrom and that's fascinating.

wilson cuz he's weird. he's genuinely weird. in comparison to the rest of the cast he's rather boring but what makes him scratch my brain is that he's weirdly committed to appearing normal and boring and the victim in all cases and has a rather odd relationship to that appearance. he's got a great surface level image that he projects of himself—kind, doctor who slaves away for his friend, who is the most compassionate oncologist there is, who is good to everyone and everything, who's maybe a little boring but who cares! he's a good guy! and then you peel back the curtain and there's like a blob of grey something behind the lab coat. he got married thrice and fucked it up all three times, he HAS NO FRIENDS BESIDE HOUSE, he SLEPT WITH A PATIENT, he's aware that house has an addiction and continues to prescribe vicodin while concocting level 4 schemes to manipulate his best friend. he's got such a weird relationship with his own self concept—he really believes he's the good guy and the victim while simultaneously cheating on his wives and doing unhinged shit with an idgaf attitude while simultaneously working hard to project that good!version of himself to everyone. cognitive dissonance to an extreme. many examples but i'm thinking of how he cheated on his wife all throughout seasons 1 and 2 but when he finds out julie had been cheating on him in 2x14 bro goes :0. there's a tamil joke i'm thinking of from an old movie where a character tells another: 'so if you bleed it's blood but if other's do it's tamarind chutney.' and that's like wilson's whole thing imo. idiot.

ok. i'm done yapping now. i finished 2x20 euphoria pt1 way back when and i've been putting off watching pt2 because a) pt1 made me freak out so much i started doing a meditation class b) i have been (Trying) to post my notes on the episodes and i haven't been Able to cuz reasons and my brain won't me move on so i'm rewatching season 1 w family instead. hopefully i'll finish those notes before summer ends and finish season two sometime within the next month (this is why i don't start shows i'm so SLOW 😩)

i really feel like the six months of camchase marriage we didn't get to see are so. i want a fanfic for every DAY of it. like it's all the domestic fluff and yet they don't even realize that they're on a timer. that in a year chase will be convinced she never loved him and she will be convinced he has been irrevocably changed and poisoned. they will both believe none of this was real. and yet in the moment

they're making vacation plans for next year, for their proper honeymoon. cameron does the grocery shopping and knows just what cereal to buy. chase has her favorite orders at 6 different takeout places memorized. they bicker over their joint account because chase keeps dipping into it to buy flowers and snacks, but also sports memorabilia, and cameron thinks he should use his money for that but the flowers are for her

she keeps cans of ginger ale hidden in the ER, separate from the ones for patients, because chase likes a ginger ale after surgery and almost always comes down to see her sooner or later. chase is on texting terms with her brother and parents. at least one of their neighbors has met them as "dr allison cameron" and "yeah, nice to meet you, i'm chase" and so is under the impression his name is chase cameron and he isn't a doctor and cameron wants to correct this and chase thinks it's very funny. he's not a very good cook but whenever he makes pasta for them cameron is so complimentary. their first argument as a married couple was about a mangled pen chase had chewed on. cameron insists "we should never go to bed angry" but breaks her own rule. cameron wants to throw dinner parties and chase is so reluctant. they once had a competition to see who was the better suturer. chase has a tiny little closet of an office as a surgeon, and fills it with pictures of cameron he says is to present a good image of himself for patients. no one is fooled. they like to read in bed together like dorks

whenever either of them slips up at home and calls the other "cameron" or "chase," they have to pay the other a dollar. cameron gets really hangry if she doesn't eat, and chase can't help teasing her about it. they have a big whiteboard calendar where they manage their work schedules but also plan dates. he loves to drag her on spontaneous weekend trips and it tends to stress her out a little. she gets really anxious if she doesn't know where he is -- not constantly, not controllingly, but if she doesn't have a vague idea what chase is doing she starts to worry something is wrong and he's dead in a ditch somewhere. they try to have dates where they "do things," go out, not just have dinner. chase always tries to get the beach involved. cameron drags them to museums and symphonies and Culture. chase was sure she'd be all over house to check on him when he was in mayfield and out of mayfield, and it was making him insecure but he was telling himself that it would be the height of dickishness to say anything, be NORMAL, and then she was totally disinterested and chase was like. okay :) yay :)

they're trying to get pregnant. not quite at the "timing ovulation" stage, but no birth control, if it happens it happens, they hope it does. they both know that it's only been three months and that's nothing, they have plenty of time, but they're both a bit disappointed it didn't happen first try. (cameron has griped about this to cuddy who heroically didn't strangle her.) chase steals her shampoo and body wash because he's lazy but also thinks it smells nice, so she buys more and more "girly" scents. he thinks she looks cute in her reading glasses. she resents him for never having a stray zit. she steals his shirts. he is a big believer in the Laundry Chair, to her annoyance, he's the main laundry person in the house so he thinks it's fine. his life's mission is to teach her to surf.

something interesting i found while rewatching scenepacks from s1-2 and what i will promtly dub forehouse coffee thing

in paternity after house catches foreman exhaused from the nightly search of the patient he offers to brew him some coffee

which raises eyebrows both from foreman and the viewer. well, at least it surprised me, since at that point in time house barely knows foreman. they solved one case together. you would think that house is laying foundation for a punchline or some snideful (probably racist) comment but

the scene is played straight! house gives foreman his coffee, foreman drinks it without any concequences for his well-being, everyone moves on with the diagnostics

later in forever, when foreman struggles with identifying shapes due to his brain damage, house once again steps in and helps him make some coffee, which includes: ripping a coffee bag with his teeth and putting a filter in place

"until you can make your own coffee, hands off the patients"

i just find it endearing that whenever foreman struggles either mentally or physically within proximity of a coffee machine, house is here to brew him a cup. these acts of care are a really subtle and interesting aspect of his character, with or without the shipping lense

Finished season 2! Man, what a whirlwind of an episode to end on. I enjoyed a peek at House's inner workings and the general sense of abscency and unease he has in this long dialogue with himself.

I've long sang praises for how cinematics and sound design enchance the theme of each episode, but this one came surprisingly close to breaking the script wide open with how much bending of the formula it did. House can't hold the case together at his own and his loneliness unravels not only him, but the episode itself, which was a wonder to see.

Speaking of loneliness: yeah, this episode bangs you in the head with how much House relies on people for a guy who likes to hear himself talk. He has the same unhealthy attachement for his team just like they have for him! And when they become docile, when they become agreeable, when House truly is the center of the world he pulls all the stops just to get! out!! As much as he has fear of losing control, ironically, being in complete control just circles back to him being helpless.

Also there is something cathartic at just watching him run up and down the stairs. Getting the feel for walking without pain. It's a small detail but MAN it's heartbreaking when you think about it. Some distant part of his subconsciousness wants him to be cured, to be happy, wants the pain to end

shout out to house md season 2 for having an episode's moral dilemma revolve around toxic yuri. woman gives up half her liver for her girlfriend who has secretly been planning to break up with her but it turns out the woman knows and is only doing the surgery so the girlfriend will have to stay out of guilt. up there in the top 5 crazy homosexuals in this show
