“That sounds fascinating. I enjoy studying when I can and have been making many notes about animals and friends, the park is probably a great place to study all sorts of things.” Kaban felt good about working with Catalina since she was probably a human who was used to walking long distances over difficult terrain.
“Lucky-San could you turn on your compass mode? I wanna see what’s happening myself.”
“Affirmative Kaban.”
The park guide’s smart watch started to display a digital compass which seemed to move like a real one.
“I’d like to see if our compasses react the same way or differently… and I’m curious what we might find by using them in tandem.”
Well she could not say that she has seen something of that sort before. Then again she was never caught up with technology half the time. Despite having a smart phone, she still used a walk-man or a cd player to listen to music from time to time. That fact alone had her employee, Phoebe, cracking up one day when she saw it.
Her own compass was held in her hand, giving a nod as the trek continued on towards the location. She still remembered the distinct features.
"That's a good way to form a hypothesis." She was not sure if the technology would hold up if the magnetic pull was strong enough but once again, technology was always something she felt lost with.
"Have you always had your...I believe you called it lucky, yeah?"
" what? no!!! " Ohta gave her a dumbfounded look, almost as if what she was implying was SO out there- something that NEVER happened & never was going to happen. " i just came by to- " he paused while he looked around slowly. it was obvious he was trying to come up with an excuse.
"...browse. yeah. " he finally replied with a slight nod to himself, seemingly satisfied with the answer. " cause I didn't really get to last time... " y'know, since he was WAY too busy with scrutinizing & questioning her (after the whole chase movie-eqsue sequence). " I just still don't believe this place is legit! "
"...To browse?"
Even a toddler would have known that was a lie. Either way, she'll humor the kid. Even if it meant giving her a bigger headache in the long run.
She would have gone as far and tease that he was looking for a better excuse. Her arms fold as her amused expression remained on her face. He was so startled the last time she had used the bare basics of her magics. She remembered the reaction like it was just last week.
"I thought you didn't believe in magic. So why browse through my store? "
Yeah she is saying she does not believe what he is telling her, but in a subtle way.
Oh! Well that didn't change their opinion of her at all! In fact, it made them rather curious! They never could get too close to animals before so maybe...
" In that case...can I pet the animals later? I have never been on a ranch before and only heard about them! Do you have horses? " Lucen had only seen horses but didn't get the chance to pet them! To be fair, most animals kind of felt weirded out by them.
"I have two horses." She responds while holding up two fingers towards Lucen. A smile was made as she softly warned the other about one of her horses, "Orti isn't fond of other people. So I think it's best if you got to pet Rico."
Catalina had seen the aftermath of Orti's reckless behavior. Then again, that is usually what happens when you are given items gifted by fae. Especially animals.
"I recently got some goats and sheep for now. You can pet them as well if you want?" She continued to walk towards the town so they could visit the local pub for a meal. It was great that the weather was agreeable.

"If it wasn't, I would not have reached out in the first place." Admits Catalina while her brow arched. She was fairly experienced in the field of magic, mainly in demon hunting. It was not difficult to figure out the genus and subspecies. After all she had expertise in the field due to her family ties.
"Considering there is no lingering scent," The witch points out, "Or any semblance of energy I can sense, I figured this is a whole new ball game."
The cathedral walls were so well adorned and well loved over the ages. She could tell there was always constant upkeep but in reality places as such had always made her so uneasy. Her heels were cushioned by the rug below her. She was grateful that her footsteps did not echo. Catalina never liked the attention and she did everything in her power to stay away from watchful eyes.
Those days were gone. At least she’d like to believe so. Forty two years old and here she was, walking into a new workplace. A new town and hopefully with a new face. Hair that had been dyed consistently at the suggestion of her ex was now chopped into a bob. Healthy brown curls bounced as she moved and a part of her regretted not trying her hair up into a bun.
It was a job interview. Not a meeting at all. On her way in passing, she felt a chill run up her spine. As if a pair of eyes were boring into the back of her head. Naturally, she turned her head to spot the origin of this feeling. Seeing no one else, her eyes soon locked onto a man who sat in the pews. He appeared to be mumbling to himself, hands pressed together. His head was lowered and she had wondered if he was merely here for a confession. For someone who didn’t want to stand out so much, she found herself curious about the lives of others. Far more than she needed to be.
“Ms. Garza.” Another man spoke to her as she turned her attention towards the priest. She mustered up the warmest smile possible before approaching him, “Father. I came as soon as I got your message. I am very honored you’d provide me with the opportunity to work under the Vatican. If I am being honest, I was very surprised that you offered work to outside sources.”
The man’s hands carefully took hers, the rosary pressed against her skin as her mind was brought back towards a faint time in the past. Part of her restrained from clutching the pendant that was firmly placed against her chest. She felt guilty that she was not a believer of the same god, but she at least understood how the concept of faith worked. She had her own creator to worship, one she had hoped was real after so long. “Ms. Garza, we have heard many stories of your feats against Satan's loyal servants. We believe that is the best attitude to have in mind against those devils. We only offer our services to the best of the best.”
Her eyes remained on the man far longer than she wanted to admit. Lips parted but nothing could come out. How does she explain that she merely collected them due to family tradition? It was mere coincidence that it just happened these stories made it to the church. While lost in her thoughts, the priest lifted his head up, “Ah, Alexander. Just in time.”
The witch’s head lifts up at the mention of a name and soon turns towards the guest. The man from earlier. The one in the pews she had passed, “Ms. Garza, Alexander here is a wonderful worker of the Lord. He has exercised so many demons since he was a young boy. Born and raised by the church. A beacon of what our mission is about.”
Her hand was held out for a shake. He grasped it quickly but Catalina saw no issue in this. She could not image the social conditioning he held solely by being raised in the church. Her hand gave a firm shake. His grip was a lot stronger than she thought, her gaze followed back towards his face but he merely peered down at their connected hands, “A-Ah...nice to meet you Alexander. I’m- ”
“Catalina Alma Garza. You’ve completed exactly two hundred fifty six exorcisms in just this year alone. Each demon removed from either a mundane or a building.” The man explains in a hushed voice. His thumb idly strokes the back of her palm as he continues to speak, “Your most recent one was a demon's nest at the Martin home back in Los Angeles. Satanist worshipers that got out of hand as the reports say.”
She stood there in shock as she finally remembered to breathe. Was the church spying on her after all this time? Why did that bother her so? The connection was then broken off by the priest present. He released her hand promptly after, clasping his own hands together before motioning towards the backway, “If you may allow it, I’d like to introduce you to the others.”
The witch’s head nodded slowly before she began to walk. Her hand placed over the one that had been held far too long as she moved. Her gaze follows back towards the man as now his back was to her. Teeth sunk into her bottom lip as she recognized that behavior before. He saw her as no threat.
For some reason, deep down buried into her gut…a part of that realization scared her.
“Hmmm if I understand correctly a compass works because the planet is itself a magnet perhaps there’s something more magnetic in the area… I wonder if it could be human technology.” Kaban thinks out loud for a moment. That was an exciting prospect, but there wasn’t enough evidence to know for sure.
“Whatever the case I’m sure the professor will want to hear about it. You’re a botanist Catalina-San?” Kaban asked as she double checked what she had in her bag. Catalina would have mentioned if anything weird was going on with the local plants… this was quite a mystery…
“Looks like I’m all set. Please lead the way.”
"Oh I'm not a botanist." Laughs the witch as she was happy to explain to the girl, "I'm an anthropologist. Cultural specifically. I study people's customs and the environment around them."
That was an extremely short version of what she actually did but she figured if there were more questions asked, she'd be happy to answer.
Her job entailed quite a bit of exploration and discovery. It also landed her in interesting spots and situations. At least this one wasn't dangerous... she had hoped not.
At the instruction of leading the way, Catalina nods and slowly begins the trek back towards the location in question, holding onto the compass in question as she monitors it for the reaction.
To them it was simply natural! Mostly because some old habits simply refused to vanish. They wouldn't know what else to do with their shed antlers...so why not gift them?
Though hearing her explaination made sense to them! Animals were sensitive so who were they do impose their presence onto them? Even if it was just in part.
" Oh my...I understand! I wouldn't want to upset your animals! Your farm must be great! I'm sure many think so! " They said, convinced that many people must rely on her somehow. Probably because of them being raised in a rather isolated village.
"Oh I own a ranch." Catalina corrects with a smile, "I only tend to animals, I don't do any farming myself."
It was a misconception she heard quite often but she was always willing to explain if it meant that cleared things up, "I mainly foster cattle. When I was a kid, my grandfather and I would watch after animals full time."
A shrug followed as she placed her hands into the front pockets of her jeans, expression still calm despite the earlier mishap, "Farmers might rely on me, so I guess that counts?"
" what? no!!! " he NEVER did not even once! things changed sometimes, or sometimes he just had to explain a little better then he did before, & people were ALWAYS misunderstanding him- but he was as consistent as consistent could GET!
" seriously? " if she wasn't one to judge, then why was she calling him out for being a thief & criminal & wishy-washy? sure, maybe he got a little (LOT) defensive about it, but that's just because of how she said all those things!!
okay, no, now he knew it DEFINITELY wasn't all in his head. that was 100% a threat she didn't even TRY to hide it!! " what'd you mean by that? If anything bites me, I'm gonna bite it back!! " put those sharp teeth of his to use.
"Are you sure you would be able to bite back?" Teases the witch as she watches his movements. In all honesty, trying to picture this kid attempt to bite her massive familiar back was amusing. How do you latch onto something that had no set physical form?
A smile graced her features once more as she snorts in return. For some reason, this kid always seemed to entertain her with the silliest notions.
"Either way," She hums while moving the newspaper into a shelf space within the counter, "Did you come here to hide from someone again?"
She lifts the gate open, moving her way through before glancing around, taking note of the stock for the time being. "I don't want to make this into a habit after all."
And so all I touched.
Glimmered with hope.
Yet dimmed with reality.

" hey!! its not like I AM a thief or anything- " so now he was contradicting himself even MORE then before. alright then... just don't believe ANYTHING he says. he may or may not have been a thief, & a murderer, but he was 100% confirmed as someone who was just saying things without thinking about what it meant. not as bad as being a liar, probably, but it was much harder for him to keep up & make a coherent 'story' for himself.
" it's not who i am... i-it's just something i have to do sometimes! " y'know, to make ends meet- or when the mischievous urge hits, or just to stir up trouble, or to get back at someone... " i just do whatever i have to! " & some stuff he DEFINITELY didn't have to, too.... " besides, i got kicked out of school &- " he stopped immediately, then stared at her with narrowed eyes full of SUSPICION. " -so you're fine with criminals just... hanging around here? "
"You like to flip flop a lot, huh?" Mused the witch with a smile. Hearing him scramble on was entertaining. Until she heard that he got kicked out of school. Lips pursed and brows furrowed slightly before her expression returned to a neutral state.
Maybe she was weird... But she had fought tooth and nail to have the luxury of going to a physical school. Homeschooling was isolating for her. A constant reminder of the truth she tried to hard to ignore. Her mind could not comprehend someone easily giving that up.
Her arms rest upon the checkout counter, idly fidgeting with the newspaper, the texture brushing against her finger tips.
A means to keep herself distracted.
"I mean, everyone's got a story for what they do." A shrug was made as she skimmed over printed articles that ran into the paper folds, "Who am I to judge?"
She had skeletons in her closet too, her hands were never clean to begin with.
"Besides, I'm sure the consequences would bite you in the ass if you did anything here."
Ooooh, lava. Traditional. Flashy. Easy cleanup.
"That's weird." And Ximena would know about weirdos, being a prime example of one herself. "Do you think he wants to sell it to you?" Yes, because that's the most logically conclusion to take from the other's words.
"Maybe his sub-genus is immune. Or a mutation?" She's suddenly more interested in the conversation, "Though I would also try to grow an immunity to garlic: how could you eat without it?"
There was a pause at the mention of selling a vampire child. Her brows furrowed together and she is not sure if it is from the buzz of the beer but the idea in question was starting to make sense. Then again her ex was not a family man so maybe he really was?
"Shit, you might be right."
Hearing that he may have some form of immunity had made her face wrinkle in disgust, "I gotta find a way to remove it."
"Maybe he could be part roach?" Her eyes stare down at the bottle, nails trying to peel away at the label, "Don't those little fuckers adapt really fast to changes?"
There was a pause.
"Vampire roaches sounds horrible."
They had never been in a pub before! They assumed it was like a tavern of some sorts. Maybe? They had no idea what to expect but that didn't stifle their excitement in any way!
" That sounds like a great plan! And really? Woah,..if you do physical labor I can offer you my antlers? When I shed them you could make tools out of them! "
They were definitely more sturdy than regular antlers! They were a divine being after all so anything that was part of them probably contained unlimited potential. At least that's what they have been told...
"...They're perfect for gardening or weapon making! Though...I'd rather have you make tools out of them. "
Hearing them offer their antlers had her brows arch. Lips pursed as she was trying to figure out a proper response that would not make the other feel upset.
Was it always common for Lucen to always offer parts of themselves to strangers? Catalina herself had only offered her own blood in exchange for ingredients but that was common practice in the older parts of the witching world.
"I already have tools to take care of the ranch and the animals." Catalina reassured with a half smile forming, "My horses are quite picky about what I use too. Especially Orti. She does not like other scents on me while I groom her."
Her expression is apologetic, but she learned from a long time ago to place her boundaries down. Especially when it came to potential gifts.

“Ah are you Catalina-San? Nana-sensei’s friend who found something mysterious? Ah I’m the temporary park guide so if there’s something mysterious it’s my job to search it out. Oh please call me Kaban despite the fact I’m a human.” Kaban gave Catalina a polite smile and introduced herself.
The little park guide didn’t know any of the details beyond that, but she was excited for whatever adventure might come from the other’s interest after all she was someone from the outside world and might be able to teach Kaban some fun things.
"Nice to meet you then, Kaban." Her tone was softer as she replied, assuming the girl before her was younger. At the mention of finding something mysterious, her expression brightens in recognition. She carefully reaches into her pocket to remove the compass she had. It was going wild earlier. So she was surprised to see it not spinning so wildly and reading as normal.
"You are correct, I was doing the usual documenting of the flowers in the park." She begins to explain while idly pointing around the general area she had her strange encounter, "But there's a patch of ground that acts really weird. "
"My compass flips on its magnetic pull when I reach it. Not sure why, but might be something worth looking into?"
"It's no biggie, my job has always been to educate people!" Not necessarily about harpies, but she kind of had the advantage there, anyway. "But yeah, it'd be nice to be more aerodynamic, but it's not the end of the world."
"Technically, I CAN fly in rain, but prolonged exposure to water is just bad for our feathers in general. Being wet feels weird, too. I just try to avoid it as much as possible when I can."
"Oh I'm glad I'm not being much of a bother!" Laughs the witch. Things like this were always fascinating to her anyways so it was a delight to learn so much.
"That's understandable." She remembered when she would be out on the ranch during rainy days. Walking back home covered in mud and clothes stuck to her skin was fun when she was a kid, but as she got older it was just a bigger hassle.
"I was also curious about this..." How does one word this properly?
"Do you...trim your feathers for your clothes?" The woman arches her brow as she is trying to figure this out, "Oh is it like human hair, where you don't feel it until someone points it out?"
Their tail began to wag even more at the mention of food! Not only were they quite hungry but also...eating with someone else was always more fun! It gave them a sense of normalcy and such moments had to be treasured! Especially with their lifestyle...
" Of course I can! What are we going to eat? Food is amazing! I mean...some dishes are fascinating! I am amazed with what people can come up with! " They had mostly been eating berries and other more survival based dishes...thus regular food was already amazing to them! They could afford it and yet mostly chose to not get any...After all, someone could need it more!
Seeing that food was the right choice to offer, her posture visibly relaxes. Now that was all settled in ready to go, their next obstacle was to tackle what would be on the menu. While she was not much familiar with this particular location, what she did know is that food was quick to find anywhere.
"We could probably head to the local pub and see what they got?" Questions Catalina with a hopeful tone.
"I am usually a fan of protein packed meals." Her smile still remained, "But that's cause I do a lot of physical labor."
"I don't want to assume the same for you so this way we both get variety."
