"Maybe his sub-genus is immune. Or a mutation?" She's suddenly more interested in the conversation, "Though I would also try to grow an immunity to garlic: how could you eat without it?"

"He never saw anything he loved that he didn’t want to kick just to see if it still came back." Catalina has no idea how the topic of familiars popped up but she does take a big gulp of her beer. She might need three more bottles after this. (ximena uwu)

"Mm." She nods, strangely lucid and in the moment. Paying attention to the conversation (she blames the beer). "I have baby cousins like that." And plenty of friends, though the word friends is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

"Actually, I have an ex like that." Maybe. Her memory's always cloudy with these things. "Have you tried a collar and leash?"

There were few places left in the world where Carmen felt she could laugh with her mouth full or let her guard slip so easily between stories and shared glances. Fewer still where she wasn’t being watched, suspected, or asked for something (as in the case of her employees). But here, in Xochitl’s home, she wasn’t the Carmen Sandiego. She was just Carmen. A woman who sometimes over-salted her broth when distracted, who laughed too loudly and cursed too softly. Another face, rarely seen, of the same coin.

Coming here felt like stepping barefoot into memory. Not her own, perhaps, but someone else's…. “You know I’ll say yes,” she said, half-laughing. “But only if we bring back dessert after. Something sweet as a reward for our hard work.” She didn’t name the ache. Didn’t explain the kind of tired that settled deep in the joints. She didn’t have to. There would be time for that later, or maybe not. For now, there was the idea of a warm bowl of pozole. There was Xochitl.  There were garden shadows dancing across the ground as the sun filtered through. And there was Carmen, unarmored, for once. That was enough.

“You know HERE…” She glanced around, let her gaze linger on the wind-chime, the crooked herb pots, the candle wax clinging to old ceramic. “…Here, it feels like I could set the world down for a minute. Like I could forget what I do, who I’ve been. Just stir a pot with you, and remember what it’s like to be someone’s friend instead of somebody constantly on the run.”

Xóchitl listens, watching Carmen carefully. Lets her heart swell with love as she describes the safety of the space. Of what being around her makes her feel. In these moments, Xóchitl's not just México, but also herself. This strange faux human identity that's formed for better or for worse.

"I'll always be a safehouse for you." A little lighthouse in the middle of a storm, "For as long as you need. I mean it." Not that Carmen should retire, just that... Well, we all need to rest. "I have diplomatic immunity in several countries." She adds on, partly as a joke, partly as a reminder that no matter what, she's got her.

He was apathetic about the state of the lounge and was more focused on the mission at hand. While the seats were comfortable, Shota could find peace in any place that could be considered a seat. Hell, when at home Shota could even be found sleeping on the floor of his classroom. Sleeping in strange places could even be considered a special talent of his. He might have even fallen asleep that very moment if she hadn't spoken again.

Shota took a swallow at her question before he he leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on both knees, as if the position would help him recall the words that he needed. His brow was knit in thought before he gave her a shake of shaggy black hair. "N-no tengo ci-ta," he tried to confirm.

"I don't need an appointment either or help in a physical sense. But I was told that if I was looking for some help, that this would be the place to go. I'm looking for someone specifically; a woman that goes by the name 'Inés'. "

Well it's good he didn't decide to lay on the floor, she would have poked at him with a broom.

The corner of his lips raises slightly, although it's fleeting. He feels he gets by just fine out in the field, but he's been told by others that, well — he would think that, wouldn't he ? He is displeased about having to cut his excursion short, but all of this still seems a bit... unnecessary. It's just a wound.

" Incompetent rulers only ever cause problems, " he agrees. " So I suppose you've had plenty of experience, as a result. "

He has had experience with that himself, although the West's current Queen is competent enough. There is little worse than being forced under the thumb of someone who has no idea how to lead.

" And you've been a medic since then ? " He's not sure why he's asking, exactly. Curiosity is something he feels only occasionally, fleetingly, but it is a desire and so he's been encouraged to nurture it when it arises.

Even if they are competent, they usually cause problems. But now isn't the time to rant about Xóchitl's problem with authority.

She nods, "The silver lining in a situation like that, if you want to be stupidly positive." Which she would like to be! But cynicism is a disease and has rooted itself in her body for years. "But because of it, I've been a medic since I could competently sew a wound up, yes." Which would have been around age twelve, for her, if memory serves. Necessity is the mother of invention--Or something like that.

She warns him before she begins her first puncture, eyes focused and hands working smoothly. "You need to take care of shit like this better. Bacterium can enter your body and make you really sick."

Xochitl's words elicit a soft chuckle from Carmen, the sound like a breeze rustling through unfamiliar leaves. "You know me too well," she replied, her voice carrying a playful lilt that masked the deeper undercurrents beneath. "But what's friendship without some deeper conversation, existentialism is like an old dance partner--always waiting in the shadows for another turn around the floor. And though I may not have the years to match yours, I’ve danced with shadows long enough to know their steps."

Her gaze drifted to the garden, where Xochitl’s tomatoes thrived in the warm embrace of the earth. Still, thoughts lingered that Carmen could not push deep within. There was a hunger in her, for the soul to know her as it knew Xochitl, and vice versa. She had lived all her life a stranger to the land beneath her feet, still learning the language of the foreign soil. There was a past here, a story written in roots and stone, but one she had yet to remember.

Carmen’s smile returned, lighter now, as if shaking off the weight of her own thoughts. "But don’t worry. I’ll leave the deep dives to you, while I try to coax some secrets from this stubborn soil. Perhaps, one day, it’ll tell me what it’s been whispering to you all along. Meanwhile, you just enjoy some free labor--the only thing I ask is that we go out for some pozole."

Perhaps that is why she treasures Carmen so much (among other reasons), she just understands. An old soul, as the saying goes. Not that Xóchitl believes in reincarnation, at least not in the way most do, and certainly not in recent times.

"Oh? Go out? My pozole isn't good enough?" Le sigue la onda, shaking the weight of heavy thoughts, heavy moods. "I know a spot. You'll love it."

She wants to tell her friend I'll look for you, in these dives. I'll look for what you want to find. But the metaphor is too corny, even for her. Instead, Xóchitl tries for being more direct.

"Whatever it is you need... You always know, I'll help, right?"

She rolls her eyes, though there's a layer of some amusement (perhaps some reluctant endearment) towards the other--He's lucky he has more than half a brain cell, otherwise she'd be a lot meaner to him.
