The Holdovers (2023) dir. Alexander Payne
The holdovers (2023) is a Christmas movie for those that understand how inherently sad and yet joyful of a holiday Christmas is. It’s about being slammed with the memories of all those that are not with you to celebrate, the loneliness of having to one to celebrate with, and the impending end of another year to remind you what you haven’t done - it is also an opportunity to spend time with family and friends and to reach out to the people in your life and make those connections, and the beginning of a new year another chance to do all of those things you had been meaning to do.
“any heaven waiting for me would have you in it” “i’ll see you for the rest of my life” “in a better world” thank you we were liars for shattering my heart into a million pieces
"i don't think anyone ever really saw me" stop it. "i don't want to burn again" with the added gut punch of johnny being gay and the sinclars religious. STOP IT . GAT'S FUTURE DREAM. THE FUCKING DOGS. MIRREN'S ART GALLERY. "'You're a child'/'i'm YOUR child'" NOOO. MIRREN COULD HAVE JUMPED OUT THE WINDOW BUT SHE WENT BACK FOR JOHNNY AND CADENCE. GAT COULD HAVE STAYED IN THE BOAT BUT HE WENT IN FOR THE LIARS. THEY WERE SIXTEEN AND DRUNK AND ANGRY THEY DESERVED SO MUCH MORE
Devotion: profound dedication, loyalty, or love for a person, activity, or cause.
To love like a dog. To give everything and receive nothing but table scraps. To always want more.
sometimes i randomly remember how insane maggie stiefvater was for making ronan lynch—a man that can create reality—a man of god, when he himself is a god of a man. then to take this man and have him be not only in love with, but a literal soulmate of a man named adam. parrish. adam parrish. who, mind you, lives above ronan's very own place of worship. and is the namesake of the first of mankind that the bible says god made from the literal dust of the ground (adam parrish: comes from nothing, hair "dusty" in color) and appoints him to care for the garden of eden (adam parrish: sacrifices himself to ronan's sentient forest). then has adam viewing ronan as a god and ronan saying "maybe he dreamt (created)" adam???? like who just fucking writes that and goes about their life?
edit challenge vs. @wespers ♡ round four → favorite character from the raven cycle
In the end, he was nobody to Adam, he was nobody to Ronan. Adam spit his words back at him and Ronan squandered however many second chances he gave him. Gansey was just a guy with a lot of stuff and a hole inside him that chewed away more of his heart every year.
“While I'm gone," Gansey said, pausing, "dream me the world. Something new for every night.”
that was the world he lived in with ronan lynch. the world he had built with ronan lynch. a world of limitless emotions and limited power. a world of tilting green hillsides, purple mountains, agonizing crushes, euphoric grudges, gasoline nights, adventuring days, gravestones and ditches, kisses and orange juice, rain on skin, sun in eyes, easy pain, hard-won wonder.

obsessed with how many stories are just. ghost stories in essence. this one character that has never actually appeared in canon but has been haunting the narrative since day one. None of the bad things would have happened if it weren't for them. So many of the bad things happened to them. The story would not exist if they didn't exist, and yet, they've never once appeared in the present because they have been dead before the narrative even began.
no one cares but a character dying is not the same as a character haunting the narrative. dying is a plot point, while haunting must be structural redefinition of the entire piece's form. it's why haunting of hill house begins and ends with the same line. it's why cassandra tells the audience of the oresteia exactly what is going to happen. they are defined by their endings- something that not all deaths lead to
I love it when a the empty space left behind after a character departs is felt. When you can feel their presence in your bones like they never left as the memory of who they were haunts the rest of the characters. Their presence saturates every decision made and their spirit follows regardless of what steps have been taken forward away from the past they were a part of. No matter how the story or characters evolve, the weight and influence of who this person was will never abate. For better or for worse, good influence or evil, their memory will permeate the narrative.
"I believe in poems as I do in haunted houses. We say someone must have died here."
Rosa Alacia,"Voice:An essay, from My other tongue."

Forgive me, for all the things I did but mostly for the ones I did not
haunts me to this day since I read it five years ago because it’s always the things I didn’t do that lurk around my mind, all the hellos I never said or the sorrys I should have. Human existence I fear for me is always going to be about all the things I never did whether it be knowingly or unknowingly
