There is this warm person between the soft hums of bolsters and the fluttering eyelashes of laughter that Kieran’s been thinking about constantly. It is someone filled with delicate touches, and light colours, and sweet smells that wrap around him, constantly murmuring that this is exactly where he is supposed to be. It is delicate curls, creamy skin, and lips like freshly picked strawberries. Maisie. It’s no surprise that the gorgeous girl had been running through his mind non-stop since his love confession. Every time he thought about Maisie, he felt fuddled enough to feel the warmth spread through his limbs in a low buzzing roar, the disquietude slipping from his pores. He would find himself smiling mindlessly, the feeling of innate euphoria roaming through him every single time his mind wandered. It may seem a bit silly to anyone else but Kieran had never been this taken by someone before – and to be honest, he never thought this day would come. The very idea of going on a date with Maisie had his stomach in the most pleasant knots; he was excited to finally spend some quality time with the girl that had been on his mind for years.
Honestly, if you told Kieran a year ago that he would be going on a date with the girl of his dreams, he would have laughed in your face. Now though, Maisie is still the main occupant to his mind, almost like a more conscious subconscious. He poured himself a glass of water at the diner, and he poured Maisie a glass too, bought himself a bagel and he gets Maisie one too. He use to go through thrift shops looking for band t-shirts, but now it was for band shirts and the weird hipster sun trinkets Maisie was obsessed with. It was even down to the simplest of things, like when he needs to run out to the shop and get some milk, he would find himself picking up a box of snacks that Maisie liked so she could nibble on them the next time she visited him. It was the type of routine you want to never forget, one you want to live forever. And to be completely honest, his love for Maisie is the only reason he devoted so much of his energy into making sure this evening would be absolutely perfect. He had numerous ideas rummaging around inside his brain; there were dinner ideas, more dinner ideas, and mostly just dinner ideas – he’s a bit bored of those, though. There were movie ideas, with actor themes, or genre themes, but really, they spend most of their time watching Netflix together anyway. Board games – Kieran thought he might own monopoly, but he wasn’t going to risk their relationship this early. And besides, none of the ideas sounded romantic or sensual or good enough, really. So, he had to use his own imagination and while his idea is very… plain, he still liked to think it was a little romantic.
So, that is essentially how Kieran found himself gently placing a fuzzy blanket onto a patch of grass in the middle of a field. The late pinkish glow of the sunset casted an illumination upon everything he was setting up. It was so hazy – content and hazy and that is how Kieran felt today; mind dazed as he gently laid a couple sunflowers onto the blanket and in this moment, he doesn’t think there is any other word that could properly describe how he felt. In fact, if he could choose any moment in time to press pause on, it would be this one. Where it’s all soft edges and scented candles. Content, perfect. He doesn’t speak much as he adjusts everything around the blanket – he was far too nervous for words right now. In any other situation, Kieran would be loud and wild and probably wouldn’t even care about how everything looked but it was different when it comes to Maisie. It was just that Kieran is so fucking in love, he is, and Maisie has him intoxicated on happiness like no other. The pretty girl made the world fuzzy and light and perfect, and Kieran just wanted to return the gesture somehow. He wanted to provide soft moments where they can just relax and kiss and love each other, so gently, like they’ve finally slowed the Earth’s spin simply by existing so close to one another.
The only way he knew how to do that was by providing a comfortable environment for the girl and the first thing on his list was a redo of their original night under the stars. Now, instead of screaming matches on the beach, the memory would be replaced with gentle touches and warm laughter. There was a silver tray nearby that contained homemade sandwiches and another one that had chocolate covered strawberries. There was a rather expensive bottle of wine (he even googled what wine worked best with chocolate) resting near the flowers. And his iPod was playing romantic piano music from his playlist called ‘Sunshine’. There were some pillows and some scented candles in little jars.. because why the fuck not? Everything was pretty and delicate, and Kieran hoped tonight would go as planned because Maisie truly deserved it.
And not only had he spent ages setting everything up, he also took hours getting ready. Kieran had spent the majority of his day trying to dress himself and failing miserably. It seemed that nothing looked good on him and he knew it was probably him just being picky but who could blame him? This was the first date he had been on in a while – the last date he went to was an absolute disaster and he pretty much swore off them after that. But he willing to make an exception for Maisie – was willing to do anything for her, really. And eventually, after tossing shirt after shirt on his bed, Kieran had finally settled on an outfit. So, here he was, clad in his usual tight black jeans, a yellow dip shirt, and the most comfortable shoes. His eyes flickered towards the ground as he picked at his shirt (he only wore this one because it smelled of green apples and strawberries and the scent absolutely did not remind him of a certain girl) and he wondered if he was a little underdressed because it was not like he knew what Maisie planned on wearing. But he figured he was okay considering he was the one who knew what they would actually be doing today. Kieran had kept their little adventure a secret, despite Maisie’s protests because he wanted to sweep the girl off her feet. He had waited years for this moment; jotted down billions of date ideas into a little black journal as he yearned for this day to arrive. So yes, he was going to make this the most magical and cheesy date to ever exist and he was going to enjoy every minute of it.
Once Kieran was absolutely sure everything looked perfect (including himself), he pulled out his phone and sent Maisie a text: can’t wait to see you xx. A soft, excited giggle escaped his lips as he tucked his phone back into his pocket. He hoped Maisie would be quick to arrive because he was not sure he can spend another second waiting around. So, with butterflies fluttering around inside his stomach, Kieran picked up a single sunflower and settled down onto the blanket, waiting for his date to arrive.
