Rosalie looks gorgeous here.
make me choose » robstenx asked: Jasper Hale or Rosalie Hale
Most modern?
Rank the Cullens from the most modern (talks the most modern, most interest in modern music/fads) to the most “old fashioned” (speaks like they are from a different time, carries themselves like they are from a different time, dresses that way, etc) Who do you think is the most modern? Who do you think is the most old fashioned? Is it related to age (the oldest vamps are the most old fashioned) or is it more about attitude/personality?
They all play their parts. It’s not like they wear clothes from their eras. With their extremely quick minds, they can alter their speech patterns before blowing their cover when they have to speak with humans.
Alice, Em, Rose most modern and “with it.”
Alice delights in it. She has no memories of early 20th century Mississippi. She only knows what she’s seen of it in photos, books, and TV shows. She’s always looking forward.
Rosalie was the “it” girl of her time. It was reinforced and deeply ingrained in her. I think that would carry over. Had she married Royce and had those beautiful babies she wanted, she TOTES would have been the Hostess with the Mostest. She’d have been a leader in her community with the charities, ladies’ clubs, and stuff. She’d have run the place.
Emmett—modern because it would be fun. He was an “adult” of his time, but he was a good ol’ boy. The country boy Force is strong with that one. Going to high school keeps them up with what’s in, what’s now, what’s happenin’. He’d have fun with whatever era he’s a part of, he’d pick up the slang and he’d use it. Depending on where he was.
Carlisle, Esme, Jasper least modern.
They wear current fashions, but I think they would be more like their human selves because of what they were in their human lives. They were all adults, living as adults. Carlisle was probably never a little boy playing in the streets with the other kids. Esme rebelled against her parents, but not too hard, then she was stuck with an asshole husband. That would have calmed her ass right down. Then she lost her baby. Stuff like that ages you. Maybe not in the physical sense, but emotionally.
It would be the same with Jasper. He was in the War, leading men. He could goof off a little bit, but his position would have kept him from breaking loose with the other fellas. He had a reputation he had to maintain. Then Maria got him.
But, I could see him cutting loose with Emmett. He is a 19 or 20 year old fella.
Edward’s caught in the middle. He was probably always a stuffy old man. Being an only child and financially privileged, I think he would have been a more serious child, yet a sheltered one. His father would have expected it of him. He would be very aware of modern idiom, but he was very staid and stuck in his ways. Parochial.
Obviously.
I don’t care how much Bella and Nessie may have *changed* him, I just can’t see Edward going around saying, “S’up, dude? Yo.” And shit …
It’s almost divided by how old they are as vampires, but I think it would have more to do with their basic personalities and what they were when they were human.
Favorite movies?
What might the favorite movies of the various Twilight characters be? If you can’t narrow it down to a specific movie, what genre(s) do you think they like? Do you think vampires other than the Cullens watch movies or are aware of pop culture much at all? Do they screen films in Volterra? Do nomads sneak into movie theatres?
I think Emmett would like the Disney movies. At the same time, I think he'd love action movies and slasher flicks.
Alice would like rom-coms. And the tear jerkers like The Notebook or Titanic.
Jasper would enjoy documentaries, even if he does complain about how wrong they are.
I think Rosalie likes to watch action movies with Emmett, but pretends not to. I don't think she'd enjoy rom-coms or tear jerkers; she's already got her hubby and doesn't like watching fake romance. I think Carlisle just enjoys watching TV with whoever and is mostly impartial.
Esme and Edward would enjoy the silent movies.
Eddie has a secret stash of Elvis movies that he watches when no one's home.
"I can’t always be Lois Lane," I insisted. "I want to be Superman, too." - Twilight "I may not die now… but I’m going to die sometime. Every minute of the day, I get closer. And I’m going to get old." - Twilight "Mostly I dream about being with you forever." - Twilight I couldn’t really see...
I bet the others would finally let Edward play with them if Bella uses her shield to prevent him from cheating by reading minds lol
lol and then Edward loses every game because he’s not used to playing without that advantage. I feel like Jasper and Carlisle could both demolish Edward at chess without the mind-reading factor. Edward’s very intelligent but he’s got an artist’s brain for the most part—his genius is music, you know? Jasper’s a strategist and Carlisle’s a scientist, both much more logical, analytical ways of thinking. Honestly wouldn’t Alice be the bigger problem? Alice sees your move once you decide it so she can do what Edward does basically, plus games of chance aren’t really chances with her; I mean if she can predict the weather and the stock market, a hand of cards or a roll of the dice should be small potatoes.
Pfffft! Edward hasn’t learned how to lose. He wouldn’t win any games and the poor thing would be flipping tables and flouncing off.
I feel like Edward has a bunch of little hobbies to get through his emotional breakdowns. One time it’s scrapbooking, the other it’s crochet and knitting, the next it’s making greeting cards…
omfg so my little cousin (she’s 8) loves superheroes and we were in party city and she was browsing through the boys costumes because the girls side didn’t have the ones she wanted and then an employee tells her that she’s in the wrong side so she grabs a batman mask and says in the lowest voice possible for her age, “don’t question batman”
THIS GIRL IS MY ROLE MODEL
She's okay for a human.
Might not eat that.
How much better would it have been if Carlisle (or even any other of the Cullens) talked Edward out of committing suicide in NM? I know Bella is our "heroine" and for her to save Edward is supposed to be romantic, but it doesn't solve anything. Edward's world still revolves around her, he still thinks he has nothing else to live for, so next time Bella dies he'll go back to the suicide attempt. I'd have loved to see Bella not make it into Volterra in time, desperately searching for him thinking
she was too late, just to find him with Carlisle, having an honest “father-son” conversation and Carlisle showing him another perspective so Edward can change his mind. That could have been sweet! (I still don’t see why Carlisle couldn’t have just called Aro and been like: “My son is going to show up and beg for death, can you just hold him there until I can come and get him? There’s been a huge misunderstanding. Thank you, friend. I will be there in 14 hours.” Less dramatic that way, I guess? lol)I just wish the mental health angle that been addressed here. Both Carlisle and Esme had attempted suicide before and it could have been a good opportunity to revisit that and maybe even have Esme tell more about her back story, but all that happens in the aftermath is Esme saying to Edward: “never do that to me again!” or whatever and he sheepishly says “Sorry, Mom” and that’s the end of it. That’s the end of the discussion. I think the “sorry, Mom” is the closest Edward gives to an apology to his family for putting them through all this (and exposing all their secrets to Aro which no one ever calls him out on ever). There’s no talk about why he did it, why he jumped to the conclusions he did, why he didn’t even TRY to live (it’s not like he tried to carry on without Bella but the pain was too much, he didn’t even consider carrying on without her), why he didn’t say goodbye, why he exposed them all to Aro, etc. And Bella was you know, HEARING VOICES and intentionally putting herself in danger but it’s like “well the symptoms are gone because Edward is back” but you’d think that in a family with three medically-trained members and a few who have unique insights into the human mind/emotions they would have been a little more concerned about the behavior? Like you said, E/B being reunited doesn’t solve the deeper issues that led them to this behavior in the first place. It could have been cool to have seen that explored a bit more and a great way to maybe address mental health and take some of the stigma away from it.
As far as Carlisle goes, I saw a theory that he was named after his mother's maiden name which I think was a fairly common trend in the past. I also like this theory coupled with Carlisle being his middle name that he prefers to be called by, and his first name being William after his father. So I guess SM's weird naming choices can be explained if you squint hard enough
I’ve seen the middle name one around, but I from what I’ve read, they were so uncommon in that era that him having a middle name is almost weirder than his name being Carlisle in the first place.
"Middle names among English-speakers were essentially nonexistent until the mid-1600s, remained quite rare for another century or so, and did not become common until well after the American Revolution."I mean, it’s possible he had a middle name. He was born in the mid-1660s, so while it would be “quite rare,” it’s possible. But since SM doesn’t mention it in the guide or the books (as compared to say, Alice being Mary Alice but going by Alice) I tend to think Carlisle is his first/only name. The mother’s maiden name theory makes sense. I sort of have my own offshoot of that, that maybe a relative of his mother’s was Bishop of Carlisle and that’s where he got the name. Barnaby Potter, 1577-1642, was Bishop of Carlisle from 1628/9 until his death in 1642. He had a bunch of daughters who would be JUST the right age to be Carlisle’s mother (Mary, Elizabeth, Dorothy, Grace and Amye, born between 1616-1625 could have easily had a son in the 1640s). Not only that, but the whole Potter family was filled with extremely well-educated, well-respected people. Barnaby’s nephew, Christopher Potter “was a person esteemed by all that knew him to be learned and religious, exemplary in his behavior and discourse, courteous in his carriage, and of a sweet and obliging nature, and comely presence.”I mean, who does that sound like? I like to imagine that Carlisle’s tragedy is that he would have been understood and appreciated in his mother’s family had she lived, but his father found him a disappointment.
But I don’t have any more canon justification for that than the middle name or mother’s maiden name people do. None of the Cullens’ parents (other than Edward’s) were given names by SM, so even if Carlisle were named after his father or his mother we don’t know what their names were. The beauty part is that none of this ‘fanon’ can be right or wrong, since SM didn’t specify. Freedom!
I think sooner or later Bella will find the personal interests and goals she didn't give much thought about in her human life. All the other Cullens have one or two things they are passionate about and careers they've studied, and I don't think Bella will be the exception. Once Renesmee is grown and Bella is fully adjusted to vampire life, gazing into Edward's eyes for the rest of eternity won't be enough to keep her from dying of boredom. What do you see her doing in terms of hobbies or career?
It’s really hard to say since she doesn’t seem to have any inclination to do much of anything in the books. She likes to read—but she mostly seems to read the same things over and over again, which isn’t going to fly as a vampire since they have perfect recall—once she’s read a book as a vampire once, she’ll remember every word perfectly. I don’t see how she’d get any pleasure out of re-reading it. SM has said that Bella’s plan before the whole falling-in-love-with-a-vampire thing was to be a teacher, because it was the one thing about Renee that she respected/looked up to. But Bella wanted to teach literature at a high school or college level. Considering she’s frozen forever at 18/19, that’s going to be kind of difficult. She might be able to fudge being a recent grad at “22” and teach but she couldn’t go more than a few years before it was obvious she wasn’t aging—I mean 18-year-old Rosalie, 19-year-old Jasper & Alice, and 20-year-old Emmett were posing as high school students… how is Bella supposed to pose as a high school teacher/college professor? I’ve seen fanfic where vampire!Bella is a doctor, but I can’t see that happening. Even IF she has the control for it (and I don’t buy that she does. Not eating her human father is not the same thing as being around bleeding strangers), and IF she could pass as old enough (which I don’t think she could at 18/19), I don’t think she has the personality for it. She was grossed out by blood as a human, after all. She doesn’t have the interest or the drive and frankly I don’t think she cares about people in the abstract that much—she cares deeply about people she knows and loves, but she doesn’t strike me as the type to want to serve humanity in general. Most of us aren’t. I sort of think she’s going to be disillusioned after a few years when the newness and excitement wears off and the monotony sets in. I kind of do hope she has to sit through high school a few times just so she appreciates what it’s like. I guess she could eventually teach? Maybe online courses so it wouldn’t be as obvious how young she is? I could also see her maybe getting into writing—she could be a ghostwriter for some other author, or write under a bunch of different pen names, or be one of those reclusive author types who never do interviews or book tours.
re: baby!fic
If you are going to write a story where all the Cullen couples get magic babies, please let Esme have one too. So often I see these stories where E/B, Em/R and A/J all have like 3-4 kids but Carlisle and Esme don’t because “They already have children.” They don’t. Not really. It’s not about adoption. Adoption is 100% valid. But they ‘adopted’ their children when they were 17, 18, 20 and 19/50 and 19/110 (since Alice and Jasper didn’t join the family as newborns like Ed, Rose and Em, they were actually much older than their appearance by the time they found the Cullens) respectively. Their ‘children’ were already grown up when they came into their lives. Esme never held Edward as baby. They never took pictures of Alice dressed up for the first day of school. Carlisle never helped Jasper with his homework and they never cheered for Emmett and Rosalie at their little league games. They didn’t potty train them or teach them to walk and talk, they didn’t teach them about the world and right and wrong. Someone else had already done all this stuff by the time their ‘children’ came into their lives. They are ‘parents’ who have never really had the chance to be parents. They provide moral support and guidance and love, but their ‘kids’ are married adults, they don’t need a mommy and daddy.
And this is why C/E as ‘grandparents’ to Renesmee is so weird to me. They’ve never been parents! They can’t give Edward advice about raising a kid because they’ve never raised one. Esme had her baby for three days; Carlisle never had a child at all. They have no actual experience raising children—they have some experience with eternal teenagers/young adults, but that’s a totally different thing. They can’t say, “oh, she’s just like you were when you were a child” because they have NO IDEA what Edward was like as a kid. I get so weirded out in fics where C/E refer to the kids as like “our baby girl” or “our little soldier.” They wouldn’t think of them that way because they never knew them as children at all. Jasper was a fully-grown 100+-year-old vampire when they met him. They aren’t going to conceive of him as a little boy. They simply don’t have those experiences/memories. So, as much as I’m not a fan of the magic baby genre, if you’re going to go there, please let C/E have a kid too. Adopting fully grown vampires does not make up for being unable to have children. Esme is “making do” with them as ‘substitutes’ but she knows it’s not the real thing.
why doesn't anyone ever question bella about the bite mark on her wrist, from james, when she was human?
You’d think someone would notice that. Especially someone whose job it is to be observant like, I don’t know, a police chief? I like that Jacob had a moment in New Moon where he noticed it. I don’t know how they explained that particular injury when she was in the hospital in Phoenix either. Teeth marks are pretty obvious, and that cover story about falling down a flight of stairs and out a window or whatever it was would not explain bite marks.I really, really wish SM hadn’t made Charlie so clueless. I think him being suspicious and investigating the Cullens could have created some awesome tension.
There's a summer separating Twilight and New Moon. Charlie could have asked during that time. Charlie could have asked sometime between Bella's return from Phoenix and Prom. The Cullens most likely gave her an excuse that was believable. Carlisle was a doctor after all. Wish we knew what it was. Wish SM thought about ideas like that. A more detailed story would have been so much better.
