okay but do you know what the best part about bellarke is?
They really are genuinely each other’s best friend. You can see it in every scene together, that they rely on and respect each other in everything they do, even if they might not always agree. They call each other on their shit and they’re not afraid to piss each other off, but at the end of the day, they value the other’s opinion and they work to balance each other out.
And before they came to the ground, Clarke had Wells, so she understands what it means to be a friend. But Bellamy? This is entirely new territory.
Back on the Ark, Bellamy couldn’t trust anyone. He couldn’t get close to the kids at school, couldn’t talk to them about his life, couldn’t bring them home after school. He had to protect Octavia. Twenty-three years old, and the kid has never in his life had a best friend.
And then, suddenly, there’s this girl.
This nosey ass, stubborn, smart as hell, beautiful girl who just shows up in his life and tells him he’s not on his own anymore. She doesn’t treat him like a lowly janitor like he expects the “princess” to do. She treats him as her equal, as someone she shouldn’t overlook, even if at first it might not be in a positive way.
She doesn’t swoop in and try to steal the authority he has won with the Hundred. Instead, she works with him, appreciates the skills and strengths he brings to the table and balances them with her own. Though he knows she’s more than capable of holding her own, she respects him. She needs him. And he realizes that for once in his life, he doesn’t have to do it alone.
And when Clarke is taken to Mount Weather, the first thing she asks when she’s reunited with the rest of the Hundred is, “Finn and Bellamy?” She asks about Finn because of their romantic involvement, sure. But Bellamy? We know that Sterling and Monroe were also missing after the end of the Season 1 finale, but that’s not her priority at the moment. She asks about Bellamy, her friend, her partner. Because he has to be alive. He has to be.
And when they see each other again, you get this massive embrace, and you can just feel their respect for each other, their relief that the other is still alive, still there to share the weight of leadership together. In this scene, even if they’re not in love with each other yet, you can definitely see that they do love each other, in whatever way that may be.
Throughout the next few seasons, we see so many explicit and implicit examples of how much Clarke and Bellamy need each other. Both admit that they can’t lose the other. The parallel in 2x09 shows just how much Bellamy would do to protect her, and Clarke’s willingness to sacrifice TonDC to protect him in 2x12 show she’d do every bit of the same.
The best part about Bellarke is that even before they fell in love, they knew each other. They trusted each other. The respected each other.
