Roll up, ROLL UP! Were back with our handmade markets featuring the very best of Brighton and beyonds creative peeps. Our LAST date is December 6th, 11-5pm, at Brighton Unitarian Church on New Road. 

As usual we have a fabulous mix of brand new faces and regular favourites selling a vast range of arts and crafts including original artwork, homewares, photography, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, fashion, glass and an amazing cafe serving light lunches, lovely homemade cakes and tea’s and coffees.

So if your looking for something special and unusual for a present, a birthday, or just a treat for yourself, we have some fantastic affordable and unique gifts you certainly will not find on the High street! Is it too early for the C word?! Yes Christmas is coming up so if your shopping early this year come and browse some amazing unique products. Support local businesses this year. We have some top quality artists selling their wares and the best thing is you get to meet the person who has designed and made what you are buying. there is a story, creative magic and inspiration behind each product.



Don’t forget we are also Dog Friendly, even in the cafe, just keep your pooch on a lead so he doesn’t steal the sausage rolls!!!

LH Design -  LH Design is a small, one person business run by Lola Hoad, a graphic designer based in Brighton, UK. Lola creates hand lettered contemporary paper goods, ranging from prints to greeting cards, that feature lovely expressions and quotes. 

Adam Regester - Market fav Adam is a talented illustrator who is inspired by local and iconic architecture, animals and things he finds around himself in everyday life, breaking down the images to simple almost naive sketch work with bold block colour accents to produce graphic and commercially viable images which work well on a variety of surfaces producing a variety of original art pieces and affordable gifts and accessories, as well as working on bespoke commissions.

Hania Jewellery - Gorgeous delicate sterling silver and karat gold jewellery made by Hania, featuring geometric shapes and lines that are so simple yet so striking at the same time. Timeless and contemporary all at the same time. 

Gabrielle Vary - Designer Gabrielle spins traditional hand-made design techniques with modern, fresh ideas, specialising in knitwear with a particular focus on fashion and interior accessories. Her colour combinations are stunning. 

  Dinah & Co - Market regular and fav’ Dinah Dufton creates a vast range of spectacular creative pieces, including, art, stationary, jewellery, body stickers and tattoos and gifts. Her new raw diamond pieces, cocoon and pebble jewellery are simply stunning. 

YUK FUN - Yuk FUN is a brand new clothing label based in sunny Portslade-by-Sea. Find bright colourful clothing designed by Lucy Cheung and Patrick Gildersleeves.

Cat Brown - Talented ceramic artist Cat makes beautiful decorative and functional pieces for the home and garden inspired by nature. She creates her organic work by just working with her hands, a few tools and very little else but the earth and some water to create her distinct and covetable pieces.

Mica Peet - Mica is an illustrator and all round creator of lovely things including illustrations, jewellery, phone cases and pocket mirrors. Her design philosophy consists of juxtaposing her love of the beautiful natural world with an edgier, modern and idiosyncratic design aesthetic. 

  Nina Stemson - Nina runs Skinny Scarves, which features colourful knitware fashion and accessories. Each item is made with care from high quality yarns, Nina currently uses British and Italian yarns sourced from UK suppliers. As well as scarves find hot water bottle covers, wrist warmers, headbands and mug-hugs. 

Chanchala - Stunning steampunk inspired jewellery Most of her pieces incorporate found objects which are old and unwanted. Her line of jewellery began with a pile of old watch and clock parts which got caught in the 2004 Tsunami, courtesy of her Dad who owns a shop in southern Sri Lanka which was badly damaged. There is so much joy in turning such a tragedy into beautiful pieces of history. You can also find her beautiful new clocks which follow her distinct style.

English Handmade Soap - Faith McCartney is the brains behind English Handmade Soap, which produces handmade high quality glycerine soaps which are both decorative and practical. English Handmade Soap draws on the 1950’s patterns and colour palettes for design inspiration and comes in delightful scents like rose, lemongrass and lavender.

David Bennett - David creates funky linoprints and illustrations with a cartoony edge. With a background in animation you can see how this translates easily and seamlessly into his current artwork. David will be exhibiting prints and cards of his designs.

Sarah Meredith - Sarah likes to make fun quirky pieces of jewellery to make you smile! Her work is created using many different materials including precious metals and laser cut plastic and wood, making her designs available to everyone whatever your budget. 

Sarah Edmonds - Sarah’s work is inspired by nature, unusual characters and stories. She produces screen prints, paper cuts, gouache paintings and line illustrations as well as working digitally. Sarah is inspired by Scandinavian design, and in the summer of 2013 worked as an artist in residence for Kultivera in Tranås, Sweden. 

Sharifa Brooks Read - Sharifa is a Brighton trained painter and printmaker, whose work has a strong and recognisable form and reflects her training in Graphic Design and Illustration. She will be exhibiting a range of screen and lino prints, as well as some hand printed kitchen textiles. She had a sale on last time on old work, so grab a bargain! 

Miss Jones Draws - Anna Jones runs Miss Jones Draws. Originally from Anglesey in North Wales, Anna now lives in sunny Brighton and creates stunning illustrations. She graduated with a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Graphic Arts from Liverpool Art School and has since worked as an in-house illustrator/designer for a greeting card company before becoming a freelance illustrator in 2008. 

Betty Shek - the one and only Betty Shek returns with her jewellery and artwork. She always loves to create with vintage & new materials, so most of the components she uses for her designs have been carefully sourced or recycled. Her button and found object jewellery made from her vast ever growing hoard is always a popular choice, as is her delicate intricate embroideries which can be found as brooches or artwork.

Lily Lou - Another market regular Linda Ayres produces eyecatching bold statement jewellery made with recycled and vintage costume jewellery that is sure to turn heads! Many of her pieces feature some serious bling perfect for the xmas party season! 

Remnant Black - Catrin Dudfield is a textile artist creating unique pieces including, brooches, rosettes, cushions, cards, framable art, hangings and decorated vintage china. She has a huge interest in anatomy and a dark sense of humour and this influences her work.

Jessica Parkes - Jessica creates stunning stained glass items for your home, including small items perfect for hanging by a window or big dramatic statement pieces. 

Corinne Taylor - Corinne is a holistic therapist based in Ovingdean, Brighton, and has designed a range of treatments and organic handmade products, aiming to help you achieve optimum health and balance in your life. 

Imogen George Jewellery - Mandie Bailey designs and makes all her jewellery in her workshop in South London. Apart from a basic silversmithing course, Mandie is a self taught jeweller. Working primarily with sterling silver her main style is cutting organic shapes from silver by hand. 

Troy Ohlson - Local scenes inspired by nature, Troys work is about atmosphere, feeling and colour. As both a Painter and a Printmaker, Troy blurs the boundaries between the two, mixing media within each image; often adding collage, watercolour, acrylic, and pen & ink to her paintings, etchings and collagraphs. 

Shabby Pop Prints - The fab Christian Howard of Shabby Pop Prints creates images of the British south coast with a modern twist! His popular images are inspired by the beautiful Sussex coast and its shabby decaying piers, magical sunsets and romantic beaches. He carefully prints his images directly onto wood and stone making them into durable and funky art pieces.

Octopus Art - Liz Ikamba creates fun and quirky mini worlds using cowboy and indian figurines, found objects and refuse material. The figures bring up a strong sense of childhood nostalgia, and in their newly created environments they evoke provocative narratives that are poised somewhere between the playful and naive world of childlike imagination, and the dark, violent and often aggressive recesses of the mind. 

Linescapes - Amalia Sanchez de la Blanca specialises in designing simple and elegant products which display a connectivity between all aspects of her artwork with her love of interiors and graphic design. Her new architecture images are simply stunning, as well as her beautiful new handbound notebooks. 

Fen & Co - Ria Wilson runs Fen & Co, named after her lovely Schipperke dog! Ria creates beautiful jewellery inspired by nature and her love of being outdoors, she is currently training in gardening at a historic estate, surrounded by ancient woodland and Gothic architecture, and you can see how this echoes through her pieces.

Vicky Ramsey - Vicky is a London born Artist and Illustrator currently living in Brighton, U.K. Her background is Fine Art, she completed a BA (Hons) at Nottingham Trent University, specialising in Painting and has since diversified to Printmaking and Illustration. You will find fabulous humorous prints, cards, tshirts and bags!

Betty Shek - the one and only Betty Shek returns with her jewellery and artwork. She always loves to create with vintage & new materials, so most of the components she uses for her designs have been carefully sourced or recycled. Her button and found object jewellery made from her vast ever growing hoard is always a popular choice, as is her delicate intricate embroideries which can be found as brooches or artwork.

Abstract Organics - Sarah Oyetunde creates evocative small original paintings, printed cards of original paintings, polymer clay wearable art, winter/christmas themes paintings, cards and jewellery.

Karen Rao - Karen Rao makes super funky contemporary felt wares, including original artwork, cards, fashion and gifts. One of her popular ranges are her unusual animal inspired hats, and she even has a celebrity fan in Holywood, Kat Von D! Loving her new winter felted hat range too, these bad boys will keep your head super warm! 

Crowns From Ashes - Natalie Millerchip creates beautifully handmade jewellery recycled  from materials such as crisp packets, plastic bags and used comics. Products consist of colourful flower brooches, shining crisp earrings and curvy paper earrings and necklaces. Natalie has a great eye for colour and is excited by the energy and vibrancy of bright hues and shades. 

Helen Shaw - Helen Shaw creates pretty sterling silver jewellery set with bold eye catching stones, delicate faceted crystals or mixed metal juxtapositions. All jewellery is handmade in sterling silver by Helen in the UK and is guaranteed for life. With a strong bohemian theme going on throughout her work, her pieces are timeless investments to wear now and forever.

Kate Troup - Kate divides her time between Spain and Hove. Her ceramics are unique, beautiful & fun and include decorative and functional household pieces.  

Caleigh Illerbrun - Caleigh Illerbrun is an illustrator who grew up in a northwestern canadian valley of lakes, forests and fields. Her surreal but beautiful work reflects her background and the creative way she views the world. Find prints, homewares, accessories and original hand painted owl themed "russian dolls".

Lubilou - Lisa Gyalog makes fabulous and detailed handmade ceramic sheep, rabbits and chickens all with their own personal backstory! Lisa also makes beautiful textural decorations and homewares, including tiles, plates, coasters and also a selection of brooches, all in her signature style using washed out undersaturated dreamy colours. 

Stoats and Weasels - Lisa Bamford runs Stoats & Weasels, a Brighton based graphic design company with an enduring love for all things silly. In Lisa’s spare time she likes to keep her inner child very much alive by creating quirky designs for badges, magnets, greetings cards, books and prints.

One Off - Laura Cole designs bags and cushions which are made by in her Brighton ‘studio’ - her shed in the garden. A very nice shed though! She is inspired by materials and loves making useful products out of excellent-quality recycled suits and knitwear and only uses natural fibres like wool, linen and cotton.

Hannah May Chapman - Hannah creates mixed media Contemporary Art Jewellery & Accessories designed and made to entertain and amuse. She likes to create peculiar, exciting and vividly colourful sculptures that humorously emerge from the body, somehow conforming to the subject of jewellery.

Liz Toole - Local artist Liz Toole creates popular iconic lino prints, screen prints and some originals all based around her love of nature and birds. Liz originally trained as a ceramic artist before turning to her sketchbook when travelling in Africa.  She believes this is what re-introduced her to nature, as she witnessed the most beautiful and extreme flora and fauna, which is still highly important in her work.

Makers Boutique Winter Exhibition at BFQ 2014

We are returning to our favourite seafront location... Brighton Fishing Quarter Gallery, for the last exhibition this year, from 1st November until the 14th December. 

You will find lots of amazing handmade work on offer all made by local artists, perfect for Christmas Shopping. There will be an eclectic mix of contemporary and affordable arts and crafts on display, including original artwork, prints, cards, photography, ceramics, glass wear, jewellery, fashion and textiles. Support local small businesses this Christmas and give a gift you won't find on the High Street!

We will be open Friday 11-4pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10-5pm.

You can find us slap bang on Brighton Seafront in the Fisherman’s Quarter, which is on Kings Road Arches. If you are looking at the sea we are a short 5 minutes walk to the right of the Palace Pier. Lookout for the big boats outside!

Suzie Lee Knitware - Suzie designs and creates colourful knitted fashion, accessories and homewares, using beautiful soft yarn and a palette of undersaturated colours that are organic and earthy. Perfect for keeping you warm and toasty this winter! 

Kirsten Stride - Kirsten creates beautiful individually hand-drawn jewellery with a vintage sensibility. Her drawings come from bits and bobs she covets, especially her first collection which featured a series of British garden birds.

Paul Cox - Paul is an award winning sculptor. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools, London and has been a practising artist and sculptor since 1999. He creates stunning metal work pieces for the home and garden combined with wood and found materials. His garden stakes were hugely popular at the last exhibition.

Shelley Morrow - Local artist Shelley creates beautiful life drawings in her signature style using traditional illustration mediums, as well as drawings which are transformed into intricate stitched images.

Bangelibang - Lena Goodison is a talented designer who originated from Sweden and is now living in Brighton. She creates a gorgeous line of jewellery under her brand name, BangelibangDesign, the name is taken from the Indian ladies that have loads and loads of bangles…bangeling and making sounds when they move around!

Cissie Edna's Fancies - Jess Ortega-Parkin runs Cissie Edna’s Fancies, which features hand made jewellery and upcycled vintage purses and bags. Inspired by a fusion of 1960s popular culture, kitsch and cult movie classics. 

Woah There Pickle - Humorous artwork by Vicky Day of Woah There Pickle! Vicky creates artwork that is sure to make you smile, with her themes of work being inspired by generally silly bits and bobs, places I’ve been, nostalgia and iconic objects or designs. Vicky will be selling prints, cards and badges of her work.

Trynka - Back again is the lovely Victoria Lloyd of Trynka, a talented jeweller creating both bold clean-lined designs and subtle textured pieces. Take some silver, some geometric shapes, smoosh them together and the result is something both elegant and impactful. Unique, simple and striking shapes that you can wear season to season.

Naomi Frances - Naomi is a talented stained glass artist working with contemporary themes and original materials. Not constricted to just using glass in her work, found objects like shells, china, watches, and even old beer bottle lids find their way into her work to create unusual special pieces.

Betty Shek - the one and only Betty Shek returns with her jewellery and artwork. She always loves to create with vintage & new materials, so most of the components she uses for her designs have been carefully sourced or recycled. Her button and found object jewellery made from her vast ever growing hoard is always a popular choice, as is her delicate intricate embroideries which can be found as brooches or artwork.

Helen Lucas - Innovative ceramic artist Helen creates stoneware ceramics inspired by the rich textures and iconic symbols of the urban and natural landscapes of Sussex and Brighton. Expect to find quirky functional mugs, vases and dishes.

Dinah Dufton - Dinah Dufton creates a vast range of spectacular creative pieces, including art, stationary, jewellery, body stickers and tattoos and gifts. Her new pearl jewellery is stunning!

English Handmade Soap - Faith McCartney is the brains behind EHS, which produces handmade high quality glycerine soaps which are both decorative and practical. Treefrog Illustration - Jasmine Mercer from Treefrog Illustration returns with her quirky affordable illustrations, including a new sea inspired range shown here. She has illustrated many children’s books and her popular artwork which features people and animals has a delightful way of telling a story through the characters in them and their interactions with each other. Roll up, ROLL UP! Were back with our handmade markets featuring the very best of Brighton and beyonds creative peeps. Our sixth date is October 4th, 11-5pm at Brighton Unitarian Church on New Road. 

As usual we have a fabulous mix of brand new faces and regular favourites selling a vast range of arts and crafts including original artwork, homewares, photography, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, fashion, glass and an amazing cafe serving light lunches, lovely homemade cakes and tea’s and coffees.

 So if your looking for something special and unusual for a present, a birthday, or just a treat for yourself, we have some fantastic affordable and unique gifts you certainly will not find on the High street! Is it too early for the C word?! Yes Christmas is coming up so if your shopping early this year come and browse some amazing unique products. Support local businesses this year. Corinne Taylor - Corinne is a holistic therapist based in Ovingdean, Brighton, and has designed a range of treatments and organic handmade products, aiming to help you achieve optimum health and balance in your life. Very popular at our last market. 

Betty Shek - the one and only Betty Shek returns with her jewellery and artwork. She always loves to create with vintage & new materials, so most of the components she uses for her designs have been carefully sourced or recycled. Stoats and Weasels - Lisa Bamford runs Stoats & Weasels, a Brighton based graphic design company with an enduring love for all things silly. In Lisa's spare time she likes to keep her inner child very much alive by creating quirky designs for badges, magnets, greetings cards, books and prints.

Remnant Black - Catrin Dudfield is a textile artist creating unique pieces including, brooches, rosettes, cushions, cards, framable art, hangings and decorated vintage china. She has a huge interest in anatomy and a dark sense of humour and this influences her work.

Manic Minotaur - Scott Nellis is a University of Brighton illustration graduate who creates bright bold powerful pieces full of colour and imagination. He describes himself as a lone crusader on a quest to make your eyes happy!

  Adam Regester - Market fav Adam is a talented illustrator who is inspired by local and iconic architecture, animals and things he finds around himself in everyday life, breaking down the images to simple almost naive sketch work with bold block colour accents to produce graphic and commercially viable images which work well on a variety of surfaces producing a variety of original art pieces and affordable gifts and accessories. 

Lily Lou - Another market regular Linda Ayres produces eyecatching bold statement jewellery made with recycled and vintage costume jewellery that is sure to turn heads! Many of her pieces feature some serious bling and she also creates a gorgeous range of luxurious bags using upcycled materials too, as well as her new millinery range.

Shabby Pop Prints - The lovely Christian Howard of Shabby Pop Prints creates images of the British south coast with a modern twist! His popular images are inspired by the beautiful Sussex coast and its shabby decaying piers, magical sunsets and romantic beaches. He carefully prints his images directly onto wood and stone making them into durable and funky art pieces.

Troy Ohlson - Local scenes inspired by nature, Troys work is about atmosphere, feeling and colour. As both a Painter and a Printmaker, Troy blurs the boundaries between the two, mixing media within each image; often adding collage, watercolour, acrylic, and pen & ink to her paintings, etchings and collagraphs.

Interview with Katie Rewse

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

I am a freelance illustrator and designer living in Bournemouth. When I’m not working you will find me outdoors, or if I am lucky, in the sea.

Currently, I work across a few different platforms. Most recent commercial projects have included surfboard design, t-shirt graphics, wedding stationery and chalkboard writing. I also have my own range of prints and products, which I sell online, and in a few local galleries and shops.

How did you get into your art?

It wasn’t until graduating from an illustration degree that I decided I actually wanted to be an illustrator. It had always seemed a bit daunting but it was what I enjoyed, so I took the plunge. I’m glad I did.

Where do you work?

Since it’s been so nice lately I have got a lot of work done outside, at the beach, in the forest, in the garden… if I could work outdoors all of the time I would! When it’s not so nice, I have to settle for working from home.

  What are you inspired by?

Patterns in nature as well as patterns from all over the world, especially South Asia have always been a huge inspiration. I’ve got a collection of Indian fabrics as well as loads of beautiful remnants from Libertys.

My personal work tends to reflect the surf lifestyle, as well as my love for the ocean, traveling and adventures.

What do you love about being creative?

Being creative celebrates both giving and receiving. When you work together with a client to create something that they can be really stoked about, well that’s really rewarding… I think it’s the same with selling t-shirt graphics and surfboard art, if it makes someone happy, that’s pretty cool.

I also like the endless possibilities with working as an illustrator. At the moment I am enjoying being able to customize mass-produced products to offer something more unique.

What will you be bringing to the market?

I will be bringing along a selection of prints, as well as some greetings cards. My stall will also be filled with custom surf related products such as hand planes and surfboard fins.

Catrin Dudfield of Remnant Black

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

Remnant Black specialises in alternative embroidery inspired by anatomy, vintage medical books and Victoriana.

Illustrative textiles are created using layers of free machine embroidery and print with embellishment in silk velvet; mixed with a dark sense of humour and a vintage soft edge. I create many different products including Beguiling brooches, Cadaverous Cavities, Preposterous Plates and Unexpected Stitcheries.  I conceive artwork which explores anatomy and scientific subjects, mixed with a dark sense of humour and a vintage soft edge.

 My work is very unique and attracts people with varied backgrounds including medical, artistic, alternative and lovers of quirkiness.

How did Remnant Black start?

I have been very artistic from a small age, always drawing and inventing new ideas for things. My main passion as a teenager was costume, and I managed to get into London College of Fashion to study Costume for Performance. This gave me the best introduction into the world of costume construction and design, where I learnt tailoring, corsetry, print and dye, millinery, and pattern cutting. After I graduated I worked as a costume designer in fringe theatre and as a costume assistant to an international opera designer.

In 2012 I gave this up to look after my mum who was diagnosed with breast cancer. This gave me time to sit down and look into starting up my own business in creating my textiles in a subject that has always fascinated me. I have since completed many local fairs, getting some fantastic feedback. I hope to expand and come up to London again to get my products to a wider audience and hopefully find some stockists nationwide or even internationally.

Recently I won a local award in Hampshire to have free studio rent for a year to expand and explore new ideas. Most of my work is developed and made in this studio in Leigh Park, Havant, but I also still create and paint in my garden at home in Fareham.

What are you inspired by?

I do a lot of research through old medical anatomy book, first aid and ambulance books to gain inspiration. I love going up to London and visiting the Wellcome Collection and the Huntarian Museum, as these put on amazing exhibitions delving into the world of science crossing into art and how they inspired and develop each other. These museums also mean I can study anatomy up close, instead of illustrations in books. I also do a lot of research around the market place, seeing what other people are making and pricing their products at and also what is popular at the moment.

I draw and experiment with free machine embroidery, creating a lot of samples before I create certain products, other just appear from previous items. Like the peel and reveal idea, I layered images of the head to create a dissection of the human head anatomy.

What do you love about being creative?

What I love about being creative is what i get back from it. Creating, designing and making has got me through some really tough spots over the past couple of years, it has kept me focused, motivated and has boosted my confidence receiving positive feedback about my creations.

What will you be bringing to the market?

I love selling in Brighton, Ive had some of the most interesting and inspiring people come to my stall and im really looking forward to the next market in September. I will have lots new products with me including Macabre Medals and Cadaverous Torso Cavities.

My prices vary from an Eccentric card for £5 up to £200 for a limited edition Cadaverous Cavity.

Each product is handmade, using the best quality products and made to a high specification. I only sell products that I am happy to part with, I wouldn't ever make or sell anything that I don't love myself.

DuPenny - Iconic Brighton brand DuPenny will be joining us with their fabulous collection of unique burlesque inspired illustrations, which you can find emblazoned on a selection of home-wares like wallpaper, cushions and textiles, as well as prints and cards. 

Katie Rewse - Katie is an illustrator based on the South Coast. She creates illustrated goods such as prints, stationery and greetings cards, as well as working on apparel graphics and artwork for surfboards and skateboard decks. Client work has included a variety of projects such as images for magazines, album artwork, posters, surface pattern and storyboarding. Using vibrant colours, playful patterns and a variety of medium, Katie’s work stems from her love of the sea, adventure, and travel.

Jane Hay - Jane is a lady who loves her horses! Her images are created using various mediums because she enjoys conveying images in different ways. As well as her artwork she creates these unusual ornamental pieces, which evoke her love of colour and her subject matter. 

Sarah Meredith - Sarah likes to make fun quirky pieces of jewellery to make you smile! Her work is created using many different materials including precious metals and laser cut plastic and wood, making her designs available to everyone whatever your budget. 

Sharifa Brooks Read - Sharifa is a Brighton trained painter and printmaker, whose work has a strong and recognisable form and reflects her training in Graphic Design and Illustration. She will be exhibiting a range of screen and lino prints, as well as some hand printed kitchen textiles. She had a sale on last time on old work, so grab a bargain! 

Sarah Edmonds - Sarah's work is inspired by nature, unusual characters and stories. She produces screen prints, paper cuts, gouache paintings and line illustrations as well as working digitally. Sarah is inspired by Scandinavian design, and in the summer of 2013 worked as an artist in residence for Kultivera in Tranås, Sweden.

Imogen George Jewellery - Mandie Bailey designs and makes all her jewellery in her workshop in South London. Apart from a basic silversmithing course, Mandie is a self taught jeweller. Chanchala - Stunning steampunk inspired jewellery. Most of her pieces incorporate found objects which are old and unwanted. Her line of jewellery began with a pile of old watch and clock parts which got caught in the 2004 Tsunami, courtesy of her Dad who owns a shop in southern Sri Lanka which was badly damaged. There is so much joy in turning such a tragedy into beautiful pieces of history. You can also find her beautiful new clocks which follow her distinct style.

Michelle Carnie - Jeweller Michele draws her inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement, and nature supplies ideas for designs with birds, insects, animals and flowers continuing to be popular. She aims to keep her jewellery to individual, one-off pieces but, on request, can reproduce from her collection.

Handmade by Hippo - Claire Davies makes pretty mosaic artwok and homewares, all painstaking constructed from tiny tessellations, broken vintage chinas and parkly bits! She is happy to use your input for themes and colours if you would like to discuss commissions like house number signs or special personalized gifts.

Stallholders for July 5th at Brighton Unitarian Church

Roll up, ROLL UP! Were back for 2014 with our handmade markets featuring the very best of Brighton and beyonds creative peeps. Our fourth date is July 5th 11-5pm at Brighton Unitarian Church on New Road.

As usual we have a fabulous mix of brand new faces and regular favourites selling a vast range of arts and crafts including original artwork, homewares, photography, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, fashion, glass and an amazing cafe run by the tasty and fabulous Betsy’s Bake. 

So if your looking for something special and unusual for a gift, or just a treat for yourself, we have some fantastic affordable and unique gifts you certainly will not find on the High street! Support local businesses this year. We have some top quality artists selling their wares and the best thing is you get to meet the person who has designed and made what you are buying. there is a story, creative magic and inspiration behind each product. 

Don’t forget we are also Dog Friendly, even in the cafe, just keep your pooch on a lead so he doesn’t steal the sausage rolls!!!

Shabby Pop Prints - The lovely Christian Howard of Shabby Pop Prints creates images of the British south coast with a modern twist! His popular images are inspired by the beautiful Sussex coast and its shabby decaying piers, magical sunsets and romantic beaches. He carefully prints his images directly onto wood and stone making them into durable and funky art pieces.

Cat the Cat Artwork - French artist Catherine La Faou creates these stunning detailed illustrations available as originals. Her images are also transformed into quirky pieces of original jewellery too. 

Gaby Gassner Jewellery - Gaby creates beautiful statement pieces of jewellery using a restrained colour palette reflecting simplicity and harmony. She finds that Swarovski and semi precious stones are perfectly suited for this purpose. 

Lily Lou - Another market regular Linda Ayres produces eyecatching bold statement jewellery made with recycled and vintage costume jewellery that is sure to turn heads! Many of her pieces feature some serious bling and she also creates a gorgeous range of luxurious bags using upcycled materials too, as well as her new millinery range.

Mica Peet - Mica is an illustrator and all round creator of lovely things including illustrations, jewellery, phone cases and pocket mirrors. Her design philosophy consists of juxtaposing her love of the beautiful natural world with an edgier, modern and idiosyncratic design aesthetic. Check out her new funky jewellery range above! 

Dinah & Co - Market regular and fav' Dinah Dufton creates a vast range of spectacular creative pieces, including, art, stationary, jewellery, body stickers and tattoos and gifts. Her new Glow in the Dark Glitter range of jewellery is spectacularly cool! 

Chanchala - Stunning steampunk inspired jewellery. Most of her pieces incorporate found objects which are old and unwanted. Her line of jewellery began with a pile of old watch and clock parts which got caught in the 2004 Tsunami, courtesy of her Dad who owns a shop in southern Sri Lanka which was badly damaged. There is so much joy in turning such a tragedy into beautiful pieces of history. You can also find her beautiful new clocks which follow her distinct style.

Hania - Gorgeous delicate sterling silver and karat gold jewellery featuring geometric shapes and lines that are so simple yet so striking at the same time. She also creates an organic range featuring beautiful cast delicate seed pods. Check out her gorgeous handmade gold teardrop ring above. 

Manic Minotaur - Scott Nellis is a University of Brighton illustration graduate who creates bright bold powerful pieces full of colour and imagination. He describes himself as a lone crusader on a quest to make your eyes happy!

Solomon Grey - Market regular Joe is back with her exciting illustrated wares, including her stylized teatowels, mugs, aprons, prints and cards. Her work has a country living charm using her distinct images that are always popular at the markets! 

Cat Brown - Talented ceramic artist Cat makes beautiful decorative and functional pieces for the home and garden inspired by nature. She creates her organic work by just working with her hands, a few tools and very little else but the earth and some water to create her distinct and covetable pieces.

Octopus Art - Liz Ikamba creates fun and quirky mini worlds using cowboy and indian figurines, found objects and refuse material. The figures bring up a strong sense of childhood nostalgia, and in their newly created environments they evoke provocative narratives that are poised somewhere between the playful and naive world of childlike imagination, and the dark, violent and often aggressive recesses of the mind. 

Honey Buzzard Prints - The European Honey Buzzard is a summer migrant to Europe and Western Asia, spending its winter in South Africa, where Kristin McClement was born. Her linocuts and prints echo this love of nature and many feature images of animals. 

Vicky Ramsey - Vicky is a London born Artist and Illustrator currently living in Brighton, U.K. Her background is Fine Art, she completed a BA (Hons) at Nottingham Trent University, specialising in Painting and has since diversified to Printmaking and Illustration. You will find fabulous humorous prints, cards, tshirts and bags!

Shelley Morrow - Shelley creates beautiful life drawings in her signature style, some of which are transformed into intricate stitched images, like this one below. 

Shari Elizabeth - Sharon McKendry makes beautiful handmade homewares and jewellery all inspired by her love of bold colours and pretty patterns. She carefully sources all her fabrics and each item has been finished to the highest standard. 

Mrs Hyde - Mandie Thompson runs Mrs-Hyde, and makes beautiful handmade bags, belts, card holders, wallets and belt pouches, all made out of super soft leather and suede. 

Sharifa Brooks Read - Sharifa is a Brighton trained painter and printmaker, whose work has a strong and recognisable form and reflects her training in Graphic Design and Illustration. She will be exhibiting a range of screen and lino prints, as well as some hand printed kitchen textiles.

Amaral Flowers - Ana Amaral creates unusual artwork inspired by her love of nature.Her focus is creating pressed flower pieces that are both modern and contemporary. Amaral Flowers is bringing a very traditional craft into the 21st century.

Remnant Black - Catrin Dudfield is a textile artist creating unique pieces including, brooches, rosettes, cushions, cards, framable art, hangings and decorated vintage china. She has a huge interest in anatomy and a dark sense of humour and this influences her work.

Francesca Twinn - Frannie creates a large range of products including limited edition giclée art prints, photography, cushions, candles, bags, homewares and giftware! 

Be-Stitched - Rachel Paton designs handmade bespoke dresses which can be made in any Length, Sleeve Length and Neckline of choice. Her aim is to make clothing that can fit a wide range of people because she believes this is something that’s missing from a lot of high street shops.

Lauren Hayes - Lauren creates unusual paper crafts and textile home accessories, inspired by her love of flowers and nature, in candy box colours.  Find wreaths, box framed pieces, ornamental boxes and even beautiful lamps. The beauty of using paper is it allows the light to shine through the textured surface.

Troy Ohlson - Local scenes inspired by nature, Troys work is about atmosphere, feeling and colour. As both a Painter and a Printmaker, Troy blurs the boundaries between the two, mixing media within each image; often adding collage, watercolour, acrylic, and pen & ink to her paintings, etchings and collagraphs.

LAST BFQ Line up - June to July 2014!

This is the last of our 6 months of rotating exhibitions at this popular seaside destination, showcasing a vast array of talented local artists work. Our last show runs 6th June to 20th July, a 7 week exhibition. We will be open Thursday & Friday 11-4pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10-5pm.

There will be an eclectic mix of contemporary and affordable arts and crafts on display, including original artwork, prints, cards, photography, ceramics, glass wear, jewellery, fashion and textiles.

You can find us slap bang on Brighton Seafront in the Fisherman’s Quarter, which is on Kings Road Arches. If you are looking at the sea we are a short 5 minutes walk to the right of the Palace Pier. Lookout for the big boats outside!  

SU BREAKWELL - Suzanne designs beautiful handmade paper cuttings inspired by nature. Her intricate designs are so detailed they do not strike you as papercuttings at first. She will also be bringing her breathtaking handmade paper bird sculptures, which will be flying their way into the gallery to adorn our exhibition! 

CHRIS HAGAN - Chris is a talented artist illustrator who creates high quality limited edition prints. His stunning work is inspired by folk tales, folk art and contemporary art and illustration. His detailed art sucks you in to his world and takes you on a journey of his imagination and beyond.

MOIS AND TATI-LOIS - Natalia Price Cabrera creates stunning centrepiece lighting, all handmade and designed by her. Her jazzy colourful designs are both eyecatching and stylish, and are sure to bring a ray of light into your room! 

DINAH & CO  - A fabulous collection by the talented Dinah Dufton includes a vast range of delectable delights and designed, created and executed by Dinah’s clever mind. Her collection on display includes pretty handmade bohemian luxe jewellery, original artwork (like her spirograph and speech wave series) and funky items like temporary tattoos, body stickers and stationary.

LIZ TOOLE - Excited have local artist Liz Toole back with us again for our last exhibition with her popular iconic lino prints, screen prints and some originals all based around her love of nature and birds. Liz originally trained as a ceramic artist before turning to her sketchbook when travelling in Africa.  She believes this is what re-introduced her to nature, as she witnessed the most beautiful and extreme flora and fauna, which is still highly important in her work.

HELLO DODO - Talented screenprinting couple Ali Lewry and James Beale make up Hello Dodo, a funky Brighton based brand who design and print funky artwork from their home with their homemade printing press Preston! Their many aim is to make people smile, and their work frequently features puns and witty typography.

REMNANT BLACK - Catrin Dudfield is a textile artist creating unique pieces including, brooches, rosettes, cushions, cards, framable art, hangings and decorated vintage china. She has a huge interest in anatomy and a dark sense of humour and this influences her work.

LUBILOU - Lisa Gyalog makes fabulous and detailed handmade ceramic sheep, rabbits and chickens all with their own personal backstory! Lisa also makes beautiful textural decorations and homewares, including tiles, plates, coasters and also a selection of brooches, all in her signature style using washed out undersaturated dreamy colours. 

CISSIE EDNA'S FANCIES - Jess Ortega-Parkin runs Cissie Edna’s Fancies, which features hand made jewellery and fashion accessories made out of a selection of material such as shrink plastic, felt, pmc, reclaimed textiles and acrylic. Inspired by a fusion of 1960s popular culture, kitsch and cult movie classics. 

MICA PEET - Mica is a fresh new illustrator & surface designer who is deeply inspired by the quirky undertones of the beautiful natural world. You can find her quirky design aesthetic in the forms of jewellery, illustration’s, home decor, fashion accessories & iPhone cases. Her designs feature a menagerie of furry and featured friends in her distinct style.

NAOMI FRANCES - Naomi creates amazing one of a kind stained glass designs, pushing the boundaries of traditional stained glass. She cleverly works found objects like shells, china and pebbles into her work and uses a variety of textures in her glass to create an interesting juxtaposition of materials. Many of her pieces are seaside themed, but she also creates tiny stained glass birds and stars which are always popular. Like any piece of stained glass, her creations come alive as soon as sunlight streams through them…

HELEN LUCAS - Innovative ceramic artist Helen creates stoneware ceramics inspired by the rich textures of the urban and natural landscapes of Sussex and Brighton. Expect to find quirky functional mugs, vases and dishes. 

JIM PILSTON - Jim creates these stunning handmade wooden decorative sculptures. Wherever possible he uses recycled, reclaimed and salvaged materials, and is inspired by English and German folk toys, popular art and childrens animation from the Seventies.

HANIA JEWELLERY - Gorgeous delicate sterling silver and karat gold jewellery featuring geometric shapes and lines that are so simple yet so striking at the same time. Timeless and contemporary all at the same time. 

BIRDYBRAIN - Jessica Barrah runs Birdybrain which features her beautiful techni-colour designs on canvases, prints, cards, teatowels, bags, cushions and mugs. She uses many techniques in her work, screenprinting, lino cutting and digital, but her work always follows a consistent cheerful, bright and fun style. Jessica designs an array of super cute animals and characters, just the thing for jazzing up a children’s bedroom or equally perfect for anyone with a taste for bold colourful designs.

BASKET & BOND - Sam and Nicola are the lovely girls from Basket and Bond who will be joining us with their pretty decorative homewares and stationary. They collect corks and create these unique and pretty memo boards, as well as other stylish pieces for your kitchen and home organising. 

PAUL COX - Paul is an award winning sculptor. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools, London and has been a practising artist and sculptor since 1999. He creates stunning metal work pieces for the garden made with wood, resin, metal and found materials. His creations are beautiful and dreamy, and depict many themes of nature.

KATY DORMER - Katy’s work is all about creating an experience for the beholder. She loves watching people interact with her creations, following stitches with their fingers embracing texture of the fabric. Or wide eyes taking in bold and clashing colours. She utilises flaws, rips, tears and rough edges adding feathers that tickle and shimmer in the light. Shells, slate and vintage buttons are her jewels. Stitching shows the journey of her design like she’s sketching. Katy’s aim is to draw you in to a little bit of her world in that moment.

She always loves to create with vintage & new materials, so most of the components she uses for her designs have been carefully sourced or recycled. Her button and found object jewellery made from her vast ever growing hoard is always a popular choice, as is her delicate intricate embroideries which can be found as brooches or artwork.

BEACH SHACK PROJECT - Jewellery made from Flotsam and Jetsam found whilst beachcombing. Using mostly sea glass and sea pottery (shards of plates, bottles & tiles that have been eroded by the sea against the sand) in her work, Hannah creates wearable nautical themed jewellery for the beach bum at heart.

Imogen George Jewellery - Mandie Bailey designs and makes all her jewellery in her workshop in South London. Apart from a basic silversmithing course, Mandie is a self taught jeweller. Working primarily with sterling silver her main style is cutting organic shapes from silver by hand. 

Betty Shek - Market regular Betty Shek returns with her popular wares. Betty is a bit of a magpie and collects and hoards buttons and trinkets which she turns into beautiful pieces of jewellery. She also creates stunning detailed and intricate embroideries which you can buy as artwork or brooches.

Dinah&Co - Dinah creates a vast range of spectacular creative pieces, including, art, stationary, jewellery, body stickers and tattoos and gifts.Dinah is one of those people who has to make. Sit her on a desert island and she will try to make glass from the sand or jewels from the pebbles. Dinah is interested in a lot of things and so she tries to make her work in collections which are stand alone and connected only where it works to do so.

Louisa Marsh - Louisa Marsh is an Illustrator and Jewellery Designer from Brighton who recently graduated from the Arts University, Bournemouth. Following a number of successful projects explored throughout the duration of her undergraduate degree she has developed a particular interest in children's fiction illustration, inspired by the natural world, whilst exploiting the subtle textures found within it.

Linescapes - Amalia Sanchez de la Blanca specialises in designing simple and elegant products which display a connectivity between all aspects of her artwork with her love of interiors and graphic design.

English Handmade Soap - Faith McCartney is the brains behind English Handmade Soap, which produces handmade high quality glycerine soaps which are both decorative and practical. English Handmade Soap draws on the 1950’s patterns and colour palettes for design inspiration and comes in delighful scents like rose, lemongrass and lavender.

David Bennett - David Bennett started working in animation and illustration before setting up his own business later last year designing his own artwork which he illustrates, screenprints and lino cuts to create quirky images featuring animals and nature and random things that take his interest!

Miesje Chafer - Oxford based Miesje uses various different techniques to decorate and manipulate fabric and paper. Taking inspiration from all she finds around her, her designs are a hotch potch of colour, pattern and texture, intended to brighten the home and enliven the soul. 

Kalee Bones - Kalee Bones is the creative outlet for Kalee "Bones" Jones, a Brighton based needle and thread enthusiast. With her modern take on needlework , Kalee specialises in bright, fun, colourful accessories for the home. From coasters to framed stitches and wall art - inject some personality into your home!

PaperKutz - Mars Miller from Paper Kutz uses hand crafted paper cutting techniques to produce high quality unique pictures and cards. His products highlight depth of shadowing, they are intriguing, subtle but simple. Not 2d not 3d. The designs are not printed, they capture imagery through the use of negative space and shadow. Inspired by the city and ghosts from our past.

Kelly Wink Design - Kelly creates stunning textile bags, purses and cushions all with a feminine style. Find pretty embroidered flowers and foliage adorning her creations in candy coloured washed out hues.

They handmade incense, candles, bags and throws made from unused recycled material, upcycled jackets, Herb bags and cards and prints from original artwork.

Brighton Fishing Quarter Exhibition - Exhibiting Artists Round 3

We are organising 5 rotating exhibitions at this popular seaside destination, and this is our third show now... showcasing a vast array of talented local artists work. There will be an eclectic mix of contemporary and affordable arts and crafts on display, including original artwork, prints, cards, photography, ceramics, glass wear, jewellery, fashion, handmade soap and textiles.

Our third batch of artists will be on display from 2nd May - 1st June, which is a 5 week exhibition. We will be open Friday 11-4pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10-5pm, as well as bank holidays during May 10-5pm.

Vicky will be selling prints, cards and badges of her work.

Beach Shack Project - Beach Shack Project specializes in jewellery and homewares made from flotsam and jetsam picked up from the beach. Shells, sea pottery, sea glass, driftwood and other bits & bobs are lovingly reworked into new pieces, all with a distinct beach theme.

Iveta Goddard - Iveta is a ceramics maker and designer, working from her garden studio in West Sussex. She produces contemporary, handmade ceramic for domestic and decorative use, combining unique design  ideas with traditional techniques. Her pieces depict many seaside themes, a perfect fit for our seaside gallery!

Treefrog Illustration - Jasmine Mercer from Treefrog Illustration returns with her quirky affordable illustrations, including a new sea inspired range shown here. She has illustrated many children's books and her popular artwork which features people and animals has a delightful way of telling a story through the characters in them and their interactions with each other. Cards also available. 

PaperKutz - Mars Miller from Paper Kutz uses hand crafted paper cutting techniques to produce high quality unique pictures and cards. His products highlight depth of shadowing, they are intriguing, subtle but simple. Not 2d not 3d. The designs are not printed, they capture imagery through the use of negative space and shadow. Inspired by the city and ghosts from our past.

Trynka - Back again is the lovely Victoria Lloyd of Trynka, a talented jeweller creating both bold clean-lined designs and subtle textured pieces. Take some silver, some geometric shapes, smoosh them together and the result is something both elegant and impactful. Unique, simple and striking shapes that you can wear season to season.

David Bennett - David creates funky linoprints and illustrations with a cartoony edge. With a background in animation you can see how this translates easily and seamlessly into his current artwork. David will be exhibiting prints and cards of his designs.

Shabby Pop Prints - The lovely Christian from Shabby Pop Prints is back selling his very popular photography. His dreamy atmospheric pictures are cleverly printed onto wood to create a durable long lasting image. Inspired by coastal scenes, nature and interesting props, his work appeals to a wide audience of people wanting to capture a piece of the seaside to take home with them.

Baglady of Brighton - Katy creates stunning fashion, accessorizes and homewares all made from found objects and upcycled fabrics. This means no two pieces will ever be the same. Katy utilises flaws, rips, tears and rough edges adding feathers that tickle and shimmer in the light, and shells, slate, driftwood & vintage buttons are her jewels. Stitching shows the journey of her design like she’s sketching.

Naomi Frances - Naomi Frances is a talented stained glass artist working with contemporary themes and original materials. Not constricted to just using glass in her work, found objects like shells, china, watches, and even old beer bottle lids find their way into her work to create unusual special pieces.

Dinah & Co - The brilliant Dinah from Dinah & Co will be back with her pretty jewellery, ranging from hand stamped pendants, to rustic raw cut semi precious rocks to sea worn glass. She will also be showcasing her artwork at the gallery including soundwave artwork and her spirograph pieces above. 

English Handmade Soap - Faith McCartney is the brains behind English Handmade Soap, which produces handmade high quality glycerine soaps which are both decorative and practical. English Handmade Soap draws on the 1950’s patterns and colour palettes for design inspiration and comes in delighful scents like rose, lemongrass and lavender.

Paul Cox - Paul is an award winning sculptor. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools, London and has been a practising artist and sculptor since 1999. He creates stunning metal work pieces for the home and garden combined with wood and found materials. His creations are beautiful and dreamy, and depict many themes of nature.

Day in the life of... 3 On The Shelf

Today's Day In The Life feature is about a fabulous new company called 3 On The Shelf, who design luxurious screen printed and illustrated textiles, homewares, fashion, art, gifts and stationary. Their brand has a distinct style that is synonymous with a laid back chic seaside attitude. A collaboration between three sisters, Caroline, Ursula and Annabel, 3 On The Shelf create limited edition runs of their products with as little environmental impact as possible, for example their scarves are made from the most beautiful soft organic cotton.     

One of the aspects I love about 3 On The Shelf is their attention to detail and their stunning colour choices, undersaturated hues and bright zesty shades are paired singular or together in combinations for dramatic results. 

"At Three on the shelf we love design, and we love designing. We are three sisters with professional backgrounds as diverse as Jewellery, Ceramics, Illustration, Sculpture, Furniture and Garden Design, and we are very excited to be working together. It is important to us that there is an ethical integrity to our products and all our designs are original to us."

As mentioned above, the three sisters all bring a background in many creative industries together to maximise their business potential and creativity. 

Caroline's training is in 3 dimensional design, jewellery and silversmithing. Whilst still at college she won the prestigious Frei Otto award, and went on to produce beautifully intricate and complex designs in silver, glass and coloured resins. Caroline has extensive retail experience having worked as buyer and manager of an independent men's outfitter, and special advisor for Peter's Barn Gallery on jewellery exhibitions.

Her design experience diversified into furniture design, in an advisory capacity, specialising in colour designation and combination. More recently Caroline has been working on Interior Design projects.

Ursula trained , and worked as a B.S.L and Deaf Blind Communicator and lip speaker. After moving to Sussex Ursula started working as a gardener, and later as a Garden Designer. Her designs combine a strong ability to create intimate spaces and family areas, and accommodate beautiful subtle colour with practical and clever planting schemes.

Ursula has always been interested in Interior Design, and having re-designed her own house and carried out most of the work herself, was recently offered a post as designer to a property development company.

Annabel has worked as a ceramic artist, designer, sculptor, painter and illustrator for over twenty years, showing in joint exhibitions and many one-man shows. Her work is in private collections across Europe, the U.S.A, and Antigua, and in the Bill Ismay Collection at York City Museum.

Annabel's work is featured in 'The Tile' by Kenneth Clarke M.B.E, and 'A History of 20th Century British Tiles', by Chris Blanchett, and has appeared in various Lifestyle, Interiors and Furniture Magazines. She set up and curated Peters Ban Gallery for over ten years.

Recent work includes a bronze memorial sculpture, book illustrations, and designing the new Logo and promotional paintings for avante-garde Circus company 'Pirates of the Carabina'.

Annabel teaches regularly, and is frequently on judging panels for Art and Craft Exhibitions.

You can find 3 On The Shelf exhibiting for the last weekend at Brighton Fishing Quarter Gallery, showcasing many nautical themed pieces like fish bags, scarves, crab notebooks and seahorse cushions! We are open Friday 12-5pm and 10am - 5pm at the weekend, untill 27th April, and then our exhibition will switch again. Please check our website for updated artists for the next exhibition. 

 Below the lovely ladies from 3 On The Shelf have shared a day in their lives, full of colour and printing magic! 

Today we are all meeting up at our workshop adjoining Annabel's studio, having just dropped some stock off with the lovely Carolyn at Black Sheep in Midhurst.

Our big mugs of tea stay hot on the burner while we get started, with a mix of Radio 4, Radio 6 or something from Annabel's vast CD collection.  

Discussion time, ideas (something we find hard to contain), e-mails, FB and Twitter, any orders to be packed off wrapped up ...

As we are printing today we get down to it fairly quickly so as to fit in as much as possible before our other commitments get in the way.

Ursula has turned up with a pile of beautiful organic cotton scarves and cushion covers she's made up and we set to.

The technical gadgets we use to help us are very sophisticated... Caro struggles with reaching sometimes!

We also have the added excitement of avoiding this handsome chap every time we need to go and wash our screens. His chasing us to keep us away from his six lovely ladies has caused much hilarity or fear, depending on who is washing the screens!

Lunch is slotted in with a bowl of rice, salad and veg and more tea.

And then back to printing.

We are lucky with the weather today and it has means that we can dry outside watched over by our quality controller.

Everything always finishes rather abruptly with one of us noticing the time and children or teaching to get to and today is no different. We do manage however to pop back into Black Sheep and are delighted to see the stock already out on display.

Day in the life of... Iveta Goddard

Today's day in the life feature is about Iveta Goddard, a very gifted ceramic artist based near Horsham, who is currently exhibiting with us at Brighton Fishing Quarter Gallery untill 27th April. Working from her picturesque garden studio in West Sussex, Czech Republic born Iveta produces stunning contemporary, handmade ceramics for domestic and decorative use, combining unique design  ideas with traditional techniques.  Her pretty pieces carry a distinct organic theme inspired by her surroundings.

  Much of her work is inspired by nature and things around her. Four main themes, animals (cats, dogs, birds and fish), flowers, houses and contemporary designs (lines and prints), are used to produce original shapes and forms.

Iveta studied ceramics at the College of Art in the Czech Republic from 1991-1994. In 1997 Iveta began making ceramics in England. Since then she has been selling to selected galleries and private clients around the country.

All Iveta’s pottery is hand-made in white earthenware or stoneware. The pots are hand thrown on the pottery wheel or  hand-built  using sheets of white clay, as well as combinations of both techniques. It is fresh and contemporary  in  design which is using techniques such as engraving, carving and stamping. They are then  decorated with oxides and colourful glazes, although Iveta likes to decorate with minimal areas to emphasize the natural colour and texture of the clay. Finally they are fired in an electric kiln to 1020°C or 1240°C.

Her work is a perfect fit for the Brighton Fishing Quarter Gallery and features many nautical themed pieces like these stunning boats, fish & beach hut coasters and beautiful plates with harbour scenes on. We are open every Friday 12-5pm and Weekends 10am - 5pm, untill 27th April, and then our exhibition will switch again. We will be opening more days over the Easter period too, please check our website for updated extra opening hours. If you are free on Saturday 5th April Iveta will be running the gallery with the lovely Vicky from Woah There Pickle, so pop in and say Hi!

There is something for everyone in Iveta’s work. You can choose from a distinctive collection of: wall or free standing clocks, plates, bowls, cups, coasters, tiles, wall plaques, mirrors, oil burners, candle holders, bells, wind chimes, napkin rings (possibly with initials for wedding receptions), pendants, cufflinks and much more. Also she can be commissioned and is willing to discuss the specific needs of the client. 

Below Iveta has kindly shared a day in her life, I must say I am very jealous of the chickens!!!

6:30 Wake up. My day starts with boring stuff like unloading the dishwasher and washing machine, making lunch boxes. I'm seriously thinking about hot dinners for kids!!!   Let the chickens out Bobby, Twitter, Pigeony & Ginger.

9am Short walk to my studio. Today I need to do some glazing.

Not time for lunch today, but can not miss out on my Latte. Love my coffee machine.

2:50 just in time, my trusty kiln  is loaded and ready for glaze firing. Now my family duty starts. Taking kids to their clubs.

9pm back to work. Tonight I am designing my new cards for earrings. While I am on computer I am checking my emails, Facebook and Twitter.

22:15 Just remembered that I wanted to print new limited addition pictures for tomorrow. Luckily it is going very well and I am finishing just after midnight. Can't wait to hit the pillow.

Day in the life of... Paul Cox

Today's day in the life feature is about the extremely talented sculptor Paul Cox. Creating a stunning range of affordable unique gifts for the home and garden, his pieces are quirky, colourful and made with a dash of humour. As well as his small scale work he also works to commission to create huge impressive large scale installations in his signature style.   

His designs reflect a happy land where bright birds and whimsical bunnies live under spotted mushrooms and clouds.. basically his work is sure to make you smile!

Paul specialises in mixed Media construction, using mostly resin techniques, as well as woodwork and welding to create his beautiful pieces. He is an award winning sculptor who exhibits internationally. Paul was awarded the Henry Moore scholarship and sponsored by Time Out magazine to study MA sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools, London.

"My working method is a unique and labour intensive process. Each piece is one off and not created from a mold. The shapes of the sculpture are usually carved from high-density polyurethane foam. The foam can be easily carved and sanded to the desired shape. The finished form is then covered with polyester resin and 2/3 layers of fibreglass matt. The sculpture is carved and sanded. When the surface has cured copper elements are added and fixed in place with another layer of glass matt."

When the second coat is cured an undercoat layer of resin is applied; this is the first base colour coat. Final changes and adjustments are made at this point. The final coat is a coloured hard wearing wax impregnated polyester resin."

"For me being an artist is a form of constant play and enquiry in many forms and on many levels……my work is born from the bonding of internal and external experiences and the conclusion of a piece is the point at which it exists by itself with me being the link in a process of creation."

"As well as being featured in the Guardian newspaper, my work is represented world-wide in major public and private collections.

I recognise that play is important, physical or intellectual play is involved in anything that is created."

Quite funny, I was looking at Paul's website whilst writing this blog piece and recognized his rabbits below. In winter 2011 me and my friend found them in London and had a whale of a time posing and larking about on them. Interactive, super cute and fun! This is one of my friends photos below...

Our second date is April 5th, 11-5pm at Brighton Unitarian Church on New Road. As usual we have a fabulous mix of brand new faces and regular favourites selling a vast range of arts and crafts including original artwork, homewares, photography, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, fashion, glass and an amazing cafe run by the tasty and fabulous Betsy's Bake and Brownies by the one and only Brighton Brownie Company!

So if your looking for something special and unusual for Mother's Day, a birthday, or just a treat for yourself, we have some fantastic affordable and unique gifts you certainly will not find on the High street! Support local businesses this year. We have some top quality artists selling their wares and the best thing is you get to meet the person who has designed and made what you are buying. there is a story, creative magic and inspiration behind each product. Also we have the fabulous Adam Bastock from Honeycomb Imaging who will be papping away at the days events, you can see all the photos from the day on his website after the event!

Don't forget we are also Dog Friendly, even in the cafe, just keep your pooch on a lead so he doesn't steal the sausage rolls!!!

Remnant Black - Catrin Dudfield is a textile artist creating unique pieces including, brooches, rosettes, cushions, cards, framable art, hangings and decorated vintage china. She has a huge interest in anatomy and a dark sense of humour and this influences her work.

James Pilston - James creates a vast body of work including illustration, figures, furniture, mosaics and decorative sculpture. Wherever possiblehe uses recycled, reclaimed and salvaged materials, and is inspired by English and German folk toys, popular art and childrens animation from the Seventies.

Cat Brown - Talented ceramic artist Cat makes beautiful decorative and functional pieces for the home and garden inspired by nature. She creates her organic work by just working with her hands, a few tools and very little else but the earth and some water to create her distinct and covetable pieces.

Vicky Ramsey - Vicky is a London born Artist and Illustrator currently living in Brighton, U.K. Her background is Fine Art, she completed a BA (Hons) at Nottingham Trent University, specialising in Painting and has since diversified to Printmaking and Illustration. Liz Toole - The amazing Liz Toole returns with her feathery lino prints, screen prints and some origianals all based around her love of nature. Liz originally trained as a ceramic artist before turning to her sketchbook when travelling in Africa.  She believes this is what re-introduced her to nature, as she witnessed the most beautiful and extreme flora and fauna, which is still highly important in her work.

Karen Rao - Karen Rao makes super funky contemporary felt wares, including original artwork, cards, fashion and gifts. One of her popular ranges are her unusual animal inspired hats, and she even has a celebrity fan in Holywood, Kat Von D!

Betty Shek - Market regular Betty Shek returns with her popular wares. Betty is a bit of a magpie and collects and hoards buttons and trinkets which she turns into beautiful pieces of jewellery. She also creates stunning detailed and intricate embroideries which you can buy as artwork or brooches.

Adam Regester - Market fav Adam is a talented illustrator who is inspired by local and iconic architecture, animals and things he finds around himself in everyday life, breaking down the images to simple almost naive sketch work with bold block colour accents to produce graphic and commercially viable images which work well on a variety of surfaces producing a variety of original art pieces and affordable gifts and accessories.

Elusive Designs - Bryn and Helen run Elusive Designs, a new company that has just started up in Brighton. They design funky t-shirts and all of their designs are screen printed onto 100% organic cotton t-shirts.

Mica Peet - Mica is an illustrator and all round creator of lovely things including illustrations, jewellery, phone cases, pocket mirrors and lots of other illustrated loveliness. Her design philosophy consists of juxtaposing her love of the beautiful natural world with an edgier, modern and idiosyncratic design aesthetic.

Partially Obscured - Su Wilson runs Partially Obscured, which specialises in stunning handmade kiln fired glass jewellery and homewares. Su is inspired by the optical properties of glass and how no other medium can transmit and reflect light in the same luminous way, Her beautiful glass bunting is pictured below and would look stunning hung infront of a window so the light pours through!

Handmade by Hippo - Claire Davies makes pretty mosaic artwok and homewares, all painstaking constructed from tiny tessellations, broken vintage chinas and parkly bits! She is happy to use your input for themes and colours if you would like to discuss commissions like house number signs or special personalized gifts.

Chanchala - Stunning steampunk inspired jewellery Most of her pieces incorporate found objects which are old and unwanted. Her line of jewellery began with a pile of old watch and clock parts which got caught in the 2004 Tsunami, courtesy of her Dad who owns a shop in southern Sri Lanka which was badly damaged. There is so much joy in turning such a tragedy into beautiful pieces of history. You can also find her beautiful new clocks which follow her distinct style.

Dinah&Co - Dinah creates a vast range of spectacular creative pieces, including, art, stationary, jewellery, body stickers and tattoos and gifts.Dinah is one of those people who has to make. Sit her on a desert island and she will try to make glass from the sand or jewels from the pebbles. Dinah is interested in a lot of things and so she tries to make her work in collections which are stand alone and connected only where it works to do so.

Fen & Co - Ria Wilson runs Fen & Co, named after her lovely Schipperke dog! Ria creates beautiful jewellery inspired by nature and her love of being outdoors, she is currently training in gardening at a historic estate, surrounded by ancient woodland and Gothic architecture, and you can see how this echoes through her pieces.

Annabel Munn - Annabel is another multi-talented artist who creates amazing ceramics, paintings and illustrations. Annabel’s work has appeared in Furniture magazines and Lifestyle and Interiors magazines and her work is in private collections across Europe the U.S.A, Antigua, and in the ‘Bill Ismay Collection’, York City Museum Gallery. Her ceramics collection above is so effortlessly chic and effective.

Nick Orsborn - The popular artist Nick Orsborn creates amazing one of a kind addictive resin jewellery that is bold, bright and eyecatching! His pieces are contemporary and timeless at the same time with many highbrow clients and work in collections and museums. As well as his jewellery Nick is also a member of the prestigious Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and creates equally bold bright renditions of colourful characters and situations!

David Bennett - David Bennett started working in animation and illustration before setting up his own business later last year designing his own artwork which he screenprints and lino cuts to create quirky images featuring animals and nature and random things that take his interest!

Troy Ohslon - Troy Ohlson is an award winning local artist whose work is about atmosphere, feeling and colour, and inspired by the great outdoors. As both a Painter and a Printmaker, Troy blurs the boundaries between the two, mixing media within each image; often adding collage, watercolour, acrylic, and pen & ink to her paintings, etchings and collagraphs. She also makes beautiful delicate knitted wire jewellery which you will find for sale!

Shaw Things Jewellery - Helen Shaw creates pretty sterling silver jewellery set with bold eye catching stones and delicate faceted crystals. All jewellery is handmade in sterling silver by Helen in the UK and is guaranteed for life. With a strong bohemian theme going on throughout her work, her pieces are timeless investments to wear now and forever.

Shabby Pop Prints - Christian Howard of Shabby Pop Prints creates images of the British south coast with a modern twist! His popular images are inspired by the beautiful Sussex coast and its shabby decaying piers, magical sunsets and romantic beaches. He carefully prints his images directly onto wood and stone making them into durable and funky art pieces.

Bewitched - In 2011 Colette teamed up with Kathy to use their passion to dispel the negative myths surrounding different spiritual paths such as natural magic, healing meduimship to name but a few. They handmade incense, bags and throws made from unused recycled material, upcycled jackets, Herb bags and cards and prints from original artwork.

Brighton Fishing Quarter Exhibition - Exhibiting Artists Round 2

Stained Glass Bird by Naomi Frances.

We are organising 5 rotating exhibitions at this popular seaside destination, showcasing a vast array of talented local artists work. This is our second show on untill 27th April, a 6 week exhibition. We will be open Friday 11-4pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10-5pm, and extra days (Monday and Thursday) over Easter. 

There will be an eclectic mix of contemporary and affordable arts and crafts on display, including original artwork, prints, cards, photography, ceramics, glass wear, jewellery, fashion and textiles.

You can find us slap bang on Brighton Seafront in the Fisherman’s Quarter, which is on Kings Road Arches. If you are looking at the sea we are a short 5 minutes walk to the right of the Palace Pier. Lookout for the big boats outside! And Bean sunbathing!

Iveta Goddard - Iveta is a ceramics maker and designer, working from her garden studio in West Sussex. She produces contemporary, handmade ceramic for domestic and decorative use, combining unique design  ideas with traditional techniques. Her pieces depict many seaside themes, a perfect fit for our seaside gallery!

English Handmade Soap - Gorgeous soap that smells good enough to eat, including pungent rose, lemongrass and lavender. Faith McCarty, who runs English Handmade Soap is a designer-maker of high quality glycerine soaps which are both decorative and practical, English Handmade Soap draws on the 1950’s patterns and colour palettes for design inspiration.

Trynka - Back again is the lovely Victoria Lloyd of Trynka, a talented jeweller creating both bold clean-lined designs and subtle textured pieces. Take some silver, some geometric shapes, smoosh them together and the result is something both elegant and impactful. Unique, simple and striking shapes that you can wear season to season.

Beach Shack Project - Jewellery made from Flotsam and Jetsam found whilst beachcombing. Using mostly sea glass and sea pottery (shards of plates, bottles & tiles that have been eroded by the sea against the sand) in her work, Hannah creates wearable nautical themed jewellery for the beach bum at heart.

Dinah&Co - a fabulous collection by the talented Dinah Dufton includes a vast range of delectable delights and designed, created and executed by Dinah's clever mind. Her collection on display includes pretty handmade bohemian luxe jewellery, original artwork (like her spirograph and speech wave series) and funky items like temporary tattoos, body stickers and stationary.

Naomi Frances - Naomi creates amazing one of a kind stained glass designs, pushing the boundaries of traditional stained glass. She cleverly works found objects like shells, china and pebbles into her work and uses a variety of textures in her glass to create an interesting juxtaposition of materials. Many of her pieces are seaside themed, but she also creates tiny stained glass birds and stars which are always popular. Like any piece of stained glass, her creations come alive as soon as sunlight streams through them...

Karen Rao - Karen is an amazing contemporary felt artist who creates unique hand felted wall art and accessories. These include fabulous animal inspired floppy eared felted hats, dainty floral jewellery, unusual art cards and an array of other hand felted goodies! She even has celebrity clients like Kat Von D who proudly owns one of her black cat hats!

Woah There Pickle - Vicky Day creates charming and quirky prints based on her travels and things that make her smile! Having completed an internship at the prestigious Hatch Show Print in Nashville, an old school printing house created in 1879 who have made posters for everyone from Elvis to Mumford & Sons, Vicky honed her skills here and learnt a lot about her chosen craft. With a variety of printing techniques under her belt, she creates Lino prints, Foil prints, Screen prints and Letter pressed prints and cards.

3 on the Shelf - A new company producing gorgeous, original and beautifully designed items for you and your home. Limited edition runs, made in Britain, with as little environmental impact as we are able, but always trying to do better. You can find fabulous scarves, bags, cards, artwork and notebooks.

Mica Peet - Mica is a fresh new illustrator & surface designer who is deeply inspired by the quirky undertones of the beautiful natural world. You can find her quirky design aesthetic in the forms of jewellery, illustration's, home decor, fashion accessories & iPhone cases. Her designs feature a menagerie of furry and featured friends in her distinct style.

Betty Shek - the one and only Betty Shek continues through into our next exhibition with her jewellery and artwork. She always loves to create with vintage & new materials, so most of the components she uses for her designs have been carefully sourced or recycled. Her button and found object jewellery made from her vast ever growing hoard is always a popular choice, as is her delicate intricate embroideries which can be found as brooches or artwork.

Nnuroj - Jorunn Hustoft is the magic behind Nnuroj, a contemporary knitware company specialising in the unique, beautiful and desirable! All her products are manufactured using a hand-powered domestic knitting machine. Every textural detail is created by hand to achieve the luxurious, high-quality finish. The modernisation of traditional crafts techniques is a central theme within the development of her designs. Inspired by lace making, upholstery and the ways that wool can benefit our living environment.

Shabby Pop Prints - Christian Howard of Shabby Pop Prints creates images of the British south coast with a modern twist! His popular images are inspired by the beautiful Sussex coast and its shabby decaying piers, magical sunsets and romantic beaches. He carefully prints his images directly onto wood and stone making them into durable and funky art pieces.

Katy Dormer - Katy's work is all about creating an experience for the beholder. She loves watching people interact with her creations, following stitches with their fingers embracing texture of the fabric. Or wide eyes taking in bold and clashing colours. She utilises flaws, rips, tears and rough edges adding feathers that tickle and shimmer in the light. Shells, slate and vintage buttons are her jewels. Stitching shows the journey of her design like she's sketching. Katy's aim is to draw you in to a little bit of her world in that moment.

David Bennett - previously an accomplished animator, illustrator and graphic designer, David is a bit of a have a go creative. He is now loving getting back to basics, hand making screenprints and carving out linocuts, which hark back to his animation background, creating cute quirky cartoon-y images and characters.

RattyCatCat - Run by the lovely Libby Morris, rattycatcat specialises predominantly in greetings cards and other paper based products but you will also find quirky limited edition prints and beautifully unique gift items like stationary and cushions. The inspiration behind each design is very simple: Libby just wants to create special things to give to special people.
