Palm Sunday in the Philippines. This is my first Palm Sunday here after returning from a four-year stint in the desert. Great to see everyone carrying and waving the "palaspas", the Filipinos' version of the palm fronds that were waved when Jesus entered Jerusalem. Palm Sunday in Dubai was a more austere occasion, with the churchgoers waving a single palm leaf up in the air. It truly is more fun and colorful in the Philippines!
The early morning sun shines over the fields near my home.
Mall of Asia, Pasay City. The second largest mall in the Philippines and the third largest in Asia. The Mall of Asia Eye standing at 180 feet is on the right side of the photo.

A closer look at the barracuda reveals big, sharp teeth. Yikes!
That's one big barracuda! Fishermen showing off their catch of the day.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that my father's hometown, Dulag, holds a special place in history. As most of us know, Gen. Douglas MacArthur and his troops landed on Red Beach, Palo, Leyte on October 20, 1944 However, Hill 120, commonly known as Catmon Hill, is the site where the first American flag was raised at 10:42 am on the same date by US Liberation Forces. As such, there is a point of contention as to where MacArthur really landed. My aunt says that Palo only made a claim as the first landing site because they were a larger town than Dulag. Hmmm, quite interesting, isn't it?

No wonder it's called a budget airline. The boarding passes look like ordinary receipts! Lol.
My first time to fly Seair (or any other airline aside from Philippine Airlines). The Manila Domestic Airport is the oldest airport. My imagination is running wild, thinking of how things used to be in the olden days. Excited to take my first plane ride for 2013. Will this be another jetsetting year? That remains to be seen. Tacloban, can't wait to see you! :)
Grand Central Station Turns 100!
Want to see more photos of Grand Central’s Centennial? Visit the Grand Central Terminal location page.
Today, New Yorkers are celebrating the 100th birthday of Grand Central Station in style with notable speakers, exhibits on the station’s history and even a cake replica of the station’s iconic four-faced clock. The Beaux-Arts terminal was completed in 1913 and was declared a city landmark in 1968 after nearly being razed. As many as 750,000 travelers pass through Grand Central each day, with many visiting just to photograph the mural of constellations spanning the ceiling or explore the secret “whispering gallery” with its acoustic arches that amplify soft whispers into shouts.
There's something magical about this place. I love, love, love the Grand Central Station! :)
Quinta Market in Quiapo, Manila. I would never associate the color blue with a wet market but this is what catches one's eyes as one passes by this busy street. That and the colorful tiles depicting the produce sold in the market of course.
A reminder of my Dubai life in Quiapo - an arch with the words Ahlan Wasahlan (Welcome in Arabic) Muslim Town and the ubiquitous onion-shaped dome of a mosque with the crescent moon on top. To represent the Moros (indigenous Muslims in the Philippines), you have the sarimanok (a legendary bird of the Maranaos) and the panolong (the two beams protruding in this photo) made ornate by okir (a type of design that traces its roots to Arabic style).
