🌙✨️ I recently got asked on Facebook, "How would our pre-colonial ancestors know what a lion was?" They brought up a good point, as lions don't exist in the Philippines. So how was Arimaonga seen as lion like?

Well, while today Arimaonga is seen as a giant playful lion, they originally were a tiger.

Ok, but Ligaya, there are no tigers in the Philippines. True, today there aren't any native species of tigers. However, doesn't mean they didn't exist before. Excavations in Palawan have unearthed bone fragments of a tiger that once roamed the island of Palawan. Whose to say that they didn't also reach the other islands of what is now known as the Philippines?

Further more, we can look to linguistics. Arimaonga derives from the Malay word, "harimau" which means tiger. It's no coincidence as Malay was the lingua franca of maritime Southeast Asia, including the Philippines. Historical records state that our ancestors, especially those who were traders, spoke Malay, as they were able to understand and communicate with those from other islands in maritime SEA.

The Masjid Al-Dahab, the Golden Mosque of Manila.

Some of the walls beneath the golden dome are inlaid with colorful patterns inspired by Maranao art.

On the lower right are depictions of fern leaves called pako lungat of Maranao okir or art motifs.

On the left could be inspired by Tausug or Yakan weaves, though I'm not sure. Beautiful nonetheless.

My earliest memory of Babu Kwan was during the pandemic. I was reading the news on community pantries, and they were one of the few who offered Halal food. Sadly, due to “red-tagging” (read: the only answer our government can provide for their lack of initiative and competency to make and implement a proper pandemic response hayy), these pantries were forced to stop. And wow, right now, I can’t believe I’m seeing Babu Kwan in real life.

Babu Kwan is named after the term “babu” which means “auntie” in Lanao, Sulu, and Maguindanao. “Kwan” I believe is tagalog (correct me if I’m wrong) for “something you cannot recall, do not know, or does not wish to specify. ” (Kunyare “Kinain namin ni kwan yung kwan. Basta yung kwan ba” parang ganon. Haha)

This Moro-themed restaurant is owned by kuya Abde and ate Khal, who are good friends of my friends JL and Mickle, and their boss Deputy Speaker Mujiv. I wasn’t able to meet her, but I just know that she is the auntie I would love to talk to during family gatherings. Haha. The place boasts of M’ranaw arts and culture through their wall murals of sarimanok, columns painted with moro weaving patterns, delicious moro food, and overall ambience. The restaurant has tables similar to how M'ranaws welcome their guests, together with the baor, a furniture where treasures and ornaments are stored, as seats.

These are what we ordered: Chicken Piyapan, an aladdin serving of Kyuning Rice, Beef Randang, a bowlful of Pisawawan a Manok with chicken cuts, Pancit Maloya, and assorted Balolon for dessert. Balolon is a M’ranaw crepe filled with inti (sweetened coconut). Babu Kwan’s balolon is available in five flavors: strawberry, ube halaya, pandan, durian and mango. Babu Kwan is the only halal certified restaurant in CDO, and is open from 10am to 10pm everyday for the whole month of December, including holidays. They deliver and cater to events, too. Give this place a try! Easily one of the must-go-to places here in Cagayan De Oro.

Z is for Zamboanga Roll! Also known as Lokot-lokot, Jaa, and other names, it is enjoyed by Maranao, Tausug, and Muslim communities in Mindanao. It is made with 3 ingredients (rice flour, sugar, and water), but requires a special, traditional method to make them. An ulayan or strainer made with a coconut shell is filled with batter, then tapped repeatedly to allow the batter to fall into the kalha (kawali, or wok).
