Don’t let a number tell you how much you are worth. If you want to make a career out of creating: having 50 good relationships with customers (wholesalers, website owners etc. Make an effort contacting people. Don’t wait for them to come to you) is going to bring you more value/revenue than 50.000 people that only follow you.

I agree that artists need reblogs in order to grow BUT if you are going to give up on what you love just because you don’t receive enough notes you might want to reconsider your passion or ask yourself whether or not you are living in alignment with your true self.

I’m not here to start an argument, but this last comment is the kind of elitest viewpoint you find in fandom, where more popular bloggers who pull in hundreds of notes with relative ease tell less popular bloggers, “It’s not about the notes. Don’t look to others for validation. Do it for yourself.” This last commenter has over 50,000 followers, and their posts average 200 to 800 notes a piece. So, it’s really easy to be in that position and talk about your true self and personal alignment. Even professional writers and artists talk about a need for validation. Wanting validation is not a bad thing. And I don’t think OP is saying it’s the only thing. Besides, I don’t think the graphic above is talking about “professional” networking. Fandom is a completely different world with regard to creative works than what happens outside of our blogs. We are writing/drawing to a very specific audience, trying to contribute to a community, fulfilling a specific need, and doing it for free. Our work is consumed on a daily basis by people who, in some cases, feel no need to compensate us, and in my opinion, that’s wrong. Fandom is a world where people feed off other people’s creativity. Authors and artists are not being paid for what they do; they do it for the enjoyment of everyone. If someone sees a piece of art they like or reads a story they enjoyed, the least they can do is spread it around for other people to experience.

However, this blog didn’t get 50,000 followers overnight. You have to create and network or have a nice bag of luck shoved under your bed. The only reason this blog has 50k is because I am friends with a guy who is followed by @thatsthat24. He reblogged a prompt an so this blog took off.

About the need for validation. It is cool you call this a ‘popular blog’ and I do feel some sense of validation, but all posts are submissions so I can’t really take credit for that.

I understand that fandom means community and that it is nice to receive notes. I do agree with you to some extent, and although this post might not be the best to comment this on I still want to stress it: Why did you start creating art? This reason may evolve over time, but the one that needs your validation the most is you. Perhaps you create art for the sake of art or you want to express yourself.

@xaveysaur, thanks for your comment but I am no fucking elitist. Yeh, artists thrive off of recognition, I agree. I used to write poetry and get like 2 notes, but I didn’t give up on it. I kept sharing because I loved doing what I did.

You want to sell art but you are only relying on one thing: followers 99% (I made this number up) does that. All I want to say is you have got to take things into your own hands. You are already doing that by asking for people to reblog your content but there are more (effective) options out there. Go email/call a manufacturer, a wholesaler, go places the majority doesn’t. Ask friends, family, followers (5 is already more than enough you know) to email the same contact person. Get yourself out there.
