June 7th, 1942: Edward Hopper completes his best known painting, the seminal Nighthawks. When asked by a Chicago Tribute reporter about the philosophical meaning behind the diner having no clearly visible exits Hopper responded, “Shit. Fuck. I did it again. Goddamnit. Fuck. Not again. I did it again. Shit.” and slammed his hat on his leg.

You Are a Projector for Something You’re Not Aware Of: Your Self | Charles Ray Hastings Jr.
When does a projection become reality? Specifically a projection that is a severely obtuse collection of interpretations of all surroundings.
When do people become certain of their views? When does the world lose its wonder and at every turn, they’ve got it all figured out? That moment when their scope of the world aligns with the state of prosperity or, in a lot of cases, the shitty everything that existing is. More importantly, what is it that tears away years worth of intellectual defense mechanisms? I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

The other day I bought a couple vinyls down in the Annex. Sonic Boom is my jam, the only thing that would ever cause me to move downtown is the surplus of record store and photography hot spots. Honestly every time I am down in this area of the city it's hard for me not to snap a bunch of photo's.
However this time I was with my amazing girlfriend who actually had a destination in mind. So rather than aimlessly wander around The Annex, she took me to a place called the BMV. BMV stands for Books, Magazine, and Video, so its not just your typical bookstore. It has three floors, first floor includes has books and video, second floor has some young adult and a children's section, and finally the third floor is home to comics. Now as soon as she told me about this place I figured this is what's putting Indigo out of business.
I use to feel like the extinction of Chapters and Indigo's was a tragedy. My all time favourite book store was the Chapters just outside of Runnymede Subway Station (Runnymede and Bloor), and I was absolutely shocked to find out it closed only two months after I had first discovered it. But it's obviously businesses like The BMV which are causing them to close up shop.
Now the BMV might not have been an old school converted theatre to book store, but it definitely has it's own finesse. And it's very obvious in this day and age, businesses have to compete against each other forcing them to expand their selection in an attempt to bring customers in. Yet not only did this store have selection, but I would even say they have the best deals in the city on books.
When you go to Indigo a typical book will cost you anywhere from $15-$30, which isn't that expensive. However at the BMV you can get those same books for as low as $6.99. And these books are literally just as pristine as the copies you get from Indigo, which can cost you up to four times as much.
All in all, I left the BMV with three books, and if I spent the exact same amount of money at any Indigo book store ($23) I would have walked out with one book, MAYBE two (and that is stretching it). So now longer will I cry for Indigo bookstores, as I feel no pity for those who cannot help themselves.
It is very clear to me that Indigo wants to continue to make profit off the same business model they have been running off of for years. But if you fight the winds of change you are going to be blown away.
Monday.
