A faux trailer for a dark and gritty reboot of Madeline

(we don’t want this movie, just its trailer).

A woman in a nun’s habit, standing at the top of a staircase, lit by a single candle. She narrows her eyes and says, “Something is not right.” She blows out the candle, leaving the screen dark. Voiceover: In an old house in Paris, all covered with vines -shotgun cocking noise- -fade in to a pan over a decaying brick house covered in dead ivy. It appears heavily barricaded and fortified- Voiceover: Lived 12 little girls in two straight lines -slow pan over a group of girls, all approximately 16, standing in perfect military precision, decked out in all kinds of weaponry, including wooden stakes and bottles of holy water- Voiceover: They left the house at half past nine -pan of a grandfather clock in front of a window showing that it’s nighttime- Voiceover: In rain or shine -Pouring sleet, giant spotlight cutting through it, shadowy figures skittering out of the beam- Voiceover: The smallest one was Madeline -return to the pan from before, but get all the way to the end of the line of girls, where there’s a six-year-old obvious vampire, even more bristling with weapons than any of the others- ::music with electric guitar and heavy cello starts, flashing scenes of vampires being violently dispatched by this team::

(in which there has been some kind of demon/vampire apocalypse in Paris and Miss Clavel has had to turn her school into an academy for slayers. Madeline, being fearless, was an early casualty, but has become a fully sapient demivampire with all the awesome powers that of course entails, which she uses to fight the evil/feral demonpirezombiemonsters)

The Euthanasia Coaster is a concept for a steel roller coaster designed to kill its passengers. In 2010, it was designed and made into a scale model by Julijonas Urbonas, a PhD candidate at the Royal College of Art in London. Urbonas, who has worked at an amusement park, stated that the goal of his concept roller coaster is to take lives “with elegance and euphoria.” It is a ride to the death. The seven loops or “inversions” put the human body under such stress that it causes the brain to be starved of oxygen, as the heart simply cannot push blood against the enormous g-forces. Even if it kills you, it is designed to still be a fun death. An honourable thought, if rather macabre.

goku: you absolutely under no circumstances should fight goku; however, goku wants to fight you. in the case that you can’t not fight goku, make sure to do it at the martial arts tournament. this way you can just forfeit without injury. or better yet, ask to fight yamcha instead.

naruto: punch that little fucker out. the best part is he’ll use his shadow clone jutsu so you can keep beating him up all afternoon.

gintoki: this is gonna be an easy one to win so go ahead and fight gintoki. just beat his ass no problem. in fact he’ll probably ask you to do it for money, he’s that desperate.

Photographer Walter Sachels was terrified of death, so much so he refused to see his mother after she passed away. Upon entering his 70s, Schels finally decided to overcome his fear through a bold, bizarre project – photographing individuals before and directly after their death.

Schels and his partner Beat Lakotta began approaching potential individuals at hospices in Berlin and Hamburg. The pair were on constant alert, at times running out in the middle of the night to shoot before the undertaker would come.

Though emotionally draining, Schels recognized that the series became an important epitaph to people before they actually died. With family and friends unable to cope with the looming truth, terminally ill patients often feel completely isolated.

“It’s so good you’re doing this”, Schels quoted a dying man to The Guardian, “No one else is listening to me, no one wants to hear or know what it’s really like.”

Schels is no longer terrified of death and now sees avoidance of the issue as a serious problem in contemporary society, people unable to be truly present for loved ones when they need them most. Life Before Death is an attempt to confront our worst fears and perhaps, to see those nearing the end in a more human light. For the individual stories behind each of the portraits click here.
