Okay, but also: if you see a Muslim praying in public and they have something in front of them, like a purse or a bag or something like that, you can pass in front of them, but pass in front of that object.

it’s called a sutrah, and it’s meant to act as a physical barrier between the person praying and someone who might happen to pass in front.

Also, if you did this and didn’t know, please don’t beat yourself up over it. Now you know! Muslims aren’t supposed to pass in front of Muslims praying, either, because prayer is communication with God and you don’t want to break that connection.

Psychosis can mess with critical thinking skills and make completely irrational things seem perfectly logical at times. When a delusion kicks in, it can be very difficult to logic your way out of it.

I periodically think my milk is filled with slugs and larvae, even though I know rationally, that's not the case. Most days, I can work through that by reminding myself that I live with other people who also drink the milk, and if there were bugs in it, someone else would have noticed, so it's more logical that I'm just hallucinating.

However, the worse psychosis gets, the ability to logic like that can become more difficult. I might start thinking things like "they're only pretending to drink the milk to trick me" or something. They're not, and the milk is fine, but... the brain fills in the gaps of the logic with whatever it can to preserve the delusion.

Delusions often sound completely ridiculous on the outside, but when you're in the delusional state, it feels completely rational, often in ways you can't fully explain.

I often come out of delusions and think "how did I think that was real", but… well, brains are mean like that, y'know?

- hijabis get really excited over pretty scarves - they also like to collect pins and brooches - we get asked a lot of questions and it can be annoying or it can be amusing, just depends on our mood and personality and how the question is phrased - common questions include: - “not even water?” (referring to fasting) - hijabis hear a lot of “do you sleep in that?” (we don’t) and “where is your hair?” (in a bun or a braid, usually) - “is it mooze-slim or mozzlem?” (the answer is neither, it’s muslim, with a soft s and accent on the first syllable) - “ee-slam or iz-lamb?” (it’s iss-laam, accent on the first syllable) - “hee-job?” (heh-jahb, accent on the second syllable)

- “kor-an?” (no. quran. say it like koor-annn, accent on the second syllable) - people tend to mess up our names really badly and you just get a sigh and a resigned nod or an awkward smile, maybe a nickname instead - long hair is easy to hide, short hair is harder to wrap up - hijab isn’t just covering hair, it’s also showing as little skin as possible with the exception of face, hands, and feet, and not wearing tight/sheer clothing - that applies to men too, people just don’t like to mention it ( i wonder why) - henna/mehendi isn’t just for special occasions, you’ll see people wearing it for fun - henna/mehendi isn’t just for muslims, either, it’s not a religious thing - henna/mehendi is not just for women, men also wear it, especially on their weddings - there are big mehendi parties in the couple of nights before eid where people (usually just women and kids) gather and do each other’s mehendi, usually just hands and feet - five daily prayers - most muslim kids can stutter through a couple verses of quran in the original arabic text by the age of seven or eight, it does not matter where they live or where they’re from or what language they speak natively - muslim families tend to have multiple copies of the quran - there are no “versions” of the quran, there has only ever been one. all muslims follow the exact same book - muslims have no concept of taking God’s name in vain, we call on God at every little inconvenience - don’t use islamic phrases if you don’t know what they mean or how to use them. we use them often, inside and outside of religious settings. in islam, it is encouraged to mention God often and we say these things very casually, but we take them very seriously - Allahu Akbar means “God is Greatest” (often said when something shocks or surprises us, or if we’re scared or daunted, or when something amazing happens, whether it be good or bad; it’s like saying “oh my god”) - Subhan Allah means “Glory be to God” (i say subhan Allah at the sky, at babies, at trees, whatever strikes me as pleasant, especially if it’s in nature) - Bismillah means “in the name of God” and it’s just something you say before you start something like eating or doing your homework - In Shaa Allah means “if God wills” (example: you’ll be famous, in shaa Allah) (it’s a reminder that the future is in God’s hands, so be humble and be hopeful)

- Astaghfirullah means “i seek forgiveness from Allah” and it’s like “god forgive me” - Alhamdulillah means “all thanks and praise belong to God” and it’s just a little bit more serious than saying “thank god” (example: i passed my exams, alhamdulillah; i made it home okay, alhamdulillah) - when i say we use them casually, i really mean it - teacher forgot to assign homework? Alhamdulillah - our version of “amen” is “ameen” - muslims greet each other with “assalamu alaikum” which just means “peace be on you” and it’s like saying hi - the proper response is “walaikum assalam” which means “and on you be peace” and it’s like saying “you too”

some things to add (for those who are writing Muslim mcs):

clothes are usually loose for modesty

boys are also supposed to be modest too, its not just for girls, there are rules for boys too. ex: pants/shorts cant end above the knees, must be below

alcohol and pork are two of the biggest prohibited things so please DON’T HAVE YOUR MUSLIM MC DRINK OR EAT PORK. PLEASE.

also dont have your Muslim mc rip of her hijab. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. I BEG OF YOU DON’T DO THAT PLEASE. hijab is not there to oppress us. i personally see it as a form of protection, not oppression. hijab is not there to hold us down. that is not its purpose.

Islam is a way of life. let me make this clear. its not something we do once a week and call it a day. its how we live, how we act, what we say, why we make certain choices. it dictates our lives the way a rulebook dictates how you play a game (not the greatest analogy but i couldnt think of a better one). its not something we can “turn off” and we cant “stop using your religion to make decisions.” it doesnt work that way. i’ve had ppl tell me that before, and its extremely hurtful.

we aren’t perfect. your mcs should not be perfect. maybe they lie to their parents, cheat on tests, do all sorts of sins. but they should repent to God and ask for forgiveness for the sins they’ve made. they should try to be better. we as Muslims are always trying to be better to please God so we dont end up in Hell. (because thats scary!!! who wants to go there?? not us!!!)

Disabled nonbinary lesbian needs help getting AC for bedbound mother

Hi guys, I'm in a tough spot and hoping for a miracle.

Tonight, my mom's AC unit completely died. Because of her disabilities, she is extremely temperature-sensitive. The heat is quickly becoming unsafe for her. At the moment, I am a full-time trade school student living on a meager stipend, and between that and her disability benefits, we do not have the funds to buy a new unit or pay for repairs at the moment.

Because of the rules of the building we live in, we cannot use a window unit. We need a portable air conditioner (the floor kind with the hose that vents out the window), which is unfortunately much more expensive. These often cost about $200.

Idk who needs to hear this but do not feel bad after looking at inspirational content on instagram and pinterest that sell you some aesthetic romantisized version of "becoming someone" by picking 4 new niche interests per year and studying them. You are already someone. It is very normal to keep your current hobbies and interests. Barely anyone has time to self study physics or make marble sculptures after their 10 hour shift and certainly most people can't learn yet another language on top of all these. Pick up the unread books that are already in your home or add another line to your WIP, you don't have to become a selftaught rocket science engineer by the end of the year.
