you can’t read a few text posts on tumblr and reblog a couple pictures of black lives matters and think you’re not racist. racism is a deeply engrained part of our culture - sometimes it’s not even conscious. you have to constantly question yourself. it’s pretty hard to unlearn 400+ years of institutional racism and in order for us to properly dismantle systems of injustice, we have to stop pretending we all aren’t part of the problem.

More uplifting during coronavirus outbreak ♥️

Okay I’d love to share my sweet experience too!  I live in Piedmont, north Italy, which is one of the areas where the virus is most spread. My neighborhood is pretty small but it’s still in the city so we’re not so familiar with each others. I live in a street where there are lots of building and families. In my building there’s this guy, Paolo, who lost his mom on the first of January, just at the start of 2020. He’s always been a nice guy but oh boy, he really has outdone himself  now. Everyday since the lockdown started (and it’s already been 24 days here) at 6 p.m and 9 p.m, he opens his windows and start a dj set for about half an hour. I swear that every goddamn person on the balconies goes out and start dancing and singing. He managed to create something beautiful and I realized that because, everytime he stops, you can hear our neighbors yelling “see you later!” or “see you tomorrow!”. People are starting to know each other over the balconies. They wait patiently ‘till this two moments of the day and they get so happy after that.  When I go out with my dog I often find notes on our interphone like “Dj Paolo, please, can you put on this song for me? Thanks, your neighbor from n.7″ or “Paolo please, can you put on some disco? It’s saturday, we’re bored” and so on. It  makes me so happy seeing these kind of notes and I wait for Paolo too.  Today, he made a playlist with cartoon’s songs from our childhood and all the kids we’re so happy and carefree, but it wasn’t just them! All of us were singing Dragonball or Pokemon or Lady Oscar, everyone! Families, college students, grannies with their cats. It melt my heart, I was so emotional.  I met Paolo a few nights ago during our walk with the dogs and thanked him for what he’s doing and he said to me that after his mother died he felt so lonely and miserable even when he was surrounded by friends and relatives, and now he gets people who are lonely or sad these days and wants to help them be happy even for a brief moment. He knows what it means to have someone you care about alone in a hospital and wishes to be able to bring some peace to people.  I’m so glad to have someone like Paolo as my neighbor these days.
