The first scene we see of Ilyukhina, the flash back where she’s smiling and pushing someone lightly and in a joking way really caught my eye. Shes one of my favorite characters in project Hail Mary because of how excited she is to take on the biggest challenge the world has ever faced and in the wake of it being a one way trip, she never fails to make friends and just surround herself with her favorite people. Of the little we know of her, she wants to experience everything head on and that’s super inspiring! I love the au where Ilyukhina is the one that survives the trip to Tauceti and runs into environmental Scientist and communications expert Adrian. I hate it at the same time because she is such a sociable person, finding out her crew and friends have passed on I think would kill her inside (she would also have a similar “drink all the vodka and do drugs” moment like grace which would be super depressing) and in turn, it would cause her to be the one to chase the blip A to look for any kind of connection among the stars so she wouldn’t be alone. Cue Adrian freaking out and trying to fly away lol, you will be her friend there is no escape lol.

Epilogue

Happy Barricade Day! After all, June 6th is the day they made their sacrifice, so I’m not late, right?

The inspiration for this drawing came from the Toledo Cathedral—the sense of the heavens opening up, which also corresponds to the final song of Les Misérables, "Epilogue."

In the painting, I wanted to depict the scene Jean Valjean vaguely sees as he passes away. Fantine takes his hand, leading him toward heaven, while the Bishop stands beside him, illuminating the path behind. And in the background are those who fell during the battle.

The upward composition gives the feeling that their voices fade into the "valley of the light," reflecting their destiny of "climbing to the light." I wanted the darker surroundings to contrast with the light of heaven, showing that they now dwell in that place beyond—echoing the lyric, "We will live again in freedom in the garden of the Lord."

Jehan loves playing the flute, so perhaps the "distant drums" are sounds he conjures.

Behind Valjean, there is a mural of women—intended to represent the "lovely ladies," along with little Gavroche and his sister Éponine above. These figures embody the suffering people of the earth, much like the lyrics of "Wretched of the Earth."

On the heavenly side of the mural are two elderly men: the Parliament G and Mabeuf. Finally, the little angels surrounding the Bishop are Gavroche’s younger brothers.

He repeated: "Long live the Republic!" crossed the room with a firm stride and placed himself in front of the guns beside Enjolras.

"Finish both of us at one blow," said he.

And turning gently to Enjolras, he said to him;

"Do you permit it?"

Enjolras pressed his hand with a smile.

This smile was not ended when the report resounded.

Enjolras, pierced by eight bullets, remained leaning against the wall, as though the balls had nailed him there. Only, his head was bowed.

Grantaire fell at his feet, as though struck by a thunderbolt.”

This animatic was created as part of my honours year at university studying Animation! I specialised in Storyboarding, and wanted to board this scene as practice. Creative liberties were taken for the sake of dramatisation, such as there being more bodies in the actual cafe than there probably was then. Either way I hope people enjoy this

i see a lot of "movie rocky was just kind of a freak after being left alone for 50 years" but what abput the far funnier option which is that he was always just a freaky fucking nudist guy and when he was chosen for the trip everyone was like "dude. no. no way. why would you put the guy who wont wear pants in the ship with us. what the hell"

Project Hail Mary means so much to me 😭. After watching the movie on opening weekend, I immediately started drafting this illustration and got a ticket to watch it again on IMAX. A 2-week vacation put a pause to working on the piece, but I'm so glad to finally finish and be able to share it! I wanted to memorialize the colors and feelings of my favorite moments and the art turned out exactly how I was picturing it in my head 🥹. It feels rare and special for that to happen!
