Hi! Welcome to my multi-fandom/media sideblog. Includes things I don’t watch but think are cool. The blogger is a millennial so technically this is a 21+ blog

I mainly play Final Fantasy 14 and Genshin Impact. 

I also play ikemen sengoku and honkai star rail (sometimes)

how must the Dick -> Jason Robin switch have looked to the Gotham Rogues. it's not as if they did a formal 'attention, Robin has quit his job and will now be operating as Nightwing' announcement. like after a certain point it must have become like a Known Thing that periodically Batman gets new sidekicks. but that first changeover must have messed w people's heads right??

like. you are a B-list Gotham Rogue. You haven't seen Robin in months. You've asked around and no-one else in the circles you move in has seen him either. You're starting to get worried but you aren't sure if you have the kind of relationship with the Batman where it would be appropriate to ask after his sidekick's wellbeing. Every time he shows up Robin-less you get progressively more stressed out.

B-Lister: ..................I rob banks and do museum heists and you know all my methods are non-lethal, so yeah I care??

B-Lister: I don't want your kid sidekick dead??

Batman: alright but I don't understand why you assumed he was dead just because he stopped being Robin.

B-Lister:

B-Lister: he disappeared for months and then you partnered up with a similar looking kid in the same costume, do you have any idea how creepy this whole situation looks from the outside??

Jason, who's been standing off to the side throughout this entire interaction: I'm getting kind of uncomfortable

B-Lister: ...yeah that's fair I'll shut up

It occurred to me today that you can use Miyazaki films as a really quick way to explain the difference between urban/modern fantasy and magical realism.

Kiki’s Delivery Service: takes place in the regular world— albeit at some nebulous point in time— but also magic is real and witches are a thing. Witches exist in this world because it’s fun and we like them. It’s fantasy elements in a familiar setting— essentially urban or modern fantasy.

Porco Rosso: takes place in an extremely specific place and time and contains exactly one fantastical element— Marco’s pig head— which is never given an explanation and is never questioned as a biological impossibility. It’s clearly a metaphor and commentary on a real world issue but it’s also very much literal. This dude 100% has a pig head. No other mentions of magic are made. This is magical realism.

This story brought to you by the fact that I’ve never seen a fanfic on ao3 tagged magical realism that wasn’t actually modern fantasy.

didnt want to be annoying on that person's post but I wish we could explore all those Story Themes of dawntrail outside of pure inference and reading meaning into it. even like just a little. it is actually insane that we don't learn anything about zoraal ja and GJJ's relationship prior to OR EVEN REALLY AFTER zoraal ja committing fucking patricide? its so baffling and it genuinely makes me agree with the late 11th hour rewrite theories about why dawntrail is like that, like even an editing pass should have caught that

and GJJ being a shitty parent is fine to explain some of the weird story shit (like wuk lamat being ignorant of most turali culture despite living near them her whole life) but to be honest I need the story to actually explore that instead of using it as a post facto explanation you know?

im not disagreeing with the post necessarily because I think it has interesting ways to look at it but at best it seems like a coincidence that these plot elements lined up over any intention of the writing team

the zoraal ja thing is especially baffling in context of the story exploring his own (bad) relationship with his son. it's such a gimme character & story parallel that it's stunning it was completely absent lol

RIGHT? As a point of comparison, HW made sense not to delve too much into Aymeric’s potential daddy issues bc a lot of it can be inferred just from the fact that Thordan is not exactly an upstanding guy. You don’t even really need to go into how Aymeric feels about his father to explain why he’s willing to go against him because all we need to know is that he largely grew up away from his influence and had good reason to commit patricide-by-wol. But giving us GJJ who by all other accounts was the bestest guy to have ever existed as a father and ruler, AND he’s positioned as a good guy by the narrative (meaning we’re primed to take his side), having his son do a 180 on his family with zero explanation is just so….narratively disappointing.

. I know I’m preaching to the choir here but. Even some nice little foreshadowing in the first half of Dawntrail by way of stories about GJJ that dropped little hints that he wasn’t the perfect father, like maybe he focused too much on his kingdom sometimes. Maybe he didn’t do a great job integrating the adopted kids with ZJ. Idk or even slip in some stories about how each kid could have evolved their potential ruling style/ideals. Or even if we’re going with that ZJ just decided he hated everyone for no reason, give us some stories from Wuk Lamat’s perspective about how he was a bit of a bully or something. Anything but painting this picture of “wow everyone here is so happy and nothing goes wrong!!!”

I was wondering why I wasn't getting as invested in as many shows as lately, and it occured to me that it's just become my reflexive assumption that any show I'm interested in is going to be cancled before it manages to finish. Like I was legit trawling through for some interesting things to watch with my partner: A modern adaptation of 40,000 leagues under the sea, a prerevolutionary france conspiracy thriller, a really slick mystery drama. I watched the trailers and thought "why haven't I heard of this, this seems like exactly my thing?" Turns out each and every one of them was cancled (sometimes before the first season even aired) because they didn't get good viewership numbers or the company was looking to write them off as a loss for tax purposes. ... it's unsustainable right? Constant disapointment is going to train an audience not to engage with new things because they don't want to get emotionally tied up in a story that's never going to complete. Do that long enough and you're going to end up with people who aren't willing to give ANYTHING new a shot until it's gotten at least a few seasons under its belt. Consider it a counterpoint to the same forces causing marvel fatigue, where people check out because the media they were invested in has been so overproduced (both in terms of the amount to watch and in how many edges are sanded down) that they lose all interest.
