CAREFUL AS TO NOT REVEAL THE TRUTH OF HER IDENTITY, Brianna had grown accustomed to always choosing her words wisely. Rarely did her lips part without thorough deliberation. Her mother’s stories had prepared her well, even if they were not told with the INTENTION of being taken as advice.
Now, after months in Florence and with no apparent way back to her own time ( none that she knew of, at least ) she was beginning to loosen her SELF-IMPOSED RESTRAINTS. If she was stuck here for life, she might as well ENJOY it ——— and the easiest way to do so was by entering the social life, no matter how different it was to that of the twentieth century.
“ I like watching HISTORY being made. ” One of the few truths she’d spoken in the last months, and it rolled easily off the tongue, accompanied by a small smile. “ Do you? ”

“ FORGIVENESS WON’T CHANGE WHAT HAS HAPPENED———- but it can change what will be. ” Whether her words would offer much comfort or solace was ANYBODY’S GUESS, but it was all Brianna had in her possession to give. That, and a smile.
Perhaps she’d crossed a line. The Prince seemed to be a quiet, private type of person who seemed to care little about SOCIAL EVENTS such as this one ———— that was what Brianna had gathered over her time in Moscow, anyway. ( Which, IN FAIRNESS, hadn’t been very long. )
Perhaps an HONEST STATEMENT would sit better with him than the empty words others would often share. Or perhaps NOT.

SHE EXPECTED IT TO BE DIFFICULT————— meeting the man who fathered her. Despite her mother’s various reassurances that Jamie loved her very much, a minuscule part of her had feared that he would REJECT her. At the very same time, a different part of Brianna still felt loyal to Frank, and felt as though any attempts to bond with her real father would be seen as a betrayal to the man who raised her.
( What Brianna hadn’t expected was the ease with which she could sit with Jamie, either engaged in conversation or in silence. )

I was right.
THERE WAS NO DOUBT IN BRIANNA’S MIND She knew she was no longer at Craigh Na Dun. The stones were still here, true, but it’s surroundings had changed. The landscape was vastly different from Inverness where there had once been mountains and fields as long as the eye could see, there was now ocean and cliffs. Was it possible the stones had multiple functions, and that time travel was not its sole talent? Could they have transported her here wherever here was?
She hadn’t walked for very long before the sound of horse hooves came upon her, which quickly turned into the form of a sole rider approaching her from behind. Brianna greeted the woman with a nod and a careful smile, wary of any and all strangers now that she had no idea where she was.
“ I apologise if I have trespassed, Miss. I seem to have gotten LOST. ” She’d figure out her story later, so a vague explanation would have to do for now.

Not even in my dreams of her, few as those had been, had I ever seen Brianna at the Ridge. And yet … against all odds, here she was. Despite the reason for her coming, I was overjoyed to see her again, and perhaps even happier to see her together with Jamie. I smiled to myself at the memory, then looked at Bree and the smile grew wider. She would have to return to the future eventually, but I meant to enjoy every moment we had together in the meantime. As she rested her head against my shoulder, I reached out to caress her hair.
“ Why, thank you, darling. The job is only just starting, though. ”
it was certainly different from the boston brownstone she’d grown up in, but brianna appreciated its simplicity. a house, with its four walls and a steady roof. what else could her mother and jamie want or need ? from what she could tell they were content as long as they had each other.
❛ what’s next on the agenda, then ? hot tub on the patio ? ❜ she teased, bashful grin reaching from ear to ear. despite her happiness at being reunited with claire, it was in her company brianna realised truly how much she’d missed her. in boston she’d had her school work to dig into, thus successfully ignoring the pain that came losing her mother. she realised at the very same time that she wouldn’t have asked her to stay, were they given the chance to do it all over again. it was clear that this was where her mother belonged; her eyes had a spark they didn’t before and her lovely smiles came more frequently than ever. brianna suspected it had much to do with her father.
her gaze automatically wandered to jamie where he stood across the grounds, busy attending to one of the horses. ❛ —— you weren’t joking when you said i have his hair. ❜

❛ it isn’t easy, his temper is short and his mates are… sleazy. ❜ katherine pauses as she speaks, voice hushed. she knows a good wife would not speak ill of her husband but she cannot help it. this time was supposed to be different!
she knew her husband, knew what he’d done and what he would do. faced for the very first time with the impossible dilemma of whether to save a life and compromise her own, or remain a passive bystander. even if brianna did share the truth with her, would it change anything ? when even her mother’s attempts at changing the future failed, were the any chance hers would succeed ?
the severity of the situation made it impossible to make a decision on the spot, so brianna settled with offering her an empathic smile, attempting to make it clear katherine had a friend in her. ❛ it certainly doesn’t sound easy. the king must be a difficult man to be married to. ❜
