I have a headcanon that Jack Howl is his non-indigenous name because a lot of people keeps mispronouncing it that it lowkey pisses him off so he choose the most basic ass name replacement (jack coz it's just, jack. Howl coz he's a wolf beastman duh)

also I am pretty sure Jack is lowkey twisted from Brother Bear's antagonist Denahi coz 1) his UM is literally changing into a whole ass animal, y'know, a big thing in this movie 2) Denahi's totem is a wolf 3)Jack lives in cold climate

I've been vaguely into lotr recently, bc we’re watching them for my film class, and its made me realize

I've been into lotr before, but I hadn’t seen the movies, so I liked to imagine the elves as like. Deer or wtv

So here’s how I interpreted the main non-Man races until I watched the movies lol 😋

Elves: Deer. I’d always thought they were vaguely deer-like because you think of forests, you think of deer. But specifically the deer you see on two legs, like on trail cams or wtv.

Elves are supposed to be sorta uncanny looking, aren't they? The royals more so, so I’d imagined them as deer. Like this one.

Like w antlers and shit. Glowing eyes. You get the impression they should be on four legs but something abt that is wrong.

Hobbits: Bird. Specifically the kiwi. Bc Hobbits are apparently very very feisty when backed into a corner and kiwi are territorial little shit faces

But also I think. Any small but not tiny bird works. I never imagined them with wings or beaks or the like, bc y’kmow. Hair.

But some kind of odd Kiwi-Meerkat thing. Just fucking weird

Dwarves: Holy shit these are mole people. Like that was my absolute first thought.

Obvi I’d seen dwarves in media b4, who hasn’t. Tolkien’s dwarves specifically felt like mole people.

I fear that’s a point to NRC bc Ortho went to space once and there’s nothing cooler than the world’s cringe failing-est 18 y/o building his robotic younger sister a body that could go to space just because he could

One aspect I wished both twst and the fandom explored more are the consequences of Jack’s actions in book 2, because what he did is basically social suicide.

Guy went against a plan everyone in his dorm, including Leona who he used to idealise, had been on. This plan, as bad as it was, was for a lot of Savanaclaw students their nearly only hope to get scouted and make it as pro. That is ground to give birth to a lot of resentment, and Savanaclaw was shown to be quite the brash dorm, I don’t think they would forgive Jack that easily.

And like… Jack already had issues in Savanaclaw beforehand, seeing how he was targeted by a group of nearly 30 students who wanted to beat him down if he didn’t stop playing for the dorm, and only got away thanks to Leona’s intervention (see Leona’s dorm card vignette, which happens before book 2). And now with Jack being the reason their plan failed, the reason why they lost to Diasomnia again and couldn’t be scouted? Yeah, they are not going to kindly stay put, even if Leona and Ruggie try to step down. To them, Jack is a self-righteous snitch and traitor, and wouldn’t those kind of people deserve the consequences of their actions?

And it’s not like Jack would have it much better outside his dorm, because how many students are aware of how exactly Leona’s plan failed? There was only the Heartslabyul gang and the Diasomnia family in the confidence, so for most of the other students, all of Savanaclaw’s students must have been in it, including Jack. Heck, considering that Jack was in the Spelldrive team and the whole plan was about it, it would make more sense for most students that he was an accomplice.

And sure Jack would still have friends with Yuu, Grim, Ace, Deuce and Epel (and much later Ortho and Sebek). But is it enough when everyone else are against you? When not only your school environment but also the place you live in full of people who resent you and who would be showing it very clearly? When you are the target of endless cruel words and angry violence, because you dared going against an unfair plan that injured people?

The only times I hear all of it being mentioned is usually in first years centric fics, but it’s usually just that. A mention by Jack during some conversation that he isn’t too comfortable at his dorm, but nothing more. No going deeper, no exploring what could be happening to him. And I don’t know, I think it would be an interesting aspect of both his and other characters to explore.

So, recently I saw and very briefly read a fic about Sebek replacing Yuu as the protag of the game.

And you know what that made me think of?

Ace replacing Yuu as the protagonist :))

The year starts the same, of course. Ace gets to NRC, Grim crashes the ceremony, but. There’s no Yuu. And Ace feels very, very bad about the dorm he’s been sorted into.

The first day is mostly the same as well—Ace antagonizes Grim, Grim burns a statue, they get in trouble, Deuce gets involved, the Mines.

Until Ace gets back to Heartslabyul and eats that tart.

Riddle kicks him out, as usual.

But Ace doesn’t know where to go—he doesn’t have any friends here, he doesn’t know where to go at all.

So he wanders. Just walks around campus because, well, what else do you do when your only place to stay is violently ripped away.

Eventually, he stumbles upon Ramshackle, and when he gets inside? There’s Grim, shaking in fear and freezing in the drafty building. There are scorch marks on a fireplace he doesn’t know how to light, the couch he’s on is in rough condition, and the laughs in the air make Ace’s stomach curdle in faint terror.

So Ace takes pity on him. Cradles Grim in his arms like he’s a baby, tries to push away the fear and the cold and the terror at his newfound solitude.

When Ace gets to school, Grim in hand because he can’t just leave Grim alone, Deuce asks where the hell he went. Why Riddle won’t answer, or doesn’t seem concerned that Ace doesn’t technically have anywhere to go aside from Heartslabyul, why Deuce couldn’t find him and where Grim came from.

Ace tells him, very plainly, everything he needs to know. Outlines that, though Heartslabyul is his dorm, he won’t be attempting to return until Riddle gets over himself.

The story continues. Ace tries to apologize, the replacement tart, Riddle kicking Deuce out too—and, truth be told, Ace only wants the collar off and to never have to associate with Riddle ever again.

The Overblot happens, of course it does. They manage to defeat Riddle, manage to get him to apologize, and.

And Ace refuses to come back to Heartslabyul.

In fact, he’s quite happy to remain in Ramshackle and ignore Riddle entirely, and Riddle feels quite terrible about that.

Crowley drags his feet accepting Ace’s request to transfer dorms, until Ace threatens to get his parents involved, and then Ace is Ramshackle’s first official student in centuries.

He gets Grim established as a familiar because Crowley won’t accept him as a student.

They discover, eventually, that Deuce can’t really take Heartslabyul on his own without getting violent. Ace is usually there to engage in a battle of wits instead of fists, and without that, Deuce can’t do it on his own. Ace gets him transferred, too.

Riddle is horribly guilty, tries his best to indulge Deuce to make up for his treatment of him and Ace.

Deuce’s transfer into Ramshackle has Ace getting promoted to Housewarden of Ramshackle, gets them a bit more funding towards repairs because they’re an actual dorm now.

So they start fixing themselves up, changing Ramshackle. Making friends with the ghosts. Becoming a proper dorm.

And then comes Leona’s overblot. And then comes Jack. And then comes the rest of the story.

N e ways I don’t have any ideas for what to call this au 😋.

Idk if I’ve said this before

But gang I do NOT trust people who dislike Neige or unironically think she’s evil, or people who hate Rook after chap 5

For one, the whole VDC was kinda a lose-lose situation for Rook, cause on one hand, he votes for his school and Vil thinks it's a biased, pity vote. On the other hand, he votes for RSA and they lose, thus getting Vil mad at him.

And Neige is, genuinely, basically the victim in all of this. She’s just a girl tryna support herself and the seven—count em, SEVEN—kids under her care. She doesn't have any of the protection Vil does, especially not when they were kids.

Probs one of her very few protections is that she is so cute that no one can think of exploiting her like that. Type casting at its finest. She and Vil are genuinely just the same in that regard.

I completely understand Vil’s frustration, believe me, but hating Neige for just being the victim and blaming Rook for what had to be a ridiculously hard decision is genuinely ridiculous.
