The Angel and the Nightingale
A Summer Omens Big Bang collab by @maon25 (art) and me (story)
Read here on AO3 (G, 8k)
Look at all the amazing art by @maon25 :
In chapter 5 🔝
In chapter 2 🔝
In chapter 1 🔝
Summary:
It’s summer once more in Kensington Gardens.
The white marble statue of an Angel, half hidden under a canopy of trees, is content enough with his life, his animal friends in the park, the here and now.
Until an unusual Black Nightingale lands on his left wing and sings to him stories of woe, of mystery, of a dear friend lost, of his quest to find the love of his life again.
Every summer, the Nightingale, who remembers only fragments of what really happened to himself and his long-lost soulmate, revisits the Marble Angel, having gathered more hints and ✨Clues✨ to help his quest. The Angel’s marble heart melts with empathy for him, and with other feelings that seem new - but are they?
~~~
This is a romantic fairytale, inspired by Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Happy Prince’, retelling Good Omens in symbolic language.
WIP Wednesday - Summers at Northwoods (M) by @bohoteacher
Aziraphale arrives at the Northwoods writing retreat in 2016 and unexpectedly forms a close connection with Crowley. When he arrives, Crowley has made up his mind to marry his manager Shax. The two writers become inseparable each summer that follows and stay in touch in between. Crowley doesn't have to know Aziraphale feels more than friendship, right? Some love stories are tumultuous, like a summer storm on the ocean. This one is like paddling down a lazy river. It's beautifully paced, and gently written. This story updates regularly. But, if you don't read WIPs, make sure you bookmark or subscribe so you don't miss out when it's complete (I'll mark it complete on the pinned post on this site too). Let our wonderful writers know how much we appreciate their efforts. Leave kudos and comments to keep our fandom community strong.
One Last Hurrah
My Summer Omens Bang fic started posting today - a human AU about a summer holiday fling in Valencia. I got matched with one of my favourite artists @alwaystuesday who did an amazing piece of traditional art - look out for it later this week in Chapter Six, here's a teenie slice:
Chapters 1 and 2 out now, posting every day until it's finished (10 chapters).
One Last Hurrah (4144 words) by AlwaysTuesdayToday, Thinkinginscripts Chapters: 2/10 Fandom: Good Omens - All Media Types Rating: Mature on AO Summary: Aziraphale Fell had given up his job at Oxford to take up a new position at the family publishing firm. But he's weary. So when cousin Gabriel recommends a holiday in the summer break - one last hurrah before he gets down to his new career - Aziraphale jumps at the chance, and books a solo trip to see the historic sites of the Spanish city of Valencia. He doesn't count on his tour guide being a charming, gorgeous redhead with a track record of no-strings flings. Still - it's his last hurrah, just a week of fun in a romantic city. Where was the harm in that? Have a look at the Summer Omens Big Bang collection on AO3 and @gosummerbang - twelve collabs have started posting already, with lovely work by @bohoteacher, @hazel-sage, @maon25, @naturallyteal, @on1occasionfork, @luinlothana. @pietudraws, @anixfelix, @anatomic-girl and lots more!
Planet Earth Turns Slowly (G, 6k, canon) is a story about the last Saturday of the summer break - with only one school year to go before the dreaded apocalypse.
The antichrist is coming home from summercamp, but unfortunately neither his parents nor the usual babysitters are available to welcome the boy home. The Dowlings have asked the tutors - Mr Cortese and Mr Harrison - to be the welcome committee instead.
This sunny afternoon we follow Aziraphale (Mr Cortese) around; who has some ideas on how to celebrate the last Saturday of summer with Warlock.
Crowley (Mr Harrison) on the other hand, has to first get rid of another demon before he can enjoy the last of summer with his angelic counterpart. This story was written for the @gosummerbang Many thanks to my collab partner @screamingperil for the beautiful art! 💛 And to @bohoteacher and @thinkinginscripts for beta-ing! 💛
Chapter 2 is out! With more art by @maon25 :
Excerpt:
“Your destiny moves me, and I want to help, but I don’t know how. Can you not tell me a little more? Why did the wizard cast that spell, and what is your mate’s name?”
The answer came with a heart wrenching hitch from the throat of the little bird:
“Aziraphale! His name is Aziraphale!”
The Angel’s marble heart stuttered at this, he felt quite overwhelmed by an immense sadness. No matter how many fantastic elements this story contained, there was definitely a core of truth here. No poetic licence could account for the deep grief the Black Nightingale was clearly, authentically, feeling; and the Angel felt it as though it was his own.
“My name is Crowley,” the bird went on, “and we were human-shaped beings, before that day of doom. […]”
🌲Summers at Northwoods🌲 by Bohoteacher
A new story written for Summer Omens Big Bang
Artwork by @becky-7750 (used with permission)
For ten summers, famed sci-fi author Anthony J Crowley and literary darling Aziraphale Fell return to Northwoods, a prestigious writing institute tucked beside a Minnesota lake.
Every year they sit on the same dock and watch the herons.
Year after year, their friendship becomes the fixed point around which both their lives quietly turn.
Crowley spends a decade believing Aziraphale is his best friend.
Aziraphale spends a decade believing Crowley will never love him back.
They are both wrong.
A story about friendship becoming love, summer traditions, patient birds, one very important dock, and two middle-aged idiots who take ten years to figure out what they mean to each other. This is a human AU featuring mutual pining, middle-aged romance, and a happy ending.
My heartfelt thanks to @thinkinginscripts for helping me figure out what story I really wanted to tell. Somewhere along the many conversations we had about it I realized that, beneath the writing institute, the lake, and ten summers of friendship, this was ultimately a love story.
Thank you as well to @thinkinginscripts and @maon25 for beta reading and much thoughtful feedback throughout the writing process.
With thanks to @gosummerbang for creating this bang space for us 💛 and to @becky-7750 for this beautiful illustration.
Another behind the scenes of GO3
Echoes (T, 12k, human/fantasy AU) is a spooky / mystery Good Omens story. It's set in a library where weird things start to happen. The next 24 hours will proof to be weird, a tad scary and eye opening at the same time. This was written for the @au-roulette challenge. Many thanks to @naturallyteal for his help and @bohoteacher and @thinkinginscripts for beta-ing. 💛
Summer is here - and so (almost) is the posting window of
Summer Omens Big Bang! -starting July 1st-
It’s teaser time:
The Angel And The Nightingale (exerpt:)
The Angel asked the Black Nightingale, “Hello there, Nightingale, you look very exhausted, is there anything I can do to help you? Are you new in this neighbourhood, do you need advice where you can find water, shelter, or food?”
The Black Nightingale regarded him wistfully and began to tell him a story.
In this summer-themed big bang organised by @gosummerbang , I’ve written an 8 k fairytale for general audiences, inspired by Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Happy Prince’. We’ll start posting in a few days!
To read this story and view the full version of this and further, stunning illustrations by maon25, subscribe to me on AO3, or follow me here for updates. In any case, make sure to follow @gosummerbang to see all the amazing collaborations that will emerge from this bang during the next weeks!
Summer Omens Big Bang - nearly here
The SOBB starts posting next week! 30 fics+art collabs with a summer theme will start appearing soon! For my fic, which is about a summer holiday fling in Valencia, Spain, I got matched with a fantastic artist, @alwaystuesday - who produced an amazing piece of traditional art of Crowley. Here's a wee snippet of my words, and their art:
As if woken by the direction of his thoughts, Crowley’s leg slid down the length of his and, with a deep inhale, the man turned his head on the pillow and looked across at Aziraphale. He saw the moment Crowley came to full consciousness, as those unfocused amber eyes suddenly zeroed in on him and a slow, gentle smile bloomed across his face. He looked relaxed, content.
I'll be posting in a couple of weeks, but lots of people will be going live next week - follow the @gosummerbang and tags below! And if you want to see more of @alwaystuesday's art like this, there's more here and here
Returning to Survival is Insufficient Without Love (A Series of Post-Apocalypse Vignettes)
A year ago, for @au-roulette I received the prompt combination of "post-apocalyptic + crossover + western" and I wrote Survival is Insufficient Without Love (A Series of Post-Apocalypse Vignettes). It's a Good Omens AU inspired by Emily St John Mandel's Station Eleven, wherein Crowley survives the Georgia Flu in the Sierra Nevada mountains and Aziraphale travels the shattered landscape of Northern California trading stories for meals.
This year, AU Roulette somehow dealt me post-apocalyptic again 😆. And, rather than fight fate, I decided to lean into it.
The new prompt, post-apocalyptic & classic literature, immediately made me think of Aziraphale as The Storyteller. I decided to revisit this story and remembered all the things I'd loved about that world: stories as survival, rebuilding community, gardens, books, printing presses, and most importantly two lonely people finding each other after the end of the world.
So instead of starting from scratch, I've written a short sequel.
The Storyteller's Hour
I thought I would share the original story again on Tumblr for anyone who would like a refresher (or who missed it the first time around). The sequel maybe can stand on its own, but I think it will mean more if you've spent a little time in this world first.
The sequel features Aziraphale in his role as storyteller once more, along with a certain beloved work of classic literature.
I didn't expect to return to this world, but I'm so very glad that I did.
Please don't be put-off by the post-apocalyptic tag, this series is mostly just a sweet love story.
Many thanks to @thinkinginscripts and @maon25, my first readers, whose encouragement, enthusiasm, and friendship make fanfic writing all the more enjoyable.
Time after time...
Supportive husband 😊
Legolaziraphale & the rebel. 😊
