I found this novel had quite the hook, I was unable to put it down & spent all night reading it. However I would advise discretion because I felt the amount of sex to be uncomfortable. Had I known there would be so much - although it doesn’t go into too much detail - I wouldn’t have read it. Aside from that it was a good read & I would definitely recommend it to those who have read books such as Game of Thrones.
I was given a free copy of this book from the author via voraciousreadersinly.com. I had previously read the reviews on goodreads & thought I would enjoy this book however I unfortunately did not. I stopped reading at chapter 5 because I felt the writing style was clunky & repetitive which is a shame because the concept was cleverly thought out. A little disappointed in this one.
Write about a subject you know nothing about with the most detail possible. Bonus points if you act like you know exactly what you’re talking about, and your narration is that of a smarmy college professor who’s “never wrong.” The more innacurate, the better.
Isn’t this just mansplaining?
It’s time to live. No more teen angst bullshit. Tomorrow might be my day to join The Dead Queens Club. Today I’m going to be Shameless. - Hannah Capin, the Dead Queens Club. What to say about this book… it was interesting, to say the least. I thought it was an awesome premise and certainly up my alley in the history department. It looked really promising and who doesn’t love a high-school murder type plot (I’m looking at you ‘Heathers’)? Unfortunately the timeline was confusing, it got so messy that I was unaware at times whether I was following the past or present. I knew exactly where I was, as Capin is fantastic at world-building, as to when I was however, I often had no idea until the end of a chapter. The murder mystery plotline seemed too much like the characters were stumbling into clues rather than actively searching for them and the main character, Cleves, changes sides so frequently that I was unsure whether she was rooting for the killer or not until the very end. All in all, I thought this book was good enough to finish but I probably won’t read it again.
Cats are beautiful, mysterious animals. But let’s face it, it’s not like they have a great reputation. You can’t really trust them. They have a dual nature that can be unpredictable. They look all soft and cuddly, then they show their claws when you least expect it - Zoe Kalo, Daughter of the Sun. I received a free copy of this book from voracious readers only.com and it was surprisingly really good! It had a couple pacing issues at the end but I’m excited to learn more about Trinity, Ara & the Island of cats. It has magic, mystery & just the right amount of intrigue. Plus a little love on the side. I will definitely be picking up the second instalment of the cult of the cat series when it drops!
A life worth dying for is a life worth living after all - Rin Chupeco, The Shadow Glass
The Final book in the Bone Witch trilogy managed to unravel all of the complexities of the first and second books while still remaining as well written and interesting as its predecessors. While there were some plot twists that were easily predicted, Chupeco still managed to surprise me at every turn. Not only did The Shadow Glass circle cleanly back to the beginning, where the bard first meets Tea, but it also cleanly brought the story to a close. A very well-done series I would definitely read again.
Kindness makes the best of commanders and the finest of soldiers - Rin Chupeco, The Heart Forger
The Heart Forger is just as wonderfully composed as The Bone Witch as the reader continues to jump between past and present, solving the mystery of Tea's heartsglass. In fact, I would argue that this book is much better than the first. Weaving in new politics and love interests as Tea grows older, Chupeco allows for a storyline growing in complexity and adding new elements to an already fantastic storyline. I honestly cannot wait to read the final book!
Let me be clear: I never intended to raise my brother from his grave, though he may claim otherwise. If there’s anything I’ve learned from him in the years since, it’s that the dead hide truths as well as the living - Rin Chupeco, The Bone Witch The Bone Witch was an unforgettable book with well-rounded, Three-dimensional characters I rooted for the entire way. Chupeco tells Tea’s story through clever contrast of past and present which entices the reader to know more about Tea’s journey as an Asha of the Willows. While it is certainly not the end of this journey, I am excited to keep reading and find out the truth behind what happened to Tea and her friends.
