Knowing a fic author through AO3 is like attending someone’s thesis presentation and politely clapping at the end, knowing a fic author through this hellsite is like going over to their house at 3AM to watch them eat mayonnaise out of a jar
Sometimes I attend somebody’s thesis presentation and I’m so impressed that I follow them home to watch them eat mayonnaise out of a jar at 3am.
Sometimes I watch someone eat mayonnaise out of a jar at 3am with such fervour I am compelled to attend their thesis presentation
I saw @cowboylikeyouu (who I saw this post from) 's name on a fic the other day while scrolling new winterhawk and got kinda excited like oh man I kinda know that person!
We're not even mutuals on this account but I live a double life and we are elsewhere so I promise this isn't as weird as it seems... 🙃
People who are able to write multichaptered fics and not get sick of your own idea or spoil everything in chapter 1 or lose motivation or forget about it, teach me your secrets
I'll just leave these here... they're not really secrets
Outline with some wiggle room. Room for details, room to add, and room to reorder.
Make a running gag like an inside joke for yourself that you want to keep up (it can be something small and insignificant or crucial to a subplot just as long as you like it. And you can always edit it out later if you want)
Write in whatever order you want! Linear writing isn't always the best. Heck if creating art was linear your favorite movies, shows, and series would take forever to make (and sometimes they take forever as is)
As for not spoiling—screw that! Drop some hints, foreshadowing is beautiful. You can know the ending by chapter 1 as long as the rest of the story holds people's attention
Plot twists shouldn't change the ending or come out of left field. It's more fun to facepalm and question how you missed the signs as a reader than be thrown for a loop
Get through a few chapters before posting anything. Sometimes a fic just doesn't want to work with you and you might have to abandon it. Save the ideas, you can reuse them in a different story.
The notes on your phone can be useful to jot down ideas on the go. A notebook and pen work too but it's not as organized
Expand on your au. Characters don't have to share all their back stories in the fic. Think up a few misadventures, get invested in the world you have planned. Stretch beyond the plot. Go deeper into who you're writing. You don't have to share everything
World building is your friend. Make up rules, history, animals and plants, legends and myths (not the best for realistic works) Knowing the au world well and getting into it helps a lot with keeping interested
Beta readers and friends to bounce ideas off of are miracles. The best motivators out there.
I need this.
I usually write the start and the end and a few chunks of middle and then have to fill in the gaps. I drive a lot and that's when my ideas come to me. Even if they're ridiculous I note them down and tone up/down depending on the feeling. I often have more than one document as well; the second one for ideas that aren't fully formed so I don't have to meander things around in the main one.
It really depends though. I have a couple WIPs that I've been back and forwards on for YEARS and have just never felt right. Other things I decide on a whim are great and post after writing two chapters knowing there's probably 100k+ words in it for me. That's where engagement really helps - nothing better than having a couple of really consistent commentors, and being able to bounce ideas off someone always really helps keep my focus coz I have a terrible attention span.
I guess being interested in the characters helps too, and not worrying about what other people think too much. The people who like it will find it. I've posted in a few very niche places and get almost nothing back but because I find it fun, I could churn it out all day long.
this really is a humiliating set of nicknames
Been laughing at this for far too long
You ever get that feeling when you're writing something and you just become so consumed by your concept that you forget that the character is actually a full on piece of shit and you become totally unhinged from reality?
If you want to see me do it, and you're into Game of Thrones (the Northerners anyway) we're 65k in with a loooong way to go.

Anyone know what the fuck is wrong with me this time, and can I blame it on ADHD or is that offensive to the rest of the community lmfao?
proud to announce i just wrote a wholesome steve & bucky scene for my winterhawk fic instead of just ignoring steve's existence or making him the villain in their history. i'm maturing 💆🏼♀️
I always make Steve the bad guy too and idk why. Poor Steve.
(It's coz he's boring)
posting niche fic on ao3 is like releasing a small creature into the wild and hoping it survives and finds sustenance
got one whole comment… the small creature may yet survive the winter
Been there. I like when you get really dedicated readers though. You expect nothing to happen and then you have two people commenting on every chapter. Those people are the best.
✨NEW FIC✨
God, dunno what I was thinking with this... NSFW for all the reasons, very long, very work in progress.

Ramsay laughs when Sansa confronts him about it, citing the murder of her brothers as his reason and almost gleefully offering Theon to her.
She leaves him, expecting him to follow. Joffrey would have. He would have pushed and prodded and shouted, but Ramsay just lets her go...
This hit count gives me good vibes

and we wont let the bed bugs bite. we just wanna see you... sleeping
I hate the fact that somewhere, out there, another interest that will change my life again waits for me to discover it but i haven't stumbled upon it yet. It's like a weird limbo
do you guys have tumblr

There's more winterhawk if you like me. And a cherik :)
Fanfic doesn't have to be "good"
Since going through another Goodreads debacle and thinking about reviewing fics, and the amount of criticism of fics I've seen on tiktok recently... I have a few other things I need to say on this topic and entitlement in fandom:
I'm going to say this for the people in the back, and maybe I'm talking to a brick wall, but it is not ever okay to speak negatively about fics in public spaces. It doesn't matter how big or untouchable the author or fic might seem, or alternatively, how small, or how old the work is. That was written by a normal person for fun, with no monetary gain and zero compensation. You have no right to speak on it negatively.
Firstly, everyone has personal opinions and likes, and SECONDLY FANFIC DOESN'T HAVE TO BE GOOD. This might sound controversial, and yes so many fics are actual works of art. I've seen so much talent and labor of love in fandom I'm in awe, but there's no standard fanfic is required to meet. There's no quality threshold, there's no amount of effort you're required to put into it.
If you keep shitting on fics, you're going to scare people away from writing for fear that they're going to write something "bad" or that falls under your criticisms. A lot of fic authors have no formal or professional writing experience or education. And they don't need to! Because this is fanfic, and if it was all professional they'd be in publishing.
So stop shitting on fics, not only is it rude, but you're not owed anything!! You're not owed well-edited, typo-less fics, you're not owed hundreds of thousands of words, you're not owed the characterizations and headcanons you like, you're not owed regular updates or completed works. You have no entitlement or right to any of those things.
You are not owed anything, and you're scaring people away from fanfic and fandom with your negativity and hatefulness. We do this for fun, and it stops being fun when you have to deal with people being cruel, disrespecting you and your work, posting it places you explicitly request they not, pestering you, being rude or entitled, etc, etc. I've had to file an actual copyright claim before over fucking fanfic, and it's moments like that where you have to wonder wtf is happening and why you're doing all this. The climate in fandom has become so entitled and if we keep conducting ourselves this way, we're going to scare people away, and you'll have even less content.
So just remember fic is free and a hobby, and you have no right to demand anything of it.
Fuck yeah they gave it a mech

Part 2 that no one asked for and tbh should never have been written.
Don't thank me for it. I've cast it out there and hope that it's now left my system like some kind of weird unsettling demon.
