every time someone characterizes percy jackson, the character who was literally created FOR disabled kids so they have a positive role model bc every adult in their life is telling them they will never be anything bc of their disability but here's this kid in your favorite book series who's disabled and he's cool and he's street smart and he's regular smart too but he doesn't do well in school because of his disability but that doesn't make him any less smart or useful or anything else, as a dumb guy who needs his girlfriend or mom to guide him through life an angel loses his wings (i’m looking at you RICHARD)
if anyone can come up with a reason why they don't like annabeth/percabeth that isn't rooted in:
- they ship percy with someone else
- vilifying a teenage girl for not being the kindest, sweetest, quietest, most mary jane in general/ actually acting like a teenage girl (teenage girls are MEAN, they're BOSSY, they're LOUD, that's the truth, and what makes them HUMAN) let alone to a girl who liked her crush
- straight up misogyny
- "omg the judo flip scene could've seriously injured him"
- you have a crush on percy so you have to make his actual partner seem bad to rationalize your crush
it will restore my faith in humanity a little more
The idea that the judo flip (correctly called a judo throw) is proof annabeth is toxic/abusive is HILARIOUS to me here’s why:
Guys it’s a martial arts move, specifically Judo, hence the name. Percy has done hand to hand combat both in training and on the field. In book one (1) Clarisse and him are in hand to hand combat training together. He is not and would not be hurt by that. It’s a way of getting someone on the ground. Sure you can put force into it which you would in a real fight annabeth probably dies some but they more also in a stand still position and he’s not fighting her physically back so thus would not have had just about any force in it besides her knee on his chest after he’s down. I didn’t know what it looked like until I just now googled cause I was curious. And I know for certain more tha half of anyone making the claim she could’ve hurt him/was trying to hurt him/blah blah have not seen what it looks like either.
Literally look it up it’s not grabbing by his arm and flying him in the air over her head which is how I imagined it which never made sense to me of how that would work. Bc that’s not how it works, there’s a ton of different throws/flip to use rr word from beginner to advanced they’re all relatively low to the ground move because again the point is to get the opponent to the ground. Assuming she used a more advanced move he very well have made it properly over her shoulder. But he would Not have been hurt.
This move is not MEANT to be the main attack, it can be an attack or a form of defense but it solely and completely a method of getting someone on the ground—I did read google on this one I’m not ai-ing I just LITERALLY typed it in the youtube and google search bars it took 2 seconds plz for the love of fuck I’m seriously—it is WILD to me that that’s even a question let alone an argument some ppl take seriously or believe. I knew it was a martial arts technique from 1st time reading based on the word Judo and have know a ton of ppl who have done several types of martial arts while they all have their own rules much of it is hand to hand not always completely.
And, just, let’s remember the context one more time and Percy’s reaction. Now I don’t like annabeths internal monologue that rr gave her that she sounds somewhat dependent on him which a few lines earlier she mentions how strong her emotions got I think rr made her sound codependent. But I want to point out that THEY BOTH rushed Towards each other, they mutually kissed, and he laughed about it once on the ground. Also I need ppl to let these characters have complex emotions annabeth feeling rage in this moment has been eating her alive for like 10 1/2 months. Whether they’re misplaced on percy in this moment is reasonable complex question to ask and analyze but it’s not wrong for her to feel that way and it’s not wrong for her to express it either. And Percy is SOO CHILL in this scene this is the very tone of their entire arc of relationship. Lighthearted, bantering, and a foundation of trust built on years of working through stuff.
Guys he is so fucking chill in this scene he is not one bit hurt, has no fear or irritation that he could’ve been hurt and every understanding that she wouldn’t have hurt him by flipping him and that wasn’t her intention and I guarantee that’s all subconscious for him he doesn’t have to think about that.
Also annabeth is STILL 16 in this book and barely 17 a month later she is still a kid and 119% allowed to have emotions, ‘girl emotions’ are invalidated every moment of a girls life Especially as a teenager when you’re expected by society to be more mature,
Let this child girl have big emotions that aren’t perfect sweet doting on her bf
She’s not toxic actually, kick rocks
Also I will never forgive richard for using the word ‘giddily’ gross use of an adverb how dare he—so many other words and potential descriptions lost to carelessness and time🥀🥀👎
