It’s the job of an artist to do what they love, in the form they feel expresses them the best
A writer will write. It’s gonna be texts or poems or stories or a simple phrase and a lyric that spoke to them or a book that made them feel things. They’re gonna write what makes them feel better, what makes them passionate, what releases pressure from their chest. And they will not explain why.
An artist will draw. It’s gonna be oils or acrylics or pens or digital work or mixed mediums or trash they made at home and decided to use for a project, or paper or wood or literally anything that inspires them. Maybe they’ll sculpt instead of drawing today. Maybe they’ll put a giant X on a blank canvas. Maybe that speaks to them, maybe that puts their vision out there, their feelings out there. And they will not explain why.
A musician will write and play songs. They will write lyrics that speak to them, music that makes their heart soar, that makes them cry, that makes them smile. They will add an instrument they’ve never played before and they’ll scream towards the end of their instrumental. AND THEY WILL NOT EXPLAIN WHY.
BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE TO. BECAUSE IT’S ART. BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT THEY WANT TO DO.
When an artist of any kind decides to share with you their work, especially in tumblr-esque spaces where it comes for free, they do not have absolutely any obligation to explain why they did anything.
They can write a poem today. They can sculpt an original character instead of an already existing fictional one. They can write punk instead of country. They can test the waters with a new ship, a new medium, a new style, a new instrument, or even an old one.
It’s not for you. It’s for them. There is no ‘Why?’.
