sometimes i have strong opinions but they're also so inane that halfway through writing a post i'll be like "yeah, this is Absolutely not worth the energy it's taking" and delete everything. but then the opinion is still in my head. and i still want to share it. so within five minutes i go "you know, i bet i can phrase it more succinctly this time" and anyway. you all see where this is going. sometimes i do this four times in a row before i give up on the specific inane opinion and instead write a vague post about the concept of opinions as if that'll satisfy the urge to post the entirety of my inner monologue online. may or may not be relevant to what you're reading right now. and now all our lives have been enriched. you're welcome

#the good place is just. I don’t even know how to express my feelings but #as a piece of entertainment it is brilliantly funny and fascinating and clever and inventive and fantastical and relatable and human #and as a piece of cinema it is deeply philosophical and contemplative and moving and (to me at least) just groundbreaking #idk if tv is ever called ‘cinema’ but I am using this word to indicate that this tv series has a literature-like value to me #what it contributes to the ongoing conversations that human beings have been having about ethics and morality and relationships and #the meaning of life is profound and has inspired a lot of reflection for me #and those contributions and messages are packaged in such a compelling way through these characters and their stories #seeing selfish Eleanor become selfless. anxious chidi become confident. jealous tahani become compassionate. impulsive Jason become patient.#and then both Michael and Janet—non-human characters—become so human in the ways that truly matter #the way it both defends the viewer for being imperfect in an imperfect world and also inspires them to do and be better despite it all #wough. it’s just so good #the good place #tgp

This is - legitimately - my favourite delivery of Shakespeare I have EVER seen (and I have seen some good-ass productions yo, in the Globe Theatre itself even). Like seriously, even though the words are unchanged, he’s stripped away ALL of the archaic pretense and assumed grandeur of ~presenting the bard~ that makes even the most wildly talented of actors and innovative of productions inherently inaccessible to a modern audience. Like, they’re still great, they can still communicate the message and (some) of the nuance, but they’re still always a step removed from being identifiable to any viewer’s lived experience. They’re still always reciting 15th century poetry. But this guy? This guy is like, screw iambic pentameter, to hell with being precious about the material, HOW WOULD AN ACTUAL PERSON SAY THIS SHIT?

Like this. And it’s beautiful. It’s beautiful to hear a soliloquy I loved so much already, and have it come to life in a way it never, ever, did before. I feel like I grasp his motivations, his twists and turns, no longer on an academic level but on a visceral, instinctive one. Because he’s presenting his mental and emotional journey in a way that speaks honestly, like a real person.

So yeah, this shit post? I love it. Deeply and sincerely.
