Leto and her children, Apollo and Artemis
I finished reading Emily Wilson’s translation of the Odyssey a while back and what really struck me was the weight and longevity of Odysseus, Telemachus, and Penelope’s grief. Athena remarks that Odysseus cries every day while he’s on Calypso’s island, longing for home. He weeps multiple times during his journey - the ache never lessens. Telemachus feels “a desperate need to mourn his father” when Menelaus speaks of Odysseus’s suffering. And Penelope is hardly mentioned without a description of her tears, rarely sleeping unless a god pours sweet sleep over her eyes. Over twenty years, they never stop missing each other. Over twenty years, the distance between husband and wife is never easier to bear. Over twenty years, they love each other and that love has nowhere to go, and so their grief is relentless.
just. Man. You really have to love someone to suffer their loss so badly. I’ve never seen or read or experienced anything that comes close. Just. The Odyssey man.

So Austin Chant has an actual like…an official playlist of theirs for “Peter Darling” on Spotify. (You can find it here if you’re interested in listening~)
But anyways, the song “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men is on the playlist, and I’m listening to it while drawing some fanart of the book, and I realized…if you listen to it closely with a fresh perspective, you can almost hear the conversation of the song as a trans person talking themself through a hard time.
In the song you hear two voices go back and forth, talking about one of them missing the other and not being sure of the path ahead, or if they’re even actually alone. The actual given context of the song is that it’s a wife talking to her dead husband who she can’t tell if his spirit is actually there or if she’s slowly losing it herself, but the way these lyrics are framed, if you listen to them with the perspective I offer in mind, it can and does begin to sound like a trans person talking to themself. This little part particularly got to me while I was listening:
“There’s an old voice in my head That’s holding me back Well, tell her that I miss our little talks
Some days I don’t know if I am wrong or right Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear,
Cause though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore”
(plain text is the wife’s voice, italics is husband. and bold is both at once.)
Idk, this is just me rambling while I listen and ruminate on the themes of this book. But it was an interesting observation to have after having obsessed over this song for a whole damn decade since it came out and hear it with a different point of view in mind.
I wrote something???? TWO SOMETHINGS????
Anyway, Peter Darling ficlets for anyone who wants 'em. James/Peter:
Something Like Destiny - General Audiences
Set directly after the last scene in the book, one more moment of significance.
