Chapter Excerpt

She drew a breath, surveying the garden. In case they were being watched. The building was smothered in a deep green cloak, choked by ivy. Fluttering in the breeze, leaves poured in great, cascading heaves over the balcony, coiled and laced around the bars, crawling down to the blue-night expanse where Ada imagined the vines would never stop growing. Fig ivy, that restless climber.

“That bit about the Peace Corps, though, that was good,” Leon said, snapping her attention back to him. And after a moment, he added, “Must be nice having so many friends in high places. Doubt they believed that kiss for one second. Weak if you ask me.”

“Excuse me?”

“Weak,” he repeated. “Small. Unconvincing. So unlike you.”
