sometimes I randomly remember this character exists
I’ve been reading og Delano lately and I love how miserable he is
Putting him in a blender to see what he does
Birth boy
Ray Monde and Aids
Inspired by someone mentioning Ray in my general vicinity on accident, legit when I finally got to his chapter I was rambling to my friend about how this was such a surprisingly well written gay character given the time period he was introduced (the late 80s), especially one with Aids/HIV, in an era where many people were still scared of that kind of thing, It wasn't until the year before the comic was released in 1987 that Princess Diana shook hands with Aid's patients which was such a giant thing back in the day because many people believed Aids was a dirty disease that you could catch from merely shaking someone's hand or being around them. Yet when Ray tells John he has Aids...
Idk this just made my cold dead little heart MELT when I saw it, how John comforted Ray with a hand on his shoulder and didn't say a word. Idk it made me kicks my feet, I really wish we saw more of Ray, even if it was as a ghost like the rest of John's buds, but given Ray only showed up once as a ghost and it was literally to be a guardian angel for John and talk him out of stupid shit his ass is probably up in Heaven with Brendan.
RAY MONDE MENTIONED!!! WRAGGGHHH 😭😭
Urgh I adore early Hellblazer for vulnerable moments like this. It's absolutely important to consider the historical context this comic was published in- a world that was so much crueler than today yet a comic as hardcore as Hellblazer chose to be so kind.
When I'm sad that we barely get to see much of Ray past the early issues, if we consider how young John was when he "first came to London"- Ray has been John's friend for 20 years. While his canonical time in Hellblazer was short lived, in the bigger scope of John's life- Ray was a longstanding companion.
There's so much room to tell incredible stories with Ray Monde and young John Constantine.
Ray is such a great character that grounds the realities of being a queer man during the AIDS crisis. Whenever I read modern DC/Vertigo comics that shy away from these realities- it makes me think how despite all the progress we've made, we can't seem to reach what was so bravely said by a comic published in the 80s. If Ray was ever picked up as a character again, I hope his identity isn't chiseled away into something more palatable (as modern Johnstantine has), because that would be such a disservice to his history.
EXACTLY like the fact this was written in such a respectable and loving way during the 80's is insane. You would never see this kind of rep now adays honestly, which is why I adore Ray so much even if we only see him a grand total of like...7 times and half of those are non-speaking roles. I really wish modern Hellblazer will give us flashbacks so we could see some teenage John and Ray shenanigans, or just more Ray in general PLEASE DC MY LIFE IS YOURS!!
I feel like a fundamental misunderstanding that some writers have with Constantine is that they think he's an innately bad and cruel person at heart.
No!! He's a good person who does bad things! The contradiction of him wanting to be good and BEING good at heart versus the necessary (and sometimes unnecessary but badly thought out) evils he commits is what makes him interesting. He's incredibly flawed, he can be jaded, he can be stupid, he can even be cruel, but under it all, he's good.

That time that John saved Christmas (this marks the second time), by absorbing the power of Bishop Agios Nickolaus, who we now call Santa Claus. This was in lieu of a blood mage Mako, who prophesied that our 'Laughing Magician' would bring the end of the world. Wanting to add an edge to his powers, Constantine borrowed the power of Christmas itself (thanks to Santa Claus) to even the odds and trap Mako in his own soul-binding hold.
