The announcement of this year's shortlist nears. Winning the runner up prize with 'Byne Hill' in 2021 was a real joy. I even managed to visit Wigtown in July in 2022 during my Scotland homecoming visit. The sun was shining and i found a copy of Chapman 108 waiting on the shelves for me in The Open Book Shop!
Visited Girvan Tourist Information Point at the end of July and thanked the wonderful Rhona Anderson for selling signed copies of "Saved from The Fire".
Poetry Library Scotland visit, July 2022 - found a copy of New Writing Scotland 26 ('Hartman Running', short story). Blessed to be in such fine company.
Poetry Library Scotland visit, July 2022 - found a copy of New Writing Scotland 23 ('The Miles', short story). Blessed to be in such fine company.
Thanks to editors Stewart Ennis and Adam Kealley for Causeway/Cabhsair Vol 11, Issue 1, published by Aberdeen University Press and for finding a home for three of my poems.
'There is a melancholy remembering, of people and place, running through Mark Gallacher's poems, but there is energy and movement too of various kinds. In 'Secret Sacred Place' it is the salmon that race, while in 'Men to Boys' and 'Old Fell Runners' it is people who are running back and forth across space, and through time.' - Stewart Ennis.
Thankful and chuffed to be shortlisted for the Alastair Reid Pamphlet Prize at this year's Wigtown Poetry Prize.#Wigtown
DreamForge magazine now on Kindle. Issue 2 - Max Grade, Scotland's first astronaut on Mars!
Many thanks to the editors of the American version of Litro for publishing my story 'Progress Hall' on their original story platform.

Look what came through my postbox this week. I guess this is what's meant by a late spring. My heartfelt thanks to the editors Peter Blair and Ashley Chamber for finding a home for 'Two Girls and a Man'.

Review of ‘Pioneer’
Thanks to the editors - Gayle Surrett, Sam Tomaino et al for this in SFRevu: 'Pioneer" by Mark Gallacher - Our narrator, whom everyone calls J-Max is the grandson and son of fishermen. But he does something different. He goes to Mars. Nice little tale.'
Much thanks goes to Scot Noel, the editor of DreamForge Magazine for reading my story 'Pioneer' at Confluence, the Annual Pittsburgh Science Fiction Conference.
Is there a word to describe a belated close-but-no-cigar moment?
Doing some submission housekeeping at the end of 2018, I realised a short story of mine, ‘The Good Brother’ was, according to my records, still under consideration for the Retreat West 2017 Short Story Prize. A quick email correspondence with the editor revealed that the story had reached the final 25 stories but alas, didn’t make the final shortlist of prizewinners.
Not sure what you would call that but it was nice to know when I reached the finish, I could still see the winners crossing the line :)
