#okay i knooooow most of you couldn’t care less but! let me teach you something!#blood pressure can essentially be affected by two things: cardiac output (the volume of blood being pumped out) and vascular resistance #(the resistance blood has to combat to move through the vessels)#basically an increase in blood volume or resistance causes BP to go up #and a decrease in blood volume or resistance causes BP to go down #our body has a SUPER COOL pathway called the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (raas) to fix issues with BP #if the kidneys (which filter blood and turn the waste into urine) notice a drop in BP they release something called renin #the liver always makes something called angiotensinogen but it just hangs out until renin converts it to angiotensin I #(fun fact: -ogen basically means inactive)#the lungs join in and make something called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) which converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II #(ever heard of ace inhibitors? they stop this part which is why it’s an antihypertensive!)#angiotensin II is a vasoconstrictor - aka it narrows vessels - which increases vascular resistance and therefore BP #angiotensin II also triggers the adrenal cortex to release aldosterone #aldosterone causes the kidneys to reabsorb sodium -> water follows sodium -> less urine output -> higher blood volume -> increased BP #angiotensin II ALSO triggers the posterior pituitary gland to release antidiuretic hormone (ADH)#ADH does two things: 1) tells the kidneys to reabsorb water -> less urine output -> higher blood volume -> increased BP (you get it)#2): tells the brain it’s thirsty -> drink water -> higher blood volume -> increased BP (again)#there’s a bit more to the whole story of course but isn’t that so cool!?#anyway yeah the raas system is one of my favorite things to learn about and now you’ve learned about it tooooo!#tldr; a bunch of organs and hormones can work together to raise your blood pressure if needed and that’s rad
