“Honestly, nothing excites me quite as much as finding a good song from now to listen to. Classical music will always be my favorite, but there’s nothing quite as satisfying as being able to sing horribly off key to some song on the radio. Plus, it’s really hard to dance around my room to classical.”
“and honestly, a lot of music nowadays is starting to get better. now or never by halsey or electric love by borns, god i can really jam to those songs. you should see me in the car. actually, quite a few people have seen me jammin’ in my car pretty embarrassing.”

“Bad night, bad day…. bad life?” She asked the person as they sat on the stool in front of her. “Normally I don’t try to intrude about one’s day, just serve you your drink and go, but would you like a side of small-talk with your drink?”
“i’m actually not drinking, it’s just uh- it’s just a soda.” she lifted her glass and then placed it back down, sighing as she shifted on the stool. “but some small talk is always welcome, please, talk away.”

“someone left a usb stick with my name on on my doorstep this morning, i was a little apprehensive to plug the thing in so i grabbed one of my old notebooks and opened it to find someone had made me a romantic playlist? was pretty cute.”
“it was me, it was me. did you like my jams? i bet you did. hell, yeah, i bet you loved them.”

it pained him to see marleigh suffer more than she already needed to. he’d been there with her through it all, the breakup, the struggles with her brother. he had been her brothers friend, but in time, it became a case of connor trying to protect her from the truth. but marleigh was always smarter than he’d anticipated. all he could really do was be there for her. she felt like family. “boys are dumb.” he replied, deadpan. “they won’t admit to what they want, because doing that makes them look weak. but he wants you, you wouldn’t be going in circles like this if he didn’t.”
marleigh could only laugh at his reply, nodding her head quickly in agreement. “boys are dumb, you included.” she finally sat up, knowing that she wasn’t going to get anywhere with this talk because it was the same stuff she had been telling herself since the day that her and tyler had split. “but enough abut boys being dumb, at least boys being dumb when it comes to me. what about you, huh? what’s your love life like these days? i feel like i’ve missed out on so much.”

he fell silent after watching her throw back the pills and took a space on the floor. he didn’t feel worthy enough for a spot on the bed next to her so instead he chose to sit where he felt he deserved to. on the ground. “when do your parents come home?” he asked, absent-mindedly running his fingers through the carpet he had parked himself on. he almost wanted her to forget what she had said, but that wasn’t going to happen, was it? this was marleigh. she had the memory of an elephant. the kiss was still fresh in his mind, he had been completely sober, there was nothing he could forget about last night. it was all still as vivid as a polaroid in his hand. he stayed quiet for a little while, breathed deeply and eventually found the courage to look up at her. “i screwed up, i know.” the other began, admitting to his faults. “i act out to get a reaction from you - and i did - and i’m sorry.” sometimes it’s just nice to see that you still care for me. but he kept his deeper thoughts to himself, he wasn’t sure if he was ready to reveal just how heavy their breakup had hit him, and still hurt him after all this time. he didn’t want to be that sad puppy dog boy with a broken heart and a bad attitude because some girl dumped him. even though that was exactly what he was. “do you remember much?”
marleigh waited for him to take a spot on her bed next to him, but he chose to find a space on the floor instead. knowing that he wasn’t going to make the move to sit next to her, she moved off her bed slowly and onto the floor next to him. “they come home in a few days, so i have the house to myself for a little while longer. which i guess is a good thing considering my house is a disaster and i’m not going to get anything cleaned today. she tried to laugh, but it just came out as a short, small sound that was slightly similar to a laugh. it only lasted a moment before she fell silent again. laughing in this moment didn’t seem right. everything was just too serious. she wished more than anything that she didn’t remember the night before, she wished that she could just move on from it, but her memory was clear as day. she remembered the pure rage that she felt when she saw those two girls draped all over him and the stinging pain in her hand from when she had slapped him, but what she remembered most was the aching pain in her chest that she felt. picking at her nails, a nervous habit she had started when she was just a kid, she kept her eyes downcast as he apologized and she continued to do so as she replied. “i remember everything. every detail.” she flinched slightly as she picked at her nail once more, but kept her hands moving, her fidgeting being the only thing that helped her keep talking. “and i’m sorry. i’m sorry that i said those things and that i got so messed up. i’m sorry for kissing you. i mean, i’m not, but i feel like i should say i am. i just-” she paused and raised her eyes to look at him for a moment before she looked down again. “i just love you. i miss you. i don’t know what to do about it anymore. all we do is fight nowadays and find ways to hurt each other. we’ve been so hateful and that’s the funny thing, i suppose. we should hate each other, but we don’t. we’re a mess and i don’t know what to do anymore.”

“oh- oh, wow.” she lifted her cup up and sat it on the table next to her. “thank you, seriously, these jeans are too nice to spill things on.”

connor watched the girl and let out a wistful sigh as he crossed both his arms over his chest. “what is it that makes you mad at him? don’t you think that you’re mad at each other because of all the frustration that’s still there? it’s unresolved.”
marleigh was grateful for connor, he was the brother she no longer seemed to have and the one person she knew that she could always count on. she sighed heavily and closed her eyes for a moment, talking about tyler always pushing her to some sort of emotional point. “what do you want me to say, con? the guy has my whole heart, my everything. i don’t want anyone else, but i don’t know how to fix anything. we’ve just both pushed each other to our breaking points time and time again. i just think i’m angry because i still love him and i shouldn’t. i shouldn’t want to be with him after everything, i should want to move on, but i can’t. i can’t even look at anyone else like that and it kills me.”

“I mean you do make a good point about the other option. I just feel like it would kind of be selfish of me to artificially inseminate myself when there are so many kids out there who don’t have any parents because of how horrible their parents were to them.” She said to her. “Ahhh well then that makes sense.” She said while looking at her and thinking for a couple of seconds. “Is your brother younger or older?”
“you know, i respect and understand that. i think you have the right mindset and i feel like you may have a decent head on your shoulders. if you really want to adopt and you feel you’re stable enough then i think you should. i would just try to remember that as a single woman, the process isn’t going to be easy and it may take awhile.” marleigh paused, unsure of sharing her family’s business, but she also felt that it may make her feel better to get the worries of her chest. “he’s older and i swear he’s not all that bad. he just got wrapped up in some sticky situations, made some awful decisions that changed his life.”
