What kind of wings are truly capable of carrying a fairy through the sky for a long time? None!
Let me explain.
🌿 The wings of Disney fairies are light, weightless, and undoubtedly beautiful. However... They do not work without fairy dust. In the context of a certain magical world, why not — every universe has its own rules, and I have nothing against that. I adore these animated films with all my heart, have watched them many times, downloaded the songs from them, and I am generally a fan of the Fairies franchise. Sometimes I really want to become a tiny pixie, live in a flower, and chat with the bees... However, wings that do not work without dust are a certain risk, since the dust might not be around, and then you would have to rely solely on your own legs.
🌿 The wings of fairies and elves from the Strange Magic universe are incredible, realistic, large, truly capable of lifting a fairy into the air and keeping her there for a long time. However... In my opinion, the attachment area of the wing to the back is too small (the area between the shoulder blades), and the fairy's muscles simply would not withstand such a load on such a small area of the back. Butterfly wings are indeed the type of wings that could help a fairy fly, since the lower wings support the pelvic area and legs, which is necessary for flight in a humanoid-type creature. But for that, the wings themselves would need more powerful muscles (a thicker base) and a wider attachment area — from the base of the neck (or from the area between the shoulder blades) down to the tailbone. However, I am not a biologist, so I cannot state this with certainty — I can only speculate based on logic.
🌿 The wings of fairies and elves from the Maleficent universe are the closest to realism in terms of size and structure, but here too, the same problem persists: the small attachment area of the wing to the fairy/elf's back. From the very first viewing of Maleficent, my eye kept catching on this fact. It literally looks uncomfortable, and immediately you get a sense of overload on the character's shoulder blade muscles. Not to mention that such a base simply cannot lift a humanoid body into the air. How to solve the problem: enlarge the attachment area of the wing to the back (from the shoulder blades to the tailbone) and ideally add a tail for greater maneuverability in flight. However, perhaps the wide flight feathers of the wing itself would suffice; they could also serve as a tail. It would be one large membrane that would allow the creature to glide through the air.
✨ Of course, if we examine all of this from a purely scientific point of view, a humanoid simply cannot have wings capable of lifting them into the air. For that, the human anatomy would have to be completely reworked. However, if we assume that this is not necessary and that the wings of the above characters are adapted for flight, the main problem remains the size of the wing's base. A small attachment area means a heavy load on localized muscles. My favorites remain Marianna's and Maleficent's wings, as they are simply incomparable and absolutely beautiful.
✨ I absolutely love the topic of wings on humans, so I often ponder how it might look. For many years, I myself dreamed of having wings to fly, but that is a whole other story.
✨ I am always happy to hear alternative opinions on these musings.
