It’s important to know that hijab is banned in schools in most of the european countries, such as france, belgium, switzerland etc. Millions of girls have to take their hijab off everyday in order to have access to education, and I am one of them. Please spread this as much as possible, it has become so normal here that I feel like a fool for even mentioning it, but I’m pretty sure it goes against the human rights. This senseless law has been on since 2004 and pretends that all the students have to be “equal” and it is prohibited to show that you belong to any religion, any religious sign must be set aside. However, most of us have to take our hijab off in schools where you can clearly see a christmas tree or a christian cross. “Yeah but it’s not the same”, they say. Tell me about double standards. I pray for days when we don’t have to chose between religion and education.
Yesterday we learned that Harlem’s infamous “Jesus Would Stone Homos” hate church has been ordered to public auction due to over $1M in unpaid bills.
Remember Atlah Worldwide Church in Harlem? The church that wrote “Jesus Would Stone Homos” and other anti-LGBT messages on its marquee?
They racked up over a million dollars in unpaid bills, and now the building is up for public auction. The Ali Forney Center, which houses about 107 homeless LGBT youth in New York City, is ready and willing to make an offer, buy the space and convert it into an LGBT homeless youth shelter – if we can help them come up with the money.
Since 2014, local Harlem residents have opposed Rev. Manning’s messages of hatred and violence by organizing a series of events to raise funds for the Ali Forney Center, as well as to increase awareness of the needs of homeless LGBT youths. Also they have organized a series of protests outside of Atlah Church. These efforts, under the name of Love Not Hate, have been coordinated by Stacy Parker Le Melle.
“I am ecstatic to imagine a future where our Harlem corner will be a home of compassion, not hatred. We have a homeless problem in New York City. The de Blasio administration is working hard to remedy this, but LGBT young people are especially vulnerable with the shelter system. They need protection. The Ali Forney Center is a beacon, but they need more space for transitional housing and job training. I can’t imagine a better use for that property. Who needs more luxury condos? We need to care for the most vulnerable in our midst.”
Le Melle continued “When the ATLAH story broke on Thursday, immediately I heard from neighbors: wouldn’t it be amazing if an LGBT group could acquire the property? What if it were the Ali Forney Center? We all knew that this would be poetic justice. We need to care for those kicked out of homes, often on religious-based grounds. We need to care for those most vulnerable to ATLAH’s hate speech.”
Ali Forney needs at least $200k to begin to make this happen. If you can, donate. If you can’t, spread the word. There’s a whole lot of need in Harlem, and how amazing would it be to take a place that was a site of such hurt and vitriol and turn it into something truly life-saving?
BREAKING: NRDC has filed a federal lawsuit to secure safe drinking water for the people of Flint, Michigan. NRDC, as part of a coalition of local citizens and national groups, is seeking federal court intervention to secure access to safe drinking water for the people of Flint, Michigan. “Officials are violating the federal law that protects drinking water. In doing so, they are exposing the people of Flint to lead, a powerful toxin that can be devastating to young children. We are asking a federal court to step in,” said NRDC Senior Attorney Dimple Chaudhary. http://on.nrdc.org/1WNLIhZ
Flint poisoned Joe’s water, so he built a filtration system to make it drinkable
Joe and Shirley Love, both 60, have lived in Flint for years and felt the effects of the water crisis firsthand. “I started having trouble with this right eye,” Shirley Love told Mic. “When I get something in my eye, I splash it with a face bowl of water. I do that all the time. But now my eye itches, it hurts, it’s blurry.”
So Joe Love took matters into his own hands and built a DIY filtering system, using reverse osmosis to remove waste from the city’s water.

@the-future-now is taking the solution into your own hands.
Joe’s brilliant for coming up with this filtration system on his own, but it’s sad that he needed to do this. Hope to see the Flint water situation resolved soon.

That is great! Hadn’t heard it.

On Safe Spaces and Trigger Warnings
OK so imagine you’re celebrating a close relative’s wedding, right? And it’s the rehearsal dinner. And the entire family is going to sit down in this wonderful restaurant everybody loves (but which is not owned by anybody in the family, even, it’s just a staple of the public community). It’s a fantastic restaurant, OK? Everybody loves it. But unfortunately, there are some really belligerent people that night who are dining there. And one of those belligerent people, they ignore the sign in the room you’ve reserved (you know, the sign that says “private event, room reserved?) and barges in, and sees that it’s a wedding celebration, and is like “FUCK YOU WEDDINGS ARE TOTAL SHIT IT’S JUST SERVITUDE MAN IT’S CHAINS AND SERVITUDE FUCK WEDDINGS!” and screams and screams at everybody and generally ruins everybody’s night because they refuse to recognize the validity of a sign that says “room reserved: private function.”
do you believe that’s fucked up and wrong? If so, you BELIEVE IN SAFE SPACES.
so hypothetical number 2:
imagine a world where porn didn’t have to be marked as porn, where there was not rating system in general for movies. Or for books, for that matter. Imagine a world where book summaries did not exist at all, where the content of entertainment media was generally left ambiguous. Where there was no children’s section of a library, because all books were just grouped together and you had to figure out what was appropriate and what wasn’t simply by reading it or watching it first, instead of being able to sift through things and decide what was a good movie for family movie night. Imagine a world of extreme NO SPOILERS culture. A world where “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” was grouped with “The Twits” by Roald Dahl because they were both vaguely categorized as “revenge stories.”
do you believe that’s fucked up and horrifying? If so, you BELIEVE IN TRIGGER WARNINGS.
—-
basically, what I’m trying to say is that if you believe in privacy and if you believe in telling people what things are about, if you believe in “warning there is graphic content in this news broadcast” and TV and Movie ratings and Porn marking itself as “NC-17,” if you believe that there are some times when barging in on somebody or a group of people is wrong and in bad taste, then congratulations: you’re a decent person, and you want safe spaces and trigger warnings.
some of my followers really need to read this. advocating for safe spaces and trigger warnings is neither “pandering to the SJWs and POCs!!” nor is it being “too sensitive” or an overly politically-correct tryhard.
it’s literally possessing empathy for others and recognising the immeasurable complexities and variety of ways we exist as human beings… it’s recognising and affirming the struggles of those who have walked paths different from yours, who come from worlds you can barely (and are actively refusing to) fathom based on your own limited perspectives and lived experiences. you showboat your entitlement and ignorance in your subsequent dismissal of potential traumas, horrible memories, and stress-inducing episodes that could be set off by something YOU personally deem innocuous.
like, how arrogant do you have to be, honestly. lol. get out of your head and try out some empathy for 3 seconds. it’s not that difficult.
The available data shows that lead exposure is a pervasive issue in the United States.
People PLEASE. Once you got bored you dropped the West Virginia Coal Ash Contamination of Drinking Water, Colorado spill outrage lasted a day or two. This is not a “Cause of the Week”, this is a problem. This is the Reagan Legacy, this is the results of small time cuts for the benefit of Wealthy Pocketbooks and the resultant suffering the poor, no not just the poor, but the ENTIRE Nation and Planet.
If you look at the world and say “Yes, there are enough homes for people, yes, there is enough food for people, but if we give it away for free they won’t have earned it and the economy will collapse.” Then you have chosen money (a constructed medium of exchange) over living beings who only want to continue living in peace and safety.
And I have no qualms telling you, that is the wrong choice, and you have been brainwashed by this destructive, exploitative system.
ahhhh, I’m happy this one came back.
The people represented in a work aren’t the only ones who will see it.
Positive representation of marginalized people does more than supporting self-esteem or giving people role models. It also gives people in the privileged group an opportunity to learn to empathize with marginalized people, which has immediate and direct benefits to people oppressed by that privileged group.
A lack of positive and diverse media representation encourages people with greater social power to see marginalized people as two-dimensional stereotypes - often as threatening or irrelevant or both. This perspective translates to how privileged people will approach members of that group in real life, and encourages acceptance of injustice toward that group.
For instance, when the overwhelming majority of media focuses on men and their goals and inner lives, treating women as props to further the journeys of the men around them, it’s both demoralizing to women and dangerous, as men are encouraged to see real women in the same way, and treat them accordingly.
Positive representation has the potential to do the opposite - to challenge dehumanization and the excuses for marginalization. (This is one reason allies of a marginalized group should seek out media that the group says represents them well.)
Much of what we learn about what other people are like comes from media portrayals. Obviously seeing ourselves in media is important - but media representation affects the way we see and treat others as well.
