do you ever think about what a powerful move it is to subvert expectations of gender agreement in sentences in the english language? like the sentence, “I love my wife, but I hope he didn’t eat all my hot pockets, (referencing some silly meme I saw earlier but cannot for the life of me actually recall 😔). in subverting the match of ‘wife’ and ‘hers,’ you for the reader to challenge their preconceived notions of what a ‘wife’ can be, while simultaneously (one can only dream) subverting the idea of gendered language in general, thereby rendering the idea that english words have specific inborn ‘genders’ meaningless. in so doing, in a way, you mock the entire institution of gender and take away some of its power from creating purposeful confusion. language anarchy. language activism. language as political change. Language as a great example of everyday resistance. So, in this TED Talk, I’ll be talking about—
