anakin: *says anything* cody: with all due respect, sir, which is none,
separate conversations were in progress when the sound of clanging footfalls echoed from the long corridor that led to the briefing room. abruptly everyone fell silent, and a moment later general grievous appeared in the hatchway, the rounded crown of his elongated death mask of a helmet grazing the top of the opening, his high-backed collar of ceramic armorplast reminiscent of a neck brace. sheathed in metal more suited to a starfighter, his skeletal upper limbs were spread wide, claw-like duranium hands just touching the hatchway frame. his two feet, which also resembled claws, were capable of increasing his height by several centimeters. legs of sleek alloy bones looked as if they could propel him into orbit. his campaign cloak, slit down one side from left shoulder to floor, was thrown back so that twin pectorals of armor plating were exposed, along with the reverse ribs that began at grievous’s hip girdle and extended upward to his shielded sternum. beneath it all, encased in a kind of fluid-filled, forest-green gutsac, were the organs that nurtured the living part of him. behind helmet holes that rendered his visage at once mournful and fearsome, sallow reptilian eyes fixed gunray with a gimlet stare. in a synthesized voice, deep and grating, he said: “welcome aboard, viceroy. for a moment we feared that you weren’t going to arrive.”
if dave didn’t hate my happiness we could’ve had a whole ass “commander mfn cody saves ahsoka and a group of younglings from drunk uncle hondo” arc but NO, my life is perpetual SUFFERING
w/ a monotone voice “wow that is so wild”

GAYLE SENTENCE STARTERS / accepting.
hundreds - if not thousands - of good men lost, and for what? the swampy backwater planet had been of little significance in the grand scheme of things, but it would still serve as a minor foot - hold for the republic to divert yet more resources to, sparse as they were. the only information cody had been given ( woefully inadequate to properly organize the most effective plan of attack ) was its name, which he had promptly forgotten as soon as his boots hit solid ground again, and that it should be taken at any cost. for reasons cody couldn’t seem to understand, there was only a slim margin for error allowed : some of his best men were, evidently, acceptable collateral damage.
but the senate would be pleased - the chancellor would be pleased - with yet one more victorious waste of good resources that could be put to better use. the debriefing, if it could be called that, had gone about as well as expected ( re: cody had put on his best brave face under his helmet, read off the names and numbers of their higher - than - usual casualties to a crowd of uninterested nat - borns, and he had shunted his emotions to the back of his head to properly examine them at a later time : never ), and now he was free in the loosest sense of the word to enjoy his precious time off before the next deployment.
cody hadn’t expected to be seeing his general so soon : he must’ve been more lost in his head than he thought.
“i take it your meeting didn’t go well, general?” he says in reply, and it’s become such a redundant question he isn’t sure why he bothers to ask anymore. still : no rest for the wicked, and duty is never far away. “will we be receiving more supplies before we depart?”
( there’s no point in calling them men, anyways. )
