BLM has published a plan to maximize logging in Oregon forests, including old growth forests, without due regard to wildlife (including endangered species) and waterways. They're claiming it will help prevent forest fires, though that seems to be contrary to current science, including that published by the forest service (you can find a list of sources here). This is in response to Trump's executive orders 14223, Addressing the Threat to National Security From Imports of Timber, Lumber, and Their Derivative Products and 14225, Immediate Expansion of American Timber Production.
We have 30 days to submit comments if we want to prevent this. This article has suggestions for what you can say, and how:
One billion board feet per year... 30 days to make your voice heard.
You can read more about it here:
Conservationists say proposal to “maximize” logging across nearly 2 million acres of Western Oregon BLM lands would devastate fish, wildlife
If you live in Oregon and you love our forests, please submit a comment before March 23rd.
If you don't live here, it would be super helpful if you could reblog to spread the word.

current fan creation landscape is kinda like if you went to a party with a homemade cake and everyone takes a slice and silently thumbs up at you with no attempt to start a conversation except for occasionally some guy sits in the corner with a tape recorder critiquing the cake as though he was a restaurant critic and another guy is handing the cake to an uber driver like "yeah i need you to find a restaurant that makes cake like this so i can have more of it" and the only person that's talked to you in 30 minutes is a very sweet little guy who was like "hey i liked your cake" and then ran away apologizing for bothering you the moment you said thank you.
someone brought a cake analysis robot to feed the cake into to determine the exact ingredients and supposedly it can spit out the exact same cake. and if you're like dude. what. then they're like well if it bothers you you should have made more cake. i'm hungry and i deserve cake. and you're like dude we're at a party.
Three months later you find out that fifty people locked themselves in a room to discuss how much they loved your cake and how they wished you made more. None of them ever told you.
so for the love of god. please tell people you liked their cake and don’t feel embarrassed about it. because then they will make more cake.
Also, actually say you liked the cake. Don't just assume that the writer knows you liked it because showed up to eat it. We don't know why you're eating it, maybe you hate it and are just trying to remind yourself why.
Can Kamala Harris win? Does she really stand a chance? I’m so scared for my American friends, their families and every kind, decent human being who resides there.
She has a motherfucking chance because we are going to GIVE her a motherfucking chance.
No more talking about how "of course" the country won't elect a black woman (they also thought that with Obama in 2008). No more dooming. We can destroy the fucking billionaire donors as soon as the election is over. We can do everything else as soon as we have time to do it because we are not being fucked in the ass by Trump and his despicable orange fascists.
We are going to rally the fuck behind Kamala Harris and we are going to do it now. We are going to support whichever VP she chooses. We are going to be on the fucking lookout for any Purity Police whining about how Kamala isn't good enough either. We are going to keep our eyes fucking open for the Russian interference that frankly, I suspect, contributed heavily to this in the first place. We are going to learn our fucking lesson from 2016 and not whine about Third Party Protest Votes. We are going to pull together and quit fucking whining. Now Biden is out. You don't have to cOnDeSceNd yourself to voting for him. You are going to fucking help us get Kamala in office so fucking help us God. Then we can deal with the rest of it later. It is that simple.
The end.
#you wanted the party to listen? it did#you wanted a powerful man to willingly give up that power for the sake of the country and the people he swore to serve? he DID#now it's time to roll up our sleeves and convert an astonishing opportunity into a historic accomplishment (via @unstatedmartini)
“She has a chance because we are going to give her a motherfucking chance” is probably one of the stronger motivating statements I’ve seen…for years, really.
From a numbers perspective, the way Democrats (both official endorsements and regular voters) have immediately LINED UP behind Harris is something we haven’t seen since Obama and I’m honestly not sure it was this strong then (the Obama/Clinton primary competition was fierce). ActBlue (the Democrats’ political fundraising platform) raised $63 MILLION in one day yesterday, which is a record for any political fundraising ever. On the more conservative side, the Nikki Haley Voters PAC, a group that represents conservatives who oppose Trump and had already endorsed Biden, immediately endorsed Harris yesterday.
There’s tons of work to be done, and there will be challenges. The misogynoir has started and it’s going to suck and we need to be prepared for that. But this is more than a chance, this is the most energy I’ve seen from the Democrats in YEARS.
Oh and I just saw this and I cannot imagine a zoom call with 40,000 people (the call raised over $1 million in 3 hours)
Imagine being buried alive and then seeing this little guy with a backpack suddenly arrive
It gets better. The little backpack has a two-way radio.
So you’re trapped under rubble, and then a rat shows up. Flicks a switch on its little tumtum. And starts talking to you.

#I love the hashtag women in STEM bc at first I thought they meant the rat 🙈 (via @sprotteswelt)
until you said that it never occurred to me that the woman in STEM was the scientist and not the rat. i was just like “hell yeah, this rat is a powerful woman pioneering lifesaving technologies as a rescue ranger”
why are we sleeping on this
official women in STEM post
why did reading “I am a RescueRat, I’m here to help you” make me fucking tear up
We have a bird playing on our skylight window.

Hello, friends! Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. 2020 did its level best, but I am still on this mortal plane and writing away. I took a brief hiatus from book writing to pursue a few other things like a master’s degree and a bit of dabbling in screenplays, but books are still on the agenda as well. I have at least two books on my writing docket this year, and with any luck, one…

Orbital path of asteroid near miss in 2002. Yah, that’s how close we came to nuclear winter and possible total destruction.
A visitor.
It’s like it’s trying so hard to hit us and it just can’t do it
All I can imagine is every astronomer drinking heavily from 2002-2003 like “There it goes–OH FUCK IT’S COMING BACK”
Thanks moon <3
Moon: YEET
The moon threw it away yay moon
the moon was having none of it
The best part about this? They took a picture (read: spectrographic analysis) of the thing and found out it wasn’t an asteroid at all. It was a piece of a Saturn V rocket, discarded in space decades ago and set into an orbit around the sun. That’s right, this motherfucker spent 30 years orbiting the sun, waiting for a chance to have its revenge on the petty humans who abandoned it in the void.
So that weirdly common Star Trek trope in which one of our space probes comes back to fuck us up turned out to be true
If you click through to the article, it also says that they believe it has a 40-year interim between heliocentric orbit (orbiting the sun) and geocentric orbit (orbit the Earth)
Which means sometime in the 2040’s, it’s likely coming back.

miles “who’s morales” morales’s biggest weakness is the cover story
peter, lying out of his ass: i was, uh, married to his uncle aaron. he just never let you know
Jefferson, later: Do you think Aaron never told us because Peter’s…
Rio: …Tall
Jefferson: I didn’t think Aaron liked … Tall people.
Jefferson: “But listen: Aaron might have married a white boy just to annoy me, specifically. It’s a thing he would do!”
Rio: “I can’t hear you. I’m asleep. I have a shift in four hours.”
I really wish there was a way Uncle Aaron lived and came back to meet his “husband” at some point now.
Aaron: …Miles…I love you, and I am proud of you…but you are somehow the smartest and dumbest boy I have ever known.
Miles: Says the man who used his big brain to become a criminal when he could’ve been a black Tony Stark with that gear he made. And thought working for the Kingpin, who everyone knows will throw his minions away like tissues, was a good idea!
Peter: He makes a good point, babe, you did kind of mess up first–
Aaron: Call me babe again and see what happens. I’ll whoop you with a collapsed lung.
All I see is “fake marriage au, but it’s also enemies to lovers”

Trust Me, I’m Lying by Mary Elizabeth Summer

My opinion in three sentences:
It seemed straightforward and I could see where it was going with each Big Reveal, yet Summer used this to her advantage, subconsciously setting-up a series of actual issues that would spring back later to surprise the reader. Nicely written, with a strong sense of character, unique voice and good world-building - though, I hasten to add, providing a different tone to Carter’s novels (just as a heads up, not a critique either way…) An inventive twist on your average teen-spy/criminal story that definitely stands out amongst its compatriots.

One of the best reviews of TMIL I’ve read. 💗
Lewis Black - Black To The Future
Funny thing? He almost certainly did it on purpose.
And I don’t mean that as “actually he knows what he’s doing.” I mean it as “he has been committing one of the longest running and most blatant cases of fraud in the history of business and it’s only due to the limitations of our legal system that his entire business history is not classified as a Ponzi Scheme.”
Because he didn’t just bankrupt a casino.
He bought two casinos in Atlantic city, exaggerated the shit out of their profits to lure in investors, and began work on building a third casino. He was overextended in the market in a way that had him competing against his own businesses. He also snubbed contractors, threatened and litigated a ton of small businesses out of their jobs, and raised capital through issuing hundreds of millions of dollars in junk bonds (high risk high reward, they’re below investment grade but some people like to bet on them because the interest rate in the case of a payout is very large).
So what happened? He leveraged his ownership in a way that allowed him to strip out a ton of assets (which he legally owned), while leaving the corporate side totally overloaded with debt financing from the junk bonds, and then he drove all of it into the ground. Hard.
He went to bankruptcy court like 3 separate times over casino projects. While in bankruptcy court, he relentlessly fled from personal liability (his equity stake in the companies was extremely minimal because of the debt financing strategy) and managed to pay back a tiny fraction of his actual debt (this is why he always handles his debt in bankruptcy court; you can get away with paying back pennies on the dollar when you supposedly have no money). He also issued like 300 million more in junk bonds to pay himself and his legal fees, then went back to bankruptcy court and frauded all of THOSE investors.
Now you’ve probably heard the term Ponzi Scheme before, but if you’ve never heard a proper explanation of how one works, here’s a basic breakdown. First, you borrow money from one investor. Then, you borrow money from a second investor, and use that money to pay back the first investor at an impressive interest rate. Then you can start selling the scam to people by showing them how good your investors are doing, and hook more people in. You pay back earlier investors with the influx of cash from the new ones, while raking in the profits for yourself.
Now think about this business model. Use debt financing to start up a business. Litigate, fraud, or drive your contractors out of business so they don’t have enough money to sue you for what you owe them. Leverage the capital structure so you have minimal liability personally invested in the company. Strip out assets before a collapse because hey, you own it. Raise more debt capital to keep the illusion running as long as you can, and when you can’t keep up with what you owe your investors anymore, file for bankruptcy and pay them back scraps. You’ve made a ton of money, frauded a ton of investors, and they can’t come after you for it because you were leveraged behind a corporation and your personal liability was very small. You make more money off a flop than a hit. Rinse and repeat.
BUT YOU CAN’T GET CAUGHT FOR SETTING UP A PYRAMID SCHEME BECAUSE IT DOESN’T LAST LONG ENOUGH. YOU NEVER SET UP THE CYCLE OF INVESTORS AND INSTEAD YOU GET OUT OF PAYING THEM BACK BY ACTING LIKE YOUR BUSINESS WAS AN ORDINARY FAILURE INSTEAD OF BY STEALING MONEY FROM SUBSEQUENT INVESTORS.
That’s what happened in Atlantic City.
Now think about the rest of his business failures. Trump Airlines? That’s an industry that requires huge startup investment (debt financing) and the owner gets to sell off expensive assets when it fails. Trump Steaks? He sold those at THE SHARPER IMAGE, where it was guaranteed to fail because it was completely the wrong market for that kind of business. Trump University? Never even TRIED to be successful with that, he just tricked people into giving him as much money as he could squeeze out of them, and provided no actual service in exchange. He paid a $25 Million settlement on the lawsuit, but MADE $175 Million off the actual scam, so he walked away with $150 million for doing absolutely nothing. A LOT of his businesses, if you look closely, were practically DESIGNED to fail.
Because that’s how he operates.
Donald Trump is not a good businessman. He never even tried to be a businessman. What he is, is a con artist. Everything he ever made was fake.
The only really successful business he owns is the real estate business … which he inherited from his father and has grown at a slower rate than inflation even as he drives contractors out of business and targets undocumented laborers so they have no legal grounds to sue him for fair wages or working conditions.
Donald Trump is the CEO equivalent of The Producers.

So lately there’s been a lot of scary things happening in media (journalism is dying and there’s huge media layoffs, Amazon, Disney and Netflix are taking over everything, etc). I want everyone to remember how truly amazing and unique AO3 is and the sheer amount of organization and work it takes for it to be independent - many of you on here are young and may not know how much it changed being a fan. Read your history.
