THE VESSEL
tw: cancer, death
Mary Watson grew up with her older sister Mavis in Wildemount, England. From a young age, she loved to dance and she begged her parents for ballet lessons. It was only when Mavis promised to take her to and from her lessons that their parents agreed. Mary was in heaven. Despite the hard work and fierce competition, she loved every minute of it and dreamed of dancing with the Royal Ballet.
Before this dream could become a reality, Mary was diagnosed with bone cancer. At only twenty years, she could see her future slipping away. The stress took its toll on the family, and as she went in and out of treatment, Mary saw her parents' marriage fall apart. It was just her and Mavis, and when her sister told her that she would make a deal with Death itself to save her, Mary begged her not to do it. As scared as she was, she didn't want her sister to suffer further.
Mavis didn't listen and made the deal. She traded her life for Mary’s. Death came and took Mavis, leaving a distraught and grief-stricken, but healthy Mary behind. Mary couldn’t accept this. Mavis was all she had left. She tried to summon Death to convince them to bring her sister back, but instead she summoned a demon.
THE DEMON
Ali Suresh was a thief and conman in India with ambitions of being a wealthy man without worries. He stole and cheated and killed in his desperate climb to the top. Eventually, that life caught up to him. He conned the wrong man who retaliated by sending twelve of his best men after Ali. He ran and hid and managed to allude the men for several weeks.
When he died, it was his own fault. In one of his escape attempts, he misjudged a jump from the top of a building into the sea and landed on the rocks. As he lay dying, he beseeched Death to not let him die, offering her his service if she let him live. She told him she didn't make deals and, for his crimes and selfishness in life, sent him to Hell. There he was tortured for decades, until he began to feel his humanity slip away. He never stopped trying to figure out a way to escape, however, and eventually he found it. A rift and a girl with a summoning spell. He jumped at the chance to live again, even if it was in the body of a young girl. He isn’t looking for control, simply life and a chance to receive what he believes he’s due.
THE PRESENT
Mary lives as she did before, Ali allowing her to use her body as normal. He's nothing but a whisper in the back of her mind, giving her heightened strength and senses. Considering she’s an investment, he does come out to protect her if he feels she's being threatened. Otherwise, he remains hidden, doing his best to not draw attention to himself. The last thing he wants is to be discovered and dragged back to Hell.
On Mary's end, it's strange to have an entire life she doesn't know in her head. She has all of Ali's memories and knowledge, which can be very overwhelming. Other than some migraines, however, she's been adjusting to it well enough.
There is one thing Ali hasn't shared with her, however. After a while, being awake while demon-possessed can turn one insane.
