HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMENโS DAYย #IWD2018
Today women across the globe are celebrating what we have achieved social, culturally and politically!
Did you know at #IWD has been around for a century?! In the early !900s women started to stand up against oppression and inequality. There was a hige stigma around the roles of women: Many believed that their roles were to stay at home look after children and allow men to do all the work and have a say. In 1908 a march took place in New York where women demanded an increase in pay and the right to vote.ย
Over the years women have fought hard for equality in all aspects of life from roles at home to the work place etc. We have come a long way but we still need to push even more! According to the National Office of Statistics, there a hugeย pay gap between men and women -18.4%. โThis โฆ means that women effectively work for free for the first 67 days of the year,โ Frances OโGrady, TUC
I am so happy to have grown up knowing inspiring strong women (including my mother, nan, and aunties!) And of course amazing women in history such as Rosa Parks, Frida Kahlo, Dianne Abbot, Malala Yousafzai. But i am i wanted to mention a fewfictional female heroes from my childhood:ย
Lara Croftย
Those who know me understand i am a HUGE gaming nerd! In my free time or when i get home from work, i turn my playstation and immerse myself into a different dimension. I loved Lara Croft because she is a strong independent ย adventurer discovering ancient artefacts and even when she encountered enemies, she did not back down.ย
Dana Scullyย
I have watched all 214 episodes - 4 more left till the finale :( What i admire about Dr Dana Scully is there she was someone who worked hard to prove or disprove theories no matter what it took. She based her work on hard facts that science has provided but also kept an open mind.ย
Stormย
Ororo Monroe, most commonly known as Storm, ย from the Marvel Universe used her mutant powers of whether control to help local tribes. After finding the X-Men she was encouraged by Professor Xavier and used her talents to help people worldwide with the talents she possessed.ย
San (Princess Mononoke)
Mononoke actually means Spirit, in Japanese the film is called โHime Mononokeโ meaning Princess of a spirit. San is a human girl raised by a Mononoke. Because of this she emotionally attached to the forest protecting it from being invaded to allow machinery to take over the land. I love that she is strong and although she hasn't many on her side, she does not let this defeat her and stays true to her beliefs.ย
Sailor Guardiansย
Growing up watching tv is something we do as children. The Films and shows we watch are remembered for a lifetime. Anime is still something i enjoy to this day! One of my favourite shows is Sailor moon. What i loved about it was that it wasnโt a heroic show where the males were doing good and the women are helpless waiting for to be rescued. The sailor guardians fought against evil and helped to protect humankind. Definition of Girl Power!ย
Be proud to be a women! Its great to celebrate women and fight for equality regardless of what gender you are or identify as. There is one race that matters and that is the human race. So lets do all we can to create peace and equality!ย
Remember girls can do whatever we want! If you want to skateboard AND do ballet whoโs stopping you? Can girls game? Yaaaaaassss! Can we we pick heavy things up and put them back down? with a lot of practice anything is possible. We are strong inside and out <3ย
Happy International Womenโs Day! <3ย
