National Coming Out Day and ICE

Good morning! Happy National Coming Out Day! My name is Tahj, I am queer and nonbinary. I want to hit you with some thoughts. National Coming Out Day is on October 11 because that is the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. On their platform, they had 7 demands. Some of them have been met, and some of them have not. The one I’m going to talk about #7, which was “An end to racism in this country [the United States of America].”

An ICE office just moved into a building at the center of my city, right in the downtown where my friends, and many people, hang out. It is also only minutes walking from one of the three high schools in my city. This is disgusting and infuriating. The way undocumented persons are handled in this country is racist, and this is an LGBTQ+ issue. No one is free from oppression until we are all free from oppression. I hope that today you will befriend your neighbors if you haven’t already, and find the resources to know where ICE is in your state. Solidarity is key.
