Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation
ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS WHO USE E-MAIL BLASTS:
A new legislation has been passed to help reduce harmful spam for Canadians. The law will come into effect on July 1st 2014. This legislation is a great thing for consumers, but what does it mean for those who run a business?
This is a very serious legislation that must be followed and we're here to give you a few tips on what the will mean. The law requires you to include three important things in every e-mail:
1. Consent
Have consent in one way or another to actually send someone an e-mail. This can include: asking someone to sign up when they enter your store or simply allowing people to sign up online and having them agree to the terms and conditions when they do.
Please note: Finding consent is not about scamming people into signing up for e-mails. Sending e-mails out to uninterested customers will only harm your business.
2. Identification
Your e-mails must clearly identify who you are.
3. Options to unsubscribe
Every e-mail you send MUST include an option to unsubscribe to the e-mails.
If you have any questions contact us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MatisonMedia), Twitter (https://twitter.com/MatisonMedia), or right here on Tumblr!
Further details are also available on CRTC's anti-spam site, which has useful information: www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/casl-lcap.htm

LinkedIn Perks For Companies
LinkedIn is a well known website for networking between people, but did you know the uses for a company?
LinkedIn is a great place to find suppliers and vendors for products. The website makes it easy to comb through thousands of users and finds the one that are compatible with your company. Knowing who people have worked with, through LinkedIn, provides your company with the assets needed to eliminate any companies that may have previously conflicted with your views or needs.
Not only can you find people to work with, but LinkedIn can also help you find customers! That's right: the website is a great place to build your online presence and advertise your brand. LinkedIn is about networking and jobs, but that doesn't mean people would ignore a company that has the products they want or need. While searching for a job, someone might just stumble across your company that has the product they've been searching for!
Finally, companies can very easily use LinkedIn for its actual purpose: networking. A strong online presence on LinkedIn will translate well to prospective employees. Qualified applicants will be immediately drawn to your company.
Check out LinkedIn for a great way to build your brand and company!

A Whole New Twitter World
Twitter has re-vamped their site and we're here to help you navigate it!
Not only has twitter added new features, but they've re-designed the website for a cleaner look. A few of the new features include:
Twitter will automatically re-size your Twitter header photo for a better fit.
They're created a smoother way to look at your timeline of tweets and the ability to read more tweets at once.
Proud of a certain tweet or want it promoted? You can now pin your favourite tweets to the top of your page so that they always appear first!
Like the new look? You can automatically change your Twitter to the new design by accessing your timeline and selecting the big blue "turn it on!" button. Good luck tweeting!
Social Media to Get Your Business Started
Social media is important in the business world today. Some even argue the business to customer relations are mostly done through social media. The question is which social media should I pick? Here's a list of a few social media outlets to get people talking about YOUR business.
1. Facebook
An obvious choice and yet some businesses still don't have their own pages. Creating a Facebook page allows easy interaction with your customers.
2. Twitter
Twitter is sometimes disregarded because of the limitations with what you can say (140 characters? Definitely not enough to state your return policy). However, what it gives you is the ability to reconnect with your customers on a more personal level. Is your sentence too long? Well on Twitter it's acceptable to put a "u" where a "you" should be. This isn't something you're able to do with professional e-mails or websites. Plus, it's a chance for you to have fun. Follow and re-tweet from comedians or celebrities. Who knows? One of them might even follow you back!
3. Instagram
Do you have a product? Show it! Encourage customers to take pictures with your product and #hashtag them with your company's name! This is a great way for other people to do the advertising for you: word of mouth.
4. Pinterest
Pinterest is a great platform to create a brand and look for your company. The website allows you to link directly to your website in order to direct sales. The website also allows you to create your own page. You can suggest products that work well with yours or even draw people in with other products!
Just remember, not every platform works for everyone. It's important to use social media that will compliment your company. Not sure which social media is right for you? Send us an ask and we will help you out!

Top Tips for Social Media Users
Social media has been around for a while, but some companies are new to jumping on the band wagon. It can be hard to determine where to start. Here's a little guide to help you with all your social media woes. 1. Choose your platforms wisely.

Facebook? Twitter? Pinterest? There's hundreds to choose from, but that doesn't mean you should use them all. Pick the ones that will compliment your business. 2. Create a personality.
Create a character or persona that will keep people interested. Remember Clippy, Microsoft Word's mascot? Even this animated character seemed to have it's own persona!
3. Keep Active!
