reflection on home
its sad when you think about where you call home is becoming foreign. its becoming out of reach, taken for others, changed. where what you call home is a destiny of paycheck to paycheck, unsafe streets and polluted air.
a place where you imagined and dreamed that your kids would play in its parks. then out of no where you have a new potential home. a home far away. a home that feels different.

Because of her food journalism, the food world has been well aware of Samin Nosrat for several years. But she became a household name when two things happened: First, her book Salt, Fat, Acid Heat: Mastering The Art of Good Cooking became a runaway bestseller. The book explored the mysteries of cooking for the home chef, and garnered just about every award a cookbook could get. In the words of Nosrat’s mentor, Alice Waters (chef-owner of the legendary Berkeley restaurant Chez Panisse,) Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat “not only teaches you how to cook, but captures how it should feel to cook: full of exploration, spontaneity and joy.”
As if that weren’t enough, Nosrat filmed a four-part docuseries with Netflix last fall, and which was also called Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat. In it, she travels to Italy to explore the importance of fat (olive oil! Parmesan!); to Japan to see salt harvested and soy and miso fermented; then to Yucatán, Mexico to see how acid, in the form of sour oranges, enhances dishes; and finally back to California to show us how heat transforms meats and vegetables.
After the Netflix series, Nosrat became so well known it became hard to walk down the street or into her favorite grocery store without being stopped by fans and yes, people with questions. (So many questions!) And sometimes just thanks. She recalled the Iranian father in Oakland who thanked her for speaking to his daughters, who were Iranian and African American. “Thank you for showing them what is possible,” he told her.
Nosrat is that rare thing: a woman of color in the upper echelons of the snarky, hyper-competitive food world. Her columns appear regularly in The New York Times, she travels the country lecturing about food and culture and doing cooking demonstrations. She is acutely aware of her unicorn status, and spends a lot of time thinking about how to push wider the door she’s managed to open so she won’t be the Only One in the public eye.

Banksy in Venice
During the Venice Biennale, one of the most notable international shows on the planet. Many artists who are not in the invitation-only exhibition come to Venice to share their work in unaffiliated gallery shows and take advantage of the Biennale-boosted foot traffic. One such artist chose a more unorthodox setup for his Venice sideshow. Banksy joined the hordes of street vendors selling paintings to pedestrian tourists with a salon-style setup that merged several paintings together. Titled “Venice in Oil,” the multi-panel work depicts a gas-guzzling cruise ship towering over the ancient city as gondoliers in traditional dress row by.

I met Josh a few years back while visiting NYC. He worked previously with a good friend on a video and that’s how we linked up. We met up at a dope Japanese coffee shop in the east village. This year I got to spend time with my Tia Martha (@26martha) and she showed me how our family makes tamales. The Mayans and Aztec civilization used tamales as portable food for hunters, travellers, and warriors. In the @medium article Tamales: A Brief History there was an interesting American historical note about President Gerald Ford. “It may be obvious to you or I that one must remove the husk of a tamale before eating, it definitely wasn’t obvious to America’s 38th President Gerald Ford. On the now infamous day of April 10, 1976 Ford was campaigning for re-election and found himself hungry and touring the Alamo in San Antonio Texas. Lucky for him there was a plate of tamales at the event. Ford made the fateful decision to eat the tamale husk and all, choking a little as he swallowed. The incident was caught by the media and went viral so-to-speak, thus creating the Great Tamale Incident of 1976. Ford ended up losing his bid for president to Jimmy Carter. Some say the election was lost because of a tamale.
