Maul’s is a hard man to find.
They say the Zabrak stays in Dathomir when he’s not travelling, but his second—faceless and nameless, clad in patchwork beskar armour and bounty hunter leathers—is a ghost. Cody has been following him for weeks, patiently tracking him in his trips through the galaxy, plotting and waiting and watching.
The man travels without guards. He flies a modified shuttle, an old Republic model retrofitted with better engines, heavily armed and armoured. He’s a decent pilot.
Cody is half-sure he is a clone. He has never seen the man without his helmet, but he recognises that way of moving; the shape of his shoulders is familiar.

The ship enters realspace with a shudder and a rattle. Rex blinks his eyes open and stares at the dark, confused. At his back, his cold metal legs covered by soft pajama pants, Maul grumbles. Rex distractedly pats the hand on his belly and attempts to leave the bed, but Maul doesn’t budge. He hides his face in the crook of Rex’s neck and exhales, his breath warm and damp against his skin. Rex shivers, and he feels Maul smile, smug; the hand slides lower, sharp claws brushing just under the waistband of his sleeping shorts, and Rex chews his lips, tries and fails not to push his hips forward and upwards, towards that warm, dry hand and those bony fingers.

Summary: Maul has killed many Inquisitors: he won’t kill the captain.
The temple is a splinter of darkness. It rises from the golden sand, tall and thin and black, breaking the blue sky in two. Its shadow travels with the sun, sweeping over the dunes, a lone long nail scratching at the desert.
Maul heard the TIE coming. He stepped outside, the heat and the light cruel and disinterested all at once, and watched it land.
The whole planet is dead. The air is thin and rarified; it smells of nothing, just of dust. The absence pushes down on Maul, creeps down his back, makes his brain rattle in his skull. He can sense the captain as if he were by his side, half-drowned as he is by the temple’s immense and terrible presence.
He has not changed. The same cold focus and the same sharp mind that Maul still remembers from their first meeting in Mandalore.
