What we learned about Hux in The Last Jedi
The loss of Starkiller Base took a lot out of him.
Of course it did. Remember, that it just happened. We have had two years to digest the ending of TFA. Hux has had days, or weeks at the most, depending on the exact timing of TLJ after TFA. Starkiller Base had been the physical culmination of all of his lifeâs goals manifesting. It would have honestly been bad characterization if that wouldnât have fucked him up. I think Hux copes pretty well given that his entire arc in TLJ is everything that could possibly go wrong, going very, very wrong for him. Alternative title: Star Wars: Hot Mess Hux.
Domhnall said before that Hux is âobsessive and probably doesnât sleep much.â Well, watching TLJ, I doubt Hux has even slept at all at this point.Â
His authority figure complex runs unimaginably deep.
We knew from Huxâs interactions with his father in the Phasma novel, that he has deep-rooted issues with authority figures in his life, especially male authority figures, since his relationship with Rae Sloane was much less tumultuous.
We see that after Snoke physically hurt Hux a few scenes earlier, Hux is still glowing from receiving praise from him. We know from Aftermath (and supported by his continued hatred of his father in the Phasma novel) that his father Brendol was abusive towards him. So Hux seeking praise from a man who hurt him, suggests a very tragic precedent was set in Huxâs mind as a child and stayed with him as an adult.Â
The Last Jedi explores how Ben Solo became Kylo Ren, but I think we can also glean how young Armitage turned into the ruthless General Hux, and it is truly sad. I have written before about Hux as a tragic figure, and what we have seen in the Last Jedi only reinforces that even more.Â
Hux sees the way of things as kill or be killed.
When Hux sees Kylo unconscious after Snokeâs death he sees a brief chance to fill the vacuum of power, and his first instinct is to reach for his blaster. Throughout Huxâs entire life this was how things were done. His father would encourage his academy protegees to kill off the weaker students. Hux considers killing Kylo, not only because he wants power (I am sure he does), but he probably thinks if he doesnât, then Kylo might be the one to kill him.Â
He is dedicated to maintaining Order
Snoke died and Kylo Ren took his title. Hux is shocked about it for a second, and then he seems to just get on with his duties. Hux is the movie villain incarnation of âKeep Calm and Carry on,â which makes sense since Domhnall plays Hux a la old Hollywood British antagonist. Snoke beats the shit out of him, and Hux is shaken up, but he keeps that stiff upper lip. Perhaps his dedication to âorderâ is the only motivation that keeps him going?
He is sensitive about being illegitimate
We know that his mother being a âkitchen womanâ was known among the First Order at least during the Aftermath series. It is not clear whether the Resistance has any inkling of Huxâs parentage. In my opinion, Poe made that âyour momâ joke just as a default insult. However, we see from the way Hux snaps that it cut deeper than them that.Â
Kylo Ren and General Hux are in an uncomfortable truce
The end of Last Jedi shows them working together to some degree, Hux being more willing to cooperate with Kylo than the other way around, but the back and forth struggle for power is very much present. Who knows if it will fade or intensify after the death of Snoke, the man who set his two protegees against each other in the first place. I canât say for sure yet. However, both men are mentally shattered by the end of Last Jedi, and it is likely that they will begrudgingly work as co-leaders until one or the other, or both, plans to oust the other OR they realize things would run more smoothly if they worked together. The latter is not completely unlikely. They may not like each other, but they are clever characters who may be able to think the situation through more logically now that Snoke wonât be whispering in their minds anymore. Fascinating potential here.Â
Domhnall Gleeson is amazing!!! (As always!)Â
And I just have to say, Domhnall, thank you so much for putting it all into a another great performance! Domhnallâs trademark of relishing acting roles that make him the butt of the joke/ portray him as an absolute mess (Crash Pad, Peter Rabbit, his Immaturity for Charity skits, etc.), was reflected in the no-holds-bound way Domhnall gave us the unhinged, mentally-falling-to pieces Hux we only got brief glimpses of previously in TFA. Domhnall is not afraid of taking the piss out of himself, and his acting is all the better for it. Kudos Domhnall!
I canât wait for TLJ to come out on DVD so I can do a more detailed scene analysis!! We got so much more Hux this time around! I am thrilled, guys!!Â
